everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Jo/Vinnie - 7:15 - Outside in the Lobby
[info]tohelandback

Jo shifted nervously from foot to foot while she waited at the junction of the lobby with the hallway leading to the first floor apartments. She held her red and white mask in her hands, having decided that it was too uncomfortable to wear until she absolutely had to.

She could have gone ahead to the party, of course, but she wanted to wait and go in with Vinnie. She had to admit, she was nervous...she hadn't exactly found a good opportunity to break the news to Nishka yet.

She shifted again and peered down the hallway towards her boy- towards Vinnie's apartment, and wondered if she should go and check to see if he was ready.

Almost right on cue, Vinnie's door cracked open--and then quickly shut to the sound of a hissed curse and a thud. About a minute afterward the door opened again and the man in question rushed out, keys jangling in one hand and the mask he'd been cursing since it arrived in his other.

He at least managed to lock the door without further drama, stuffing the keys into the pocket of his jacket as he rushed down the hallway. The sound of his much-worn boots echoed off the floor, and the reason behind keys going into the suit became more apparent as he ran into the light; the boy is wearing a kilt.

"I am so sorry," he gasped out, skidding to a stop. "I forgot I had like, half this outfit and I'm pretty sure the boots aren't mine but they fit and did I say I'm sorry?"

Nish/James - 7:30, near the punch
[info]nishka

Nish arrived at the party a little late, feeling very out of place among all the other costumes people were wearing. She hadn’t had time to find a proper ‘halloween costume’ to go with her mask (which Stephan insisted she put on before she was allowed in), but instead had fallen back on a dress she’d worn years ago to a party she could barely remember. There had been lots of alcohol and drugs involved, but the dress still fit nicely, so she settled for that. Let other people decide for themselves what she was ‘dressed as’.

She didn’t see James yet, so she found her way to the food table with the hilariously themed options, choosing a ‘foot’ for herself and a glass of red punch. After downing two cups of the stuff she realized just why she liked the candy flavoured drink so much and carefully stepped away from the table, holding onto the edge of it for a moment and looking around with a hint of guilt.

She finally spotted James approaching her and managed a smile for him, but it faded soon after when he got closer. “The red one is spiked,” she said quietly, gesturing to her empty glass on the table, uncomfortably, enjoying its effects far far too much.

Not what he expected when it came to Halloween parties, but alright, James would go with it. He couldn't shake the ominous feeling in the pit of his stomach, however, it felt like a block of ice - so let's just say that spiked punch was the least of his concerns. Perhaps he was being overly paranoid though? After all, there was no reason to doubt the ooky-spooky decorations, the cross-dressing bouncer, or the finger foods that were very appropriate to the season.

He had on his mask as required (lest he risk getting booted from this happening affair, gods no), and with it he paired sort of a period costume, a long brown coat that was actually quite intricate, black gloves, trousers and waistcoat that were in a darker brown. No sword, sadly, but he thought the white cuffs made him look Mr. Darcy-esque so it worked.

"Well, then I'll stick with the neon green one," he decided, smiling crookedly - he wasn't going to make a big deal of Nishka drinking the obviously alcoholic punch. He was here to have fun, he wanted to have fun and stay away from anything dramatic for at least ten minutes. "Interesting turnout, no?"

Max/OPEN - 7pm - Loitering in the Lobby

Max had put her mask on before even coming downstairs, matching nicely with her fuzzy cat ears, cat tail and glittery gold dress and black fishnet tights. She wandered around the lobby, enjoying the feel of her new costume as she inspected the decorations on the way to the rec room.

Mercy partly dragged Nate off of the elevator, excitement for her favorite holiday (not to mention her birthday) vibrating through her body. She had her Calavera mask on, despite her earlier gripes; to match, a lace dress that stopped well above her knees and showed far too much skin everywhere else clad her form. She tiptoed forward on spindly heels to complete the look, her hair done up in massive curls.

She spotted a woman dressed in gold and started forward, wondering if there was something going on in the lobby as a precursor to the main party.

"Hey! Catwoman!" Mercy waved, still attached to Nate; he was her date, and as far as she was concerned, unless something better came along, he wasn't going anywhere. "Is there something out here we should be looking for?"

