RP: Sam, G
Who: Sam, G
Where: LA, NYC
When: October 29, 2010
Summary: Sam and G go from following a terrorist to the Omega reality in the blink of an eye

They were running down an empty, gun out and ready. No one seemed to be around, but Sam could hear the foot steps. Sam and G quicked the pace, moving in unison without having to say a word; a simple look once in a while was more than enough to say everything they meant to say. Faster, closer, Sam could now see the suspect. He blinked as a glimmer appeared; the sun must have hit against some metal surface. Sam paid no attention, too used to go after his target no matter the condition.

"Stop! Federal agents," he warned, just before the suspect shot at them without even looking. One day one of these assholes would stop, but today wasn't the day. He and G shot back, still running. The glimmer was back, but he dismissed it and when they moved past it, everything seemed to change and stay the same at the same time.

The suspect was gone, Sam couldn't hear footsteps, and things were slightly different: a garbage can that wasn't there before, cars that appeared out of no where. Training had him surveying the area, looking for treats, while moving closer to G, ready to protect his partner. "What the- What did just happen, G?"

G pulled up short, stepping closer to Sam as he took in the sudden changes -- the stripped sedan appearing where there'd been none, the 'authorized personnel only' sign disappearing from above the backdoor of the nearby restaurant.

The sudden heavy static in his earpiece.

"I...have no idea."

When tapping the earpiece didn't clear the static, he tugged his cell from his pocket. But, the display was black. Tapping the power button didn't bring it back up. "Battery's dead. It was fully charged when we left the office." None of this was making any sense. He tapped the ear piece again. "Eric?"

There was no response.

Nodding behind them, he started moving back the way they'd come. "Let's get back to the car."

This made no sense. He tried his ear piece as well with no result. One malfunction was already improbable with the kind of technology they had at their disposal, but two was impossible.

"Things have changed." It sounded crazy even to his own ears, but they had solid proof right in front of their eyes.

The gun moved with his eye trajectory, ready for anything, but nothing was coming their way. The trek to the car was much slower. They weren't running and Sam was visually checking all the spots where people could hide.

The street where the car was supposed to be wasn't the street, but the sign proclaimed it to be. "Where's my car? Who took the Challenger?"

G frowned as he scanned the street. Out here, it was even more apparently they weren't where they were supposed to be. The sign said Wilshire Blvd. and Vermont. But, there was no Metro station. The spires of Immanuel Presbyterian were missing in the opposite direction.

And their car was gone.

"You've got to be kidding me." Cars were stolen in L.A. every day. But, this was unbelievable. It was strange and G didn't appreciate strange. The guy they'd been after got away. Things changed. Landmarks were gone. It was like a trip on bad LSD.

G put his gun away and moved to examine the place where they'd parked the car. Nothing. No broken glass, no tools left behind. Even more strangely, the curb was green. "Do you remember this being a short-term zone?"

Sam wasn't ready to holster his gun, not when they were in a strange place, despite still being in LA. "Did you see him spray anything?" Some sort of hallucinogen spray could maybe explain this. Maybe. "We had different things for lunch." They couldn't have been poisoned at lunch, and they had gone for the op center to here. It had to be something here.

He shook his head. "No, it's not, and that's not the only problem, and you know that. Did you see that light? I thought it was a reflection, but maybe it's something else, some sort of agent that's affecting us." Although even that didn't really make sense, but he couldn't think of anything else.

"No." G shook his head. "Nothing sprayed."

Frowning, he looked back down the alley they'd come out of. There had been a reflection, like the way the road rippled in the distance on a hot day. Only this was a back alley on a relatively cool fall afternoon. And there wasn't anything in the alley clean enough to cause that sort of reflection. "Some sort of agent," he repeated. "And we're hallucinating the exact same things? That doesn't make any sense."

G stood on the sidewalk, hands on his hips as he looked up and down the street. "One of us would be one thing. But, both of us seeing the same things? Or not seeing the same things? Unless I'm the only one of us not seeing the hundred year old church that should be there?"

"G, nothing makes sense. Cars that should be here aren't, cars that shouldn't are, signs have disappeared, fences have changed. Unless I'm hallucinating and you aren't here, but that makes even less sense," he said.

Sam took out his iPhone, but there was no signal. "Nothing. I should have service here, but nothing. The ear piece is dead. Did someone put us asleep and moved us?" Not that it made sense either, because they would have remembered something. "I got nothing. Do you want to try and go to the boat house? We can borrow one of these cars."

"Clearly aliens must be involved," G said with a snort. "We'll wake up tomorrow with memories of questionable probes.

