"Nothing strange at all, Sir." The words were proper, but the tone was laced with sarcasm as G pulled the thin file closer.
He stared at the folder a moment too long before flipping it open, debating if he truly wanted to open it and find out -- what? Would his parents' be the same? Would their names be written on one of those few pages? If this whole thing wasn't an elaborate set-up designed to get them to reveal something he couldn't fathom, did he have a counterpart in some alternate dimension who had managed to keep the past G had lost?
Did he have a name?
When he did finally examine the papers, he bit back a sigh -- of disappointment or relief he couldn't tell -- and pushed the folder closer to the centre of the table once more.
"So, what next?" Impossible as it sounded, there didn't seem to be anything for it but to go with the explanation and do what he'd always done -- go where his government sent him.