Isobel/Obed - 7:10 p.m., lobby to party room
[info]praxidike
2017-11-08 03:12 pm UTC (link)
Isobel held her neck straight, feeling overwhelmingly ridiculous but also a little bit grand as she and Obed made their way out of the elevator and toward the party room. She'd ushered him in front of her so the giant skirts of her French noblewoman costume would have room to exit the elevator car and not block him in, but her hand kept groping for his for an anchor.

"I think you're going to have to be my seeing-eye dog, because the eye holes in this thing aren't very good," she said, her voice muffled by the mask over her face. Glancing toward the room, Isobel caught Stephan's eye, and she waved, her hand wavering down from her wig for a moment. She smiled, but the expression was barred by the required garb of the evening.

She turned back to Obed, her smile only going wider at the sight of his matching nobleman's costume; her hand pulled him closer, as close as the large hoop skirts would allow. "I know these are just rentals, but I am so inclined to buy these outright because you look so good in that. What will it take to convince you to just stay home and wear it all the time so I can take it off you?"

"When you put it that way," Obed answered, "not much. But are you sure? I feel..." His voice trailed off, but his posture made clear how he felt. He maintained some modicum of pride in his walk, but to Isobel his insecurity was surely plain. As they swept into the room he brushed a hand over the elaborately embroidered cloth of his costume. It had cost a pretty penny, and he was earnestly glad of that, happy to see Isobel becoming somewhat more comfortable with their means.

"It looks like the mandatory mask policy went over pretty well." He cast an eye about the room, smiling softly as he took in the revelers in all their costumed glory. After a solid month of bizarre occurrences, it was pleasant to see everyone relaxing a bit, simply enjoying the season for what it could be. He chuckled, putting on a feigned frown, and pointed to where Gabe strolled about in a well-fitted suit. "Although I didn't realize I could've just done that," he teased.

Gabe/Rafe - 7:05 p.m., snack table
[info]xochipilli
2017-11-08 03:18 pm UTC (link)
Gabe found himself incredibly hardpressed to do much more than work at keeping his hands off of Rafe. Between the gold mask that fit his features perfectly to the gold toga wrapped somewhat sparsely around his form (he'd at the very least kept it PG for the evening, something Gabe both appreciated and rued), there was a lot of skin showing. Beside that, he felt worried about Rafe's mental state following the work party they'd both attended only a few days before.

The tarot card reading Rafe had received was all doom and gloom, but maybe tonight things would be just a little alleviated. They walked through the lobby toward the food table, nodding at Stephan who checked their names off of the list. It seemed like a bit much for such a small congregation inside a huge building, but maybe particulars were simply being observed.

"Some punch?" His hand gripped Rafe's tightly, his other adjusting the butterfly mask over his own eyes. It felt a little itchy, but at least the rest of him was dressed comfortably in a plain black suit. It wasn't the most festive outfit, but he'd done his dressing up at the other party. "And we can see what food they've got..."

"I'd like that," Rafael said, smiling bright enough to match his golden attire. After another small squeeze of Gabriel's fingers, Rafe drew away, drifting toward the bowls that held their drinks. He poured a small cup from each; he frowned after a quick taste test revealed neither contained any alcohol.

"I didn't think to bring liquor," he mused, returning to Gabriel's side. "I guess that will have to wait for our afterparty."

He pulled Gabe closer toward the food, more to keep his hands on him than out of any real desire to eat. He chewed his lip as he stared down at the offerings there, finding everything a touch too macabre for his liking. His smile began to fade. "Didn't anyone tell them you eat with your eyes first?" he complained. "I understand they're trying to be creepy, but..."

Lucas arrived very late to the party, having just gotten off work an hour ago. He'd been planning on working the entire night to cover for one of his coworkers in the ER, but when she arrived a few hours into her shift, in partial costume and pissed off about being stood up, he decided to grace the party with his appearance after all.

Having not prepared to go at all, he had no obvious costume, though he did wear the gold sun mask he'd been given at the beginning of the month. That with a black suit, and shiny gold tie seemed to be all he could do to make himself presentable for the party.

The Rec room was already full of mingling people when he arrived. He smiled to a few people he knew and headed over to where Stephan was overseeing the proceedings near the front door of the room.