Sam was right. None of this made any sense and trying to make sense out of it wasn't helping. They needed to get off the streets and assess where they stood before figuring out how they'd come to be standing there at all. It was unlikely they were hallucinating. Cities didn't change over night, let alone in the span of time it took to run from one end of any alley to another.

Raising an eyebrow, G smirked at his partner. "Advocating stealing a car, Sam?"

"I'll watch your back and you watch mine," Sam answered with a tiny smile, because the only thing that seemed the same was G. As long as they were fine, they would figure things out.

Sam rolled his eyes. "I'm appropriating a vehicle under the jurisdiction of the federal government with every intention of returning the vehicle or pay for it, unless Hetty kills me for whatever damage we're about to cause."

He looked around and sighed. "Some of these cars don't exist, G." He nodded. "There, you can't go wrong with a corvette. Come on, let's get out."

"Just like always." G's smirk grew more pronounced for a moment before he turned his attention back to the business at hand.

Finding transportation.

"My money's on Hetty," he said drily. It was said as a joke; but, he both refused to bet against their all-knowing office manager and assumed between the two of them, in a situation like this, they were sure to cause damage. Especially as half the cars were unfamiliar models and some of these manufacturer logos had to be fakes. G liked to think he was a man who knew a thing or two about cars. But, he didn't recognise some of these at all.

"Corvette it is. Nice choice."

"Your money is always on Hetty. It'd be stupid not to." Through the years, they'd been shot at, driven off the road, slammed against. Sam had a feeling that things were about to get worse.

"So, are you going to stare at it or are you going to open it? I'd wait for Kensi, but my phone isn't working." The statement was delivered with a straight face, but they both knew he was joking.

He stood around, scanning the area while G opened and hot wired the car. Only when G could pay attention to his surrounding, Sam got into the car. "Let's get the hell out of here and see if we can figure out what's going on."

G merely smirked. No one with any sense would bet against Hetty on these things. The woman probably knew more ways to kill a man than the entire team combined. At least that was G's assumption.

"Just for that, I'm driving." Raising an eyebrow as he opened the car door and lid into the driver's seat, G took care of getting the car started. While Sam got in, he took over scanning the area, as he continually took in the situation. He waited only long enough for Sam's door to close and his partner to be settled before pulling away from the curb and heading west on Wilshire toward the beach.

Pushing the surreality of a city changed to the back of his mind, he focused on not missing the details...or possible street changes making sure they weren't being followed.

And it was very surreal. He'd grown up in this town, been with the NCIS team here for several years. G knew Los Angeles and this wasn't Los Angeles. Familiar landmarks were altered or missing. Gang territories seemed to have changed, local tagging proclaiming the wrong claims.

That it only took 15 minutes on Wilshire to drive from Downtown to the beach was the most surreal of all -- even at the speeds G normally drove.

"Any thoughts on Plan B if the beach house isn't there," he asked Sam as he took the turn-off onto PCH that headed to their safehouse.

"It'll be there." The declaration would have been more convincing if more and more things were missing, things like entire buildings which couldn't have disappeared over night.

He took out the phone and checked again, but it was still useless. "Check yours." Not that he really expected anything differently at this point. "If it's not there, we do what we've always done. We ditch the car since it's hotter than Fallujah in the summer, we go undercover, we gather intel, and we figure out what's going on. Until then we survive." He might have been spoilt with all the tech support NCIS gave them, but he was a SEAL, he could and would survive without it and would make sure his partner did the same.

As G pulled up, Sam took a deep breath. "We're about to find out."

These powers were a curse and a blessing. He didn't even know they were there at the beginning. The blinding headaches that arrived with the first people that crossed over had been scary and not illuminating a all. It took a while to get adjusted and understand what they meant, time in which people from his dimension got lost somewhere into this new world.

In the past weeks, he'd been able to improve. The first time he could sense someone without being on the floor from the pain, he knew that they were somewhere in middle America, then it was a state, and now a city. Thankfully, the scientists here could pick up for anomalies and narrow it down even further. Cameras did the rest, at least in the big cities. Technically it was the perfect system. Practically, they had yet to detain and interrogate any of the new arrivals.

When the headache arrived, his people began searching for anomalies in Los Angeles. They were working in an abandoned Army base in Brooklyn, but in the past month, more and more of the base became active. They already had their gas station, a small number of houses, a tech center that made him miss his MTAC, and a jail. It was slow work, but then the cameras went live.

"Right on time," he said as he heard the door open, not even bothering to check who it was. Hetty had a way to be there when things happened. "Let's see if we can finally get someone." Different cameras streamed on the screen, covering the area were the anomaly was sensed, and now it was up to them to scan for anyone who looked out of place.

