lavender is sure that living is worse ([info]lavishly) wrote in [info]pandorarpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 13 2003, character: hermione granger, character: lavender brown

Characters: Lavender Brown & Hermione Granger
Setting: Starting at the Rising loaf, around 1pm
Rating: safe for work
Summary: Hermione runs into Lavender, it may or may not be awkward, they will eventually start discussing George's ides about a patronus message system.

Everything felt weird. And by weird she meant amazingly unsafe. Lavender felt like each step was one taken on frozen lake that might not be frozen through. It also didn't help that yesterday she had chosen to leave London rather than stay and defend. Instead, Lavender Brown ran home to Eastbourne to curl up in her childhood bed that her mum still maintained just in case Lavender ever wanted to come home. She didn't want to go home, not exactly, she just didn't have anywhere else to go.

At least the upside of going home was that when she came into work this morning she could bring a friend with her. Baby Girl might have not been allowed to poke around the kitchen, but she was welcome in the front of house. It was nice, it meant that once she was through for the day in the back she had someone to hang around with. Baby Girl didn't make it any safer, but it was a lot less lonely.

After finishing up in the kitchen for the afternoon, Lavender grabbed her bag and jacket before going out through the front to collect her dog. At the moment, Baby Girl was getting some attention from a family with a young child and rather than interrupt Lavender took and open spot on small sofa near by and waited for Baby Girl to spot her. The only downside to that was it gave her a few moments to consider how heavy everything really was right now - it was almost enough to make her sick.

Hermione had been given instructions to stay home and rest after her run in with the living inferi. Her arm was basically healed, but still sore from the wound of the previous day, which she had learned had only been made worse by the inexperienced person who tried to heal her. She didn't blame them though, they were just trying to help. But Hermione didn't want to stay home, there was too much to do, and her old department wouldn't let her come in and wear herself out, and her new department wouldn't let her begin training until she was fully healed. So instead of laying about being useless, she decided to go against the Healer's suggestion and venture out. And if Ron gave her an earful for it later, she'd just have to remind him that she never broke the rules before she met him, so really, it was his fault.

Not completely sure where to go, Hermione wandered a bit absently until she reached Diagon, then wandered more in there. She stopped finally at the Rising Loaf for a snack, and thought maybe she would get something for Ron, who was probably having the most stressful week ever. She stepped inside only to find a very friendly dog greeting her, who she gave a small pat and a laugh to before moving further in. That was when she caught eye of Lavender, and though part of her felt awkward enough to pretend she hadn't seen her, the other part of her felt bad for even thinking it. Michael had made it sound like Lavender was having a rough time, and even if they weren't friends per se, she still felt like she should be polite and say hello if nothing else. She slowly walked over to where she was sitting and out a slight smile on her face. "Hu Lavemder," she said quietly, not wanting to startle her if she hadn't seen Hermione yet. "How are you?"

Lavender looked over at Hermione, her face tugging into a very casual smile. "Hello," she said. That was the easier thing to say because the question that followed the greeting was one of those subtly loaded on and the answer always dependent on who was asking and what sort of intention they had. And Lavender wasn't sure that Hermione really wanted to know.

Luckily, that was the point where the chocolate lab finally made her way over, nudging at Lavender's hand. She made a small face at the dog before giving her a good scratch behind the ears as she settled into a sitting position next to her. It was strange to think for a point in her life, the point directly after Fenrir came into it, that she was scared of dogs even her own who wouldn't hurt anyone.

"I'm not bad," she said doing a decent job of making sound just a little bit believable, when she was anything but. "Did you come in to pick something up? We have a lovely almond bread today and the apple spice cake is quite good too."

Hermione nodded at her answer, not sure she completely believed it. She though Lavender looked a bit distracted, and Hermione knew she wasn't Lavender's favorite person in the world. She felt a bit intrusive suddenly, but responded to what she said about the specials. "Actually, yes, I've been couped up all day, thought I'd get out for a bit and get something to eat. The apple spice cake sounds delicious, I'll have to get some of that." Hermione wrung her hands behind her back a little for a moment before she looked back at the dog next to Lavender.