"A little over the top, do you think?" he asked with a chuckle. "But I guess it's a pretty good party." Stephan smiled at him.

"You have no idea," he said with a grin, which Lucas found kind of odd, but also kind of in character with his costume.

Lucas/Isobel/Obed - 7:30 p.m., hanging around
[info]praxidike
2017-11-09 08:20 pm UTC (link)
"Lucas!" Isobel raised the cup full of green punch in the man's direction, leading Obed by the hand behind her. Her ridiculously large skirts had the extra added effect of easily clearing a path, which she was abusing to large effect. Soon enough, she'd closed the distance between the man and them, leaving them in the middle of the room, surrounded by the few other patrons who had by now made it down to the rec room.

"I thought you'd be here with Alice! Please tell me she's not working right now," Isobel started, canting her head slightly with a teasing smile playing over her lips. "Oh, sorry, let me..." She stepped a little to the side, giving Obed space to move around her and join the small circle. "This is Obed, my fiancé. Obed, this is Lucas, Alice's boyfriend." She ended the statement on a slightly higher lilt with raised, questioning brows, suddenly unsure if she was naming the pair's relationship correctly. The fact that he was stag could be saying something she hadn't had time to pick up.

Kate/OPEN - 8pm - pool area
[info]khthonie
2017-11-09 03:41 am UTC (link)
The party seemed almost too cartoonish, too casual for Kate's current mood. When the building had changed again, Kate had kept her head down and just been glad it hadn't closed them in completely. But as the days wore on, something changed. The candles in the hallways almost became a comfort, and she imagined the flames grew as she passed. She began to hold her head up high again. She felt...confident. Powerful. More so than she ever had before. And she didn't bother to question it.

Which is why she now wore an exorbitantly expensive dress she had ordered especially to go with her mask, which didn't cover up her vision or her breathing like she had feared it might. The sense of empowerment increased when she had put both on, though the feeling had dimmed at the sight of kindergarten decorations and sound of cheesy Halloween songs as she glided confidently into the Pax rec room.

Instead of making her way to the refreshment table, her usual first stop, she stepped outside by the pool and leaned against the fence, looking up through her mask and losing herself in the stars shining in the distance.

James needed some air.

Also cartoonish was one fucking accurate way to describe this party, and he found that once he'd sampled the radioactive glowing punch (one spiked, one not - at least not since he last checked, someone could have dumped tequila in for all he knew) and the spoooooky finger foods, he was left with little to do. And with Nishka arguing with him about how he worked too much and didn't see her enough (he just got this bloody job, forgive him for wanting to keep it and make a good impression), well, that sort of cemented his need for space and all things outdoors.

He came across someone else, stargazing it seemed, and god's holy trousers - that dress. It was stunning, she was stunning. "I'm not much of an astronomer, but it's nice to be able to see them," he spoke about the stars, coming up beside his neighbour in his period ensemble he was calling a costume - the mask was mostly gold, touched with a light blue. He didn't think they'd met, but now was a good time to make new friends. "Without much city smog interfering for once."

Gabe/Nish/Rafe - 8:02 p.m., back by the punch bowl
[info]xochipilli
2017-11-10 12:54 am UTC (link)
Together, toga and suit made a round of the small recreational room, hand in arm, seeking out any others they knew. He gave Obed and his lady a cursory wave, hoping to speak further with his friend later on in the evening. He didn't see the redhead who'd grilled him over Rafe's wellbeing, and soon enough he and Rafe found themselves back near the punch bowl to refill their drinks—standing next to which was none other than Nishka, looking unhappy over some development.

Gently loosing Rafe from his elbow, Gabe stepped forward to ladle some of the red punch into his drink, completely unaware that it was now spiked. He cast a look of concern in Nish's direction, before glancing back at Rafe.

"Everything OK?" He asked, the question directed toward the former party. Gabe stepped back from the punch bowl, and brought his drink to his lips to better wet his throat for the assumedly ensuing conversation, his face immediately puckering in surprise. "Oh, wow, that's... that's new." He coughed a little, motioning to Rafe. "Someone spiked it, looks like. Surprised it didn't happen earlier, frankly..."