"Stop, zoom in on the picture on the left hand corner." He stepped closer to the screen and smiled. "I'll be damned. Those two, scan for them." He finally turned. "They'll know if they are being followed. Where are they going?"

Hetty watched the video feeds in silence. Though she made it a point to know what was going on where, she rarely intervened unless the group was unruly or off track. Even though these weren't 'her' people, they were getting there and she let them do their job.

Until Leon spotted their quarry and she allowed herself an enigmatic smile.

"They'll try to check in," she said, "follow protocol as long as they can before striking out on their own. That road would lead them to our safehouse. From there, they might try the office. But, after that, they'll disappear."

Even in another dimension, she'd put her money on those two being able to drop off the radar completely before most others could blink.

He had assumed so. All NCIS agents were trained for the unexpected, and he couldn't imagine anything more unexpected than this, but Hetty knew these two men better than anyone else, and he would have considered deviating from procedures if her instinct told her otherwise.

"422 Ocean Avenue, in Seal Beach. Send two- make it three units. I want them in position when they get there." Hopefully, they would continue to follow procedures. "Put everyone on notice. They will shoot to kill the moment they think they are being fired upon. We need them tranquillized before they can reach for their guns." He didn't want anyone hurt, on either side. These agents and soldiers weren't NCIS, but they were still his responsibility.

Leon turned to Hetty. "Should we have tea while we wait?"

Sam got out of the car and pulled out his gun. The boat house was there, right were it should have been, but even from the outside, things were wrong. The door was painted yellow and no way that anyone had planted those palm trees overnight.

He walked, scanning all around. "Something is wrong." It was too quiet. There were always people around this area, and now it was empty, the same way areas were empty when they cleared them for an operation.

Sam tensed immediately. He walked back, closer to his partner. He moved his gun, keeping it on his line of sight as he searched for whatever was wrong, but there were too many places were people could hide. "Something is going down, G."

He heard the swoosh from the rifle before he saw the black BDUs. He pushed G out of the way, trying to protect him, before he could check, he was out cold.

When he woke up, he was in an interrogation room. Things might be different, but not that different. The dark room with no windows and the big mirror on one side would only be an interrogation room. At least he wasn't dead. He cleared his head and sat up, breathing easier when he saw G. He crawled to his friend. "G, wake up."

"I hate needles," G complained upon waking, sitting up. When he did, he didn't like what he saw. "Did I miss all the fun, or is the party waiting for me?" This day just kept getting better and better. While G might be used to not knowing himself, he usually had a very good handle on his surroundings and the given situation. First the city changed, then the beach house turned into an ambush.

Now this.

"This was not in the Plan B." Smirking half-heartedly at his partner, G shook his head. Asking where they were was pointless. He doubted Sam had any better idea than he did -- somewhere they didn't want to be. "You alright?"

If it were him in charge here, he'd have someone standing on the other side of that glass, watching and listening in addition to video and audio recordings. And, so, he stayed sitting, feigning mild disorientation for the benefit of their watchers, while he spoke to Sam under his breath. "Any idea how long we've been out?"

"I thought you hated furniture," Sam answered as he offered him a hand to get up. As he did so, he turned his wrist toward G. "Way too long." This was controlled and they knew exactly what they were doing or they'd be dead already.

He nodded. "I'll be better when we find out what's going on."

As soon as they notified him that they were awake, Leon walked through the base and into the jail. They had everything set up for hostility and resistance. It was luck that the first people they had retrieved were his agents.

He walked into the room, smiling at the two. "Gentlemen, I can say that it's really good to see you. Mr. Callen, you'll find the chair is a lot more comfortable than the floor, and Hetty will probably charge you for washing those jeans.

"I apologize for the way you were brought here, but there was no way to explain while you were in L.A., at least not without you two shooting someone." He looked at the two of them. "There's a lot that you will need to learn and some of what I'm about to say will sound crazy, but not worse than anything we've deal before."

"No, I hate needles," G confirmed, grasping Sam's hand though he didn't really need the help up. "Furniture is an unnecessary luxury."

Further quips remained unspoken when the door to the interrogation room opened and a man G could honestly say he hadn't been expecting to see walked through it. "Director Vance." Confused curiosity kept him from smirking as he otherwise might. "Pretty sure I get to expense items damaged under the boss' orders."

Though he took a seat, it was with a wary eye on Vance. Under normal circumstances, he'd be willing to trust Vance. But, given the manner of their arrival in this room, he felt justified in his current reserve. He did snort softly, however, at the suggestion he and Sam would have done quite a bit of damage to their assailants if given a chance. Raising an eyebrow, he waited for Vance to continue.