"Is this your dog? Beautiful," she said, with a smile. "I've never had a dog before, but I've always thought they were wonderful companions." Small talk, great. That would make things less awkward.

It was difficult to say was counted as intruding these days. Mostly she was just glad to not have people eager to yell at her, or tell her she was crazy, or wrong when it felt like she was the only one trying. In large part, Hermione had never been that sort of person to her. Any sort of dislike she had felt toward Hermione was because the girl, a young woman now, always had what she wanted, or what she thought she wanted.

"This is Baby Girl, she's one of my dogs although she mostly lives with my parents these days." She skipped over the part where she had sort of moved back home, except moving implied that there was some sort of choice being made there. The fact was that she didn't really have any other place to go. "But I thought I could use some extra company today while I was up in London today, and you know it's always nice to not be out by myself with everything that's been happening."

Hermione smiled honestly at her answer. "She's addorable," she said, giving the dog a little pat on the head. "I guess the dogs being at home gives you a wonderful excuse to see everyone else there as well, right?" she asked. Considering how little she saw her own parents, she was sure it must be nice to be closer to them, although even with that being said, she was making sure her parents stayed safely in Australia, as much as she missed them.

"I bet she makes for excellent company. Do you just have the one? Or do you have more?"

"My family is never far away dogs or not." That was a for better and worse sort of situation. It was good to have her family, to have that sort of support system because most days she needed it. Annoying as they might be at times, Lavender didn't think she would even be surviving without them forcing their ways into her life.

"We have another dog," she said. They were older, but well loved and looked after dogs and she really couldn't imagine not having them. "He's a Jack Russell, named Bailey." She didn't normally make the connection that was also Ron's patronus and the dog came into her life at about the same time he did, but with Hermione standing there she couldn't help but make that leap.

Which then got her thinking about what George said about being able to send messages by patronus. "Do you think you'd want to come for a walk with us?" She said because she didn't really want to be talking about DA stuff here. "Baby Girl seems to like you and always like the extra company."

Hermione nodded. "I wish my family could be closer, but they're happy with how things are now, so I wouldn't ask them to change that on my account. But it is nice when they're here, I enjoy being able to see them whenever I want."

Hermione didn't make the connection, but she liked Jack Russells and nodded at that. Then when she was asked to take a walk with Lavender and Baby Girl, she was a little taken aback. "Oh, sure, that would be nice. Let me just get some of that apple spice cake and then I'll be ready to go." She didn't really have the slightest clue why Lavender would want to spend time with her, but she was curious enough to go along with it and see what it lead to.

Lavender smiled at Hermione, focusing on being normal or at least doing the things that she was supposed to be doing. Having the dog as a sort of buffer helped. Baby Girl calmed her, settled her a little and that was good because she didn't exactly feel the most balanced.

"Sounds great." The line wasn't long now, so it wouldn't be much of a wait. The issue now was just figuring out how to approach the topic. Lavender didn't really like the idea of having to ask Hermione for help, but she couldn't deny that the other woman could be a good resource. "We'll just wait right outside and we'll see you in a few minutes?"

Hermione nodded and headed towards the line as Lavender and Baby Girl went outside. After a few minutes she had a bag in hand with some sweets, some of which she planned on delivering to Ron later, and headed outside to meet them.

It was nice out, and as they started their walk, Hermione wasn't really sure what to say, though she was fairly certain that there must be something in particular Lavender wanted to talk to her about, because why else would she ask her to spend time with her? But she felt awkward just asking her outright what was up, because she didn't want to appear rude if Lavender was just looking for company. "So," Hermione started, glancing over at the blond. "I hope things haven't been too bad for you, considering everything that is going on recently."

She didn't really have a destination in mind, maybe someplace muggle, away from whatever trouble that wizarding world might offer. Not that muggles were that much safer, but sometimes it felt that way.

Lavender didn't answer the question. The truth wasn't something she wanted to say and the lie wasn't worth the effort. Things were horrible for her, she didn't need to bring it up to Hermione, she knew it and she wasn't about to forget it.