Nish spared Gabe a glance before downing the cup of red punch in her hand, despite his 'warning about it's contents. She'd already had several by this point, and was a lot more drunk than when James had left her, and that thought only made her feel worse. "Yeah, fine. Perfect. I'm perfect," she said harshly, reaching to ladle herself another glass. The first two cups had been an accident, but they'd just opened the floodgates.

Chris/Daniel/June/Kal - 8:30 p.m., by the pool table
[info]coyoti
2017-11-12 11:38 pm UTC (link)
They were late; fashionably late, as some might call it, but if Chris had had his way, he wouldn't have come to this party at all. In the end, it had taken equal parts guilt tripping and puppy eyes from Kal, June, and Daniel (the latter being responsible for the eyes) to make him now show up in his store-bought 'Native American' outfit, the coyote mask over his eyes.

"I don't know who spiked the punch, but I need to personally thank them," Chris muttered, draining his second cup and feeling wobbly even on his brace. The mask made him feel uncomfortable, but at least the presence of his friends gave him some modicum of security. Even still, he felt like he was waiting for the other shoe to drop; there had to be something going on here, something greater than what seemed the sum of its parts.

But he was doing his best to play it cool, to not have anyone believe he was anything more than his usual miserly self when it came to having a good time. He wished, not for the first time that evening, that he was more comfortable with being handsy in public due to Daniel's choice in costume, but he vented his frustrations by hitting a striped blue ball into the corner pocket.

"We need to be betting on this game. I'm kicking all of your asses right now, how I'm not taking your money too is a crime."

"I'll bet," Daniel said, "but not money."

He propped his hip against the side of the pool table; the thin red fabric of his tunic rode all the higher up his thighs. He brushed a fallen droplet of liquor-infused punch from his faux leather breastplate, bringing it to his lips with a salacious little gesture. It might have seemed as if he had forgotten himself, had forgotten they were in public and where all their neighbors could see. But in spite of his growing intoxication Daniel was exhibiting what he felt was a monumental level of self control. He had not, for example, touched the leather fringe at Chris's chest even once; had not brushed past him too closely since they had left the safety of Chris's apartment. So if he was feeling bold now, he felt he deserved it, a fair exchange for his good behavior so far.

"One of us has to beat him," he said. "Y'all know that, right? Or we're never gonna hear the end of it."

Alice/Isobel/Rafe - 8:15 - the entrance
[info]rosemary_thyme
2017-11-14 12:18 am UTC (link)
Alice was late solely because of her nerves. She was at first worried she would see Brittany, then overcome with worry over where Brittany had gone. The message board had indicated her vanishment and she had followed the posts and the various people saying she hadn't been seen; she even went and knocked on her door without any response. Alice didn't text her though, she couldn't bring herself to do that yet because of her nerves and own hurt feelings. Then there was the concern of the party overall and all her fright of turning into a pile of rice and never coming back again. After many discussions with Molly who only replied with an occassional meow, Alice gathered her wits, got dressed, and went downstairs.

"Your mask, Miss Kennedy," was the only words offered to her as Alice arrived, jolting her from zoning in on the entryway of the room and forcing her into the present.

"Oh, sorry," Alice replied as she reached to her head and pulled her mask down over her eyes. She stepped into the room and found her hands pressed to her waist where the bead work of her flapper dress, the same color as her mask, looked like delicately placed grains of rice. Looking into the room at her very casual neighbors, she felt that it was normal but immediately began to doubt the situation and took a step back, already tempted to leave.

Isobel spotted the near bolting doe in the midst of her conversation with Obed and another party-goer; pressing a hand to Obed's forearm, she said a few words indicating she'd be right back, and then started to thread her way through the minimal crowd toward Alice's side. Her voluminous skirts made clearing a pathway easy.

"You made it! I was starting to think you wouldn't show." Isobel hooked her arm through Alice's; her own mask was set off-kilter, allowing her face to show. "Do you want to get some food? Or maybe some punch? Someone spiked it already, but I guess that shouldn't be too much of a surprise..." Even with a cup in her other hand, she patted Alice's arm as well as she could.

"I promise nothing weird has happened," Isobel offered in a lower tone, trying to be reassuring. She did not add the modifier yet.