Leon smiled in return. "I'm sure that Hetty will disagree since no one is telling you to stay on the floor, but you can ask her yourself. She should be here soon." As soon as she had the full files on these two, or at least Sam. G's file seemed to be just as thin here as it was in their reality.

"On October 1, 2010, there was an experiment that was supposed to help the military move through dimensions. For some reasons, scientists thought it was neat and the military thought it could give them strategic advances. It didn't go as well. There's some sort of interdimensional rift that brings people from different realities to... here. I call it the Omega reality, since it's our ending point." He sighed. "And yes, I know this sounds insane, but you have seen the differences. There are more, a lot more. We're currently in New York City, capital of the US. That's just the beginning of the differences."

"When Hetty got here, she said that I official took a leave from NCIS, but I was still there because she spoke to Gibbs, so we're assuming that our counterparts land in our reality and the government has been dealing with it." He still couldn't imagine how his wife and children were dealing with this, but he couldn't afford to think of that right now. "When we come here, we seem to acquire powers. It takes some time to discover them and some getting used to it. Since we can't predict who comes, the government here created the Interdimensional Criminal Investigation Service. ICIS, I liked it, which is important since they named me director." He looked at the two of the. "You two have just been recruited."

"If those clothes require cleaning, Mr. Callen, it will be coming out of your pay."

Hetty placed two file folders on the table in the centre of the room as soon as she entered. It seemed a small conceit. But, as the odds against even both her and Leon appearing in a new world so close together were so neatly stacked, she had taken the liberty of starting the search for this dimension's counterparts to some of the individuals this new agency could use. Preparation sometimes paid off.

"Oh my, Leon, what did you tell them to put those looks on their faces?" she asked with a sigh, glancing at Callen, whose eyebrows were likely to find new homes on the back of his skull at the rate they were climbing.

Leon gave the two men a small smile, before turning to shrug. "I don't know. I mention alternate reality, super powers, doppelgänger and they get that look. You'd think I said something strange."

He turned around and looked at the two folders. If Hetty put them there, then there wasn't anything new that he needed to know. The thickness of the folders made it easy to distinguish them and he pushed one in each direction.

"These contain the information we have on your counterparts. The information is known to Hetty, me and now you. It will be disclosed on a need to know basis." He nodded. "Take a look and then Hetty will make sure that they stay safe."

"Nothing strange at all, Sir." The words were proper, but the tone was laced with sarcasm as G pulled the thin file closer.

He stared at the folder a moment too long before flipping it open, debating if he truly wanted to open it and find out -- what? Would his parents' be the same? Would their names be written on one of those few pages? If this whole thing wasn't an elaborate set-up designed to get them to reveal something he couldn't fathom, did he have a counterpart in some alternate dimension who had managed to keep the past G had lost?

Did he have a name?

When he did finally examine the papers, he bit back a sigh -- of disappointment or relief he couldn't tell -- and pushed the folder closer to the centre of the table once more.

"So, what next?" Impossible as it sounded, there didn't seem to be anything for it but to go with the explanation and do what he'd always done -- go where his government sent him.

Sam had stayed quiet while absorbing everything. He was part of his training; it was instinctual to listen to your superior officer, but his mind was racing. He had to admit that this possibility had never entered his mind when thinking of possible scenarios that justified the eeriness encountered in Los Angeles. However, the files shifted his attention.

He eyed G for a moment, and then opened his own. He had never left the navy and he was married... to a man. His stomach tightened, experiencing something he hadn't since SEAL training: nausea. He looked up at Vance and Hetty, then closed the file. "You okay?" he asked G, because it was easier to deal with that than the fact that his carefully guarded secret was out.

"What happens to them?" he said, nodding at his folder. "What will they be told?"

Hetty watched in silence as the two men looked over the lives they could have had in another time and place...or not, in Callen's case. She knew everything that was in those files, having put them together herself. And, she knew these two well enough to have a good idea how each was reacting to these revelations though they said nothing to give those reactions away.

"They will be told what they need to know." Collecting the file folders from the table, she tucked them under her arm. "This is a time to let the lie stand, Mr. Hanna."

A family man himself, he knew how hard it must be for Hanna, but he said nothing. He could share with Callen if he wanted.

"As I said, we acquire powers. They don't come immediately, or not in my experience. They are also very painful at the beginning, but whether that's true for everyone we don't know," he explained.

"This is a former army base. There's an hotel type quarters that we have cleaned up. You'll have rooms there, and no, Mr. Callen, you may not change room every few days. There are computers set up, wifi, books. Take the rest of the day to catch up, and tomorrow we see if we can find out about your powers."