"I wanted to ask if you knew what George was talking about for the messaging system." She was Hermione Granger she knew everything. Or at least that was very much how Lavender had always seen her.

Hermione didn't mind her question being ignored at all and was relieved to figure out what this was about. Patronuses, that was what George had mentioned in the message. It made sense to her, it would be a terribly useful thing to know no matter what.

"Yes, about the Patronuses. The Order used them during the war to warn allies of trouble and such. I once saw Minister Shacklebolt's at Bill Weasley's wedding, warning us that Death Eaters were on their way towards us. It's quite interesting, I think it could be something very useful for the DA."

"Do you think we could do it? Like would it actually work?" She imagined that Hermione probably even knew how to do it, just didn't share it with the group because it was too difficult of a spell. It certainly sounded that way, because really who could keep up with Hermione Granger?

But she was trying, wasn't she? And they had all grown since Hogwarts, so Lavender really didn't need to going off on the girl in her head. She had lost Harry and he was actually something important to her - far more important than the symbol that he was to Lavender.

"I mean casting a patronus itself is difficult enough, but to add to it?" Although probably not for Hermione and if this was going to be some sort of SOS system, well, then it needed to be reliable. Lavender would have to start practicing to make sure that her own patronus could be corporeal and not absolutely pathetic.

Hermione offered Lavender an encouraging smile. "Of course I think we can do it. Do you remember the things we managed when the DA first started? Some of those spells we all mastered were far beyond what would have been considered our skill level at the time. It's just building on past knowledge, with a bit of work it shouldn't be too hard." Hermione, while yes, she was smarter than a lot of people, had full confidence in everyone in the DA to be able to perform these spells.

"I've never done it myself, often wondered how it is done, and how much harder it would be, but we weren't really in close quarters with the Order that year, so we missed that lesson. George got it though, he seems pretty sure that we can manage it." She didn't mention too much of why they hadn't been there. No doubt Lavender knew exactly where they'd been, everyone did at that point, but none of them ever talked about it that much, so those months spent hunting horcruxes were a bit of a mystery to the outside world. And the time when Ron had been gone... well now only Hermione knew exactly what had happened then. That thought choked her up a little, and she looked away from Lavender and quickly wiped a tear away that had escaped.

It was strange to see a neutral sort of question about a patronus suddenly be a lot more complicated. Or rather it was strange to see it happen to someone else. In regards to her own life, that sort of thing was normal. It was good to know she wasn't the only one with all sorts of twisty and complicated layers. And seeing Hermione unravel a little, it almost felt too personal, like she was intruding on something she shouldn't see.

"There are thoughts that make a strong heart weak," she said quietly, clearly today she had Longfellow on the mind and it did seem appropriate. At least she wasn't proclaiming she was Hamlet today. There were far too many things of which she couldn't speak and dreams that wouldn't die. Only it was more than a lost youth, so much more now that it was happening again but in what felt like far worse terms.

Lavender didn't know how to comfort Hermione anymore than she knew what she wanted. "That's good, I suppose we'll all have to start focusing on some really good, powerful, happy memories." And maybe that as a project alone would be good because there was a lot of sadness lately.

Hermione was indeed the kind of person whose brain made strange leaps and bounds that most people's didn't, but she was used to being the only one who was able to follow her thoughts, so she of course didn't expect anyone to just jump to her conclusions, but she was pleased to see that Lavender seemed to be keeping up with her crazy mind.

The line was one she recognized, one she had read in one of her mother's poetry books. "Is that Longfellow?" she asked, appreciating that sentiment, as she felt awkward having a moment of weakness in front of her, and honestly in this current company, that was more comforting than anything else she could have said. She of course had no idea if it was aimed at her, or something else, but all the same, it didn't matter.

"Yes, I think we shall have to focus on that. May do everyone some good. It is something I will have to start thinking on more regularly if I'm going to learn what George has to teach." She knew the thought she had focused on in the past, but she figured she had a better one now, even if she had so many more horrible ones as well. "It has been a while since I've last cast a Patronus, I might be a bit rusty, I guess I should do something about that."