Matt/Alex - 8:30 - entry to punch bowl
[info]chernobog
2017-11-14 12:44 am UTC (link)
Matthew offered Alex his arm and couldn't help but smile at her. Donned in a black suit he had stashed in the back of his closet for weddings and his black mask over his face, his blue eyes seemed to glow all the more brighter and the happiness he felt kept his worries at bay.

The apartment was strange, perhaps possessed, but Alex was a part of it. As much as he didn't want her to be involved, she was, and he found himself endlessly relieved that he had someone to confide in. "Well, here we are," he murmured as he looked into the room. It was their first date of sorts and he worried it didn't really count as a date considering it was just to the first floor of their apartment, but he hoped it would still be something Alex would enjoy. Looking down at her, he grinned, "Would you like a drink?"

"An apartment complex like this should have more than two kinds of punch on tap," Alex grumbled slightly, putting one delicate, pale arm through the crook of Matt's elbow. Her slight whine implied she wanted something other than the juvenile drink, especially for an 18+ gathering such as this. She was dressed to match her date, though it hadn't been planned; she'd gone off the mask she'd been gifted, which was faux diamonds set on a sea of velvety black.

That had somewhat constrained her options, but Alex wasn't much of a costume person in the end. A glittering black dress set with similar transparent stones that winked in what little light was available matched her mask well enough, and made both her and Matt a matched pair.

Contrary to Matt's anxiety, Alex felt perfectly at ease as she swept the room with a hawklike gaze. Only a few others seemed to have made an attempt at costumes at all, between two garishly dressed French nobles, what looked like an extra from the 300 set, and someone in a very sad looking Indian outfit. Or was it Native American? She couldn't remember, nor did she care.

"Yes, let's start there," Alex finally replied, tugging Matt's much larger form into the room.

Nish/Jo - 9:05 - off to the side
[info]nishka
2017-11-14 09:40 pm UTC (link)
Nish had been watching Jo with some guy for the last ten minutes or so, trying to puzzle out exactly who he was, and where she'd seen him before (he was so familiar) and why she didn't know about him, and also what the hell was going on that she didn't know any of this. She was sitting at a table, catching her breath after dancing for a little while with Rafe and Gabe, brooding on her little spat with James, but now she had something else to focus on.

The song ended and Mr. Who Are You left Jo to get a drink or something, and that's when Nish got up to finally say something.

She headed towards her, a little less horribly drunk now that she'd been forced to eat something, but still drunk. She came up behind her and grabbed her arm, dragging her a little away from the dance floor. "Are we still friends?" she demanded, her expression more confused than upset, and clearly very drunk. Their last meeting had been...less than ideal. And right now everything was a little confusing to her, especially relationships.

Lucas/Alice - about 9pm - near the doors
[info]lucas_apollo
2017-11-17 07:07 pm UTC (link)
Lucas had been just about to leave the party (after sampling the food and the heavily spiked punch) to turn in for an early night, when he finally spotted Alice. She was beautiful, and he couldn't take her eyes off her for long, except to try and not look like a creepy stalker who was standing around staring at her while she talked with her friends.

She looked a little nervous, or upset, and that concerned him. He shifted so that he was still in view, but not obviously staring across the room at her. The last thing he wanted was to make her more uncomfortable.

So he stood to the side of the doors with a clear view between them, alternating between watching her and her friends and watching the room at large. He frowned over at an obviously inebriated Nishka sitting with one of her friends, wanting to go over and help, but also to watch for Alice.

Chris/Matt - 9 pm, refilling on drinks
[info]coyoti
2017-11-21 07:14 pm UTC (link)
Chris was half limping as he headed back toward the snack table; though he had but one cup in his hand, the carousing he'd just momentarily snuck away from would not welcome him back gladly if he returned empty handed. Still, he gave himself a few moments to breathe as he ladled more of the red stuff into his cup, leaning against the snack table (it bent a little under his weight, not suited for such a task).

Nearby was a semi-familiar man, at least in that Chris had seen him around the apartment. He couldn't have given him a name—he knew he should have been able, though the usual crushing guilt regarding his role in all of this was nowhere to be found, helpfully chased off by the aggressive spirit of alcohol—and he decided that now was an apt time to fix that.

"You," he started, slurring a little. "Where do I...do I know you?" He squinted, as though doing so would suddenly make the question of the other man's face clear.