Lavender didn't feel the need to linger on the Longfellow quote. Hermione had understood the reference and would take from it what she would. Sometimes it was just best to say things and leave them standing out there for the universe to do what she would with them.

"We did manage them in...well, in hard times before." It just felt different now because like she expressed to Michael there was nothing really keeping them together. If anything Lavender felt they were more splintered now. "Maybe we should practice then." It was a vague sort of asking because Lavender Brown never wanted to be asking Hermione Granger for anything. So, it was just like the Longfellow quote in the regard, left open for further interpretation.

"Yes," Hermione responded. "Yes, we did manage, things just seem so... different, I suppose would be the best way to describe it. I can't decide if things are worse, or just as bad, but perhaps it is just because I am in this particular moment and situation that things seem so much more difficult now."

She wasn't certain, but she thought Lavender was asking if she wanted to practice with her. It would be a good use of time to say the least, and she was always happy to help out a fellow DA member, even if she wasn't terribly close to them. But she could tell from the way it was said that Lavender probably didn't want to ask her out right, so she decided to handle things more delicately as well. "Yes, I think we should. Before the meeting. Would you want to practice with me? We could do it now, if you had no other plans."

Almost equally as weird as seeing Hermione crack a little was the fact that they were sort of thinking the same things. Harry had been an icon and a symbol of hope for her, and even when she was annoyed with frumpy Hermione it was only ever really because of how smart she was and how she never really had to try. But to realize they had things in common? Well, it made a bit more human - only Lavender wasn't sure if that was a good thing or bad thing.

"It could be good, I mean, I don't think I've cast an patronus in like over five years." It didn't even occur to her that her patronus could be different because she was different now, but it would be something to explore and without a crowd was better. Even if that meant some time spent with Hermione.

"And the only other thing I have to do is stop by Michael's to pick up a few of my things." Technically she supposed she was still welcome there, but sometimes she wasn't sure and maybe it was best that she just kept staying at home. It felt a little bit safer down in Eastbourne anyway. "Which is also to say that I don't really have anywhere we can go..."

It was strange for Hermione too to think they may not be as different as she had thought, and that was confusing for her. She didn't really have that much of an interest in being friends with Lavender, and she was fairly certain that the other girl felt the same about her, but Since she'd already offered, it wasn't something she could really back out of now without being terribly impolite, and Hermione hated being impolite.

"It's been quite some time for me as well, can't say I'm upset about not needing to cast one, but times seem to change so quickly I suppose." She wasn't sure what to say about the comment about Michael, she had no idea what was going on between the two of them except that they seemed to be friends, and she knew that Lavender's apartment had been broken into recently, so she supposed it made sense that Michael had offered his flat up to her for a temporary situation. But she didn't feel right asking about it either. "I suppose we could practice at mine, I can push the furniture out of the way in the living room and make room for us to practice, if that works for you."

It was probably for the better that Hermione didn't ask or comment about Michael because there was no easy way to describe what was happening with them. And truly she believed that no one outside of the two of them would really understand it. Sometimes she wasn't even sure they really understood what they were doing, but maybe that was okay.

"That's fine, I mean as long as your flat allows dogs and I mean Baby Girl is well behaved." The other option was to leave Baby Girl in her aunt and uncle's flat, but that sort of defeated the purpose of bringing her to London. And really, Lavender would feel even just a little bit better with familiar company, which would make things better for all of them. "And won't chew your furniture or bark or anything, I man she'll probably just want to find somewhere and take a nap."

Hermione nodded. "Yes pets are allowed, as long as she won't bother Crookshanks too much, though I imagine he'll perch himself on top of a book case and be perfectly fine. My flat actually has very large windows that open to a small garden, so if she likes napping in the sun I think she might enjoy that."

Hermione led the way out of Diagon Alley. "I live in the muggle part of London so my parents can visit me easier when there in town, but it's just a short walk." Soon enough they had arrived at the flat, and once the place was set up properly, they were able to begin their practice.
