WHO: Friar Tuck Will Stutely, Daniel Collins
WHEN: Sunday afternoon
WHERE: Tuck's church and parsonage
WHAT: More chats, some of the difficult
WARNINGS: TBA

Every new first with Daniel and Michaela seemed like the best thing ever, and Tuck experienced a brand new 'best thing ever' during his sermon on Sunday morning. He looked up just as he took to the pulpit, to see his son, Daniel, smiling at him from the back row, his arms around Amelia. His son and granddaughter were in his church and he was about to do an entire sermon on the importance of family, found family, and love.

His entire body felt so warm and light, it was just lucky for his parishioners he didn't try to sing the sermon.

When he was finished, Tuck was uncharacteristically uninterested in chatting while he made a beeline for Daniel. "You came!" he grinned, opening his arms up for a hug. "I'm thrilled to see you both here!"

"We wanted to check it out," Daniel said, bouncing Amelia a little bit. She was falling asleep on his shoulder. "This is a really beautiful church, Dad."

Tuck was filled with such affection and love, and he wanted to just sit down with Daniel and talk, but he still had work to do. "Will you stay for awhile after? I can make us some lunch and Stutely is around somewhere! I should go check in with a few people, but I would love to chat if you have time."

"Dad," Daniel smiled at him, "I have time. Go make sure your people are alright, we'll be here."

Tuck gave Daniel an adoring smile and he rubbed his arms a little, "Thank you," he said fondly.

He made his rounds, chatting and catching up with everyone who wanted to talk to him. Every once in a while he would cast his eyes over to Daniel, who was always there just like he said he would be, occasionally chatting to someone himself. By the time everyone cleared out, Tuck went to hook his arm through Stutely's. "Dan and Amelia are here!" he said to his friend. "Do you want to come meet my son and granddaughter?" It was clear from every single thing about him, that Tuck couldn't wait to show off his son and granddaughter to his friend. His pride in them radiated off of him like the sun.

"Dad said the day he showed up I didn't get one father, I got seven, and two moms," Daniel chuckled. "I like that. If I have any questions, I'll ask," he agreed.

Tuck sort of guided them into the parsonage then, and shut the door behind them. "Here's the place. It's not so grand, but it's home," he said fondly. Compared to Daniel's house, the parsonage was tiny, but it suited Tuck. It looked homey and lived in. "Come sit at the table so I can talk to you while I cook," he said, leading them into the kitchen.

Once Stutely and Daniel were seated, little sleeping Amelia just outside the kitchen in her pram, Tuck started bustling about putting ingredients together. "Dad, are you sure you don't need any help?" Daniel asked.

"No no, I love doing this!" Tuck said, beaming. "I haven't cooked for you since you were eight, let me do this." He paused for a moment, to smile fondly at Daniel. "It means so much to me to have you here," he said, looking like he was going to tear up again. Then he turned to start chopping things up.

"Alright, here's a question," Daniel said, turning to Stutely with the full knowledge that Tuck could hear every word he was saying, "is my Dad happy? Aside from having his kids back, because I can see how much that means to him. And it means just as much to me," he added, just in case Tuck thought it didn't.

Tuck focused very much on chopping and not thinking too much about that question.

God. Will supposed it didn't really matter how old your kids got, they always had a way of homing in on the awkward questions.

He thought about it a moment, trying to find his way to an answer that was true without being... crushingly honest. "I wouldn't want to speak for him," he said carefully, "but I know he's found a lot of happiness in this place he's built for himself. He pours his heart into this parish and it gives him a lot of joy back. And him and Scarlet, they make each other happy. They're a good match. It's subtle," he added with a small, conspiratorial smile, "but if you look hard, you might be able to tell they're loopy for each other."

The deflection spilled off his tongue smoothly. Maybe it'd even be enough to distract Daniel from the fact that Will hadn't fully answered the question.

"I'd have asked him, but he would have deflected even harder than you just did," Daniel said, though he said it gently and without frustration.

"You got me there," Tuck admitted. "We can chat more about that over lunch. Will's right though, I am quite happy with my lovely community, and totally gaga over Scarlet."

Daniel chucked, "that I never doubted!"

"It's going to be exceedingly strange having someone as perceptive to my building as me around," Tuck said, amused. "Do you still hate mushrooms, Dan?"

Daniel looked shocked at that. "Uh...yes. You remember that?"

At that, Tuck had to put down his knife to just breathe for a moment. "I remember everything," he admitted quietly. "I remember you wanted to be a pirate when you grew up, your favorite sheets were the ones with the dinosaurs. You couldn't sleep until I kissed you goodnight. And your favorite food was blueberry pancakes so I used to make them for you with a little blueberry smiley face. And for thirty years, every time I saw blueberry pancakes on a menu I couldn't breathe for a moment."

Daniel sat there in shock for a second, before leaning in to stage whisper to will, "this is when we hug him, right?"

Will smiled. There was an old sorrow in that smile, but it was tempered by warmth. "Reckon you're well up to that job, son." He looked over at his friend, not alarmed, just checking how he was going. Thirty years. Tuck had been on a blissful high since finding his kids, but a loss like that didn't just go away. To Daniel, he added lightly, "You're a father, too. You'll know. If not yet, then soon enough. It's the little things that are precious."

(Robert's favourite food had been treacle pudding. Will had taught him how to find wild berries in the wood, raspberries and blackberries and tangy little bilberries, and some summer days he'd come home with his face and hands stained with the purple juices. He'd liked to be tucked in tight, though he'd always kicked the covers off in his sleep regardless. He'd had a quick head for figures, like his mother, and he had loved to sit at her knee as she worked on the books. Will had made him his own play money, so he wouldn't confuse Lucy's sums, but within a few years he he'd been helping her count out the pub's takings.)

"I reckon I can handle it too," he said, jumping up to take Tuck into his arms. "I hate that she kept us apart," Daniel growled into his father's shoulder. "If we had known, we would have fought tooth and nail to get back to you."

Tuck sniffled a little, but he was really grateful for the hug. "That means so much to me," he said, stepping back to smile at Daniel. He gave the man's arms a squeeze and went back to his chopping. "If I had known she was treating you like shit, I would have fought tooth and nail too. I thought I was leaving you with a great mum." Norah hadn't been the primary caregiver, but she hadn't been awful either.

Daniel sat back down and he sighed. "Did you know the Care Bears are from the devil?" he asked. "I don't actually think there was a show on television she didn't develop some kind of strong feelings about. They were demonic or 'worldly'. And we can't be worldly."

"What does that even mean," Tuck asked.

"Fuck if I know," Daniel snorted. "I think it means, having any urges whatsoever, actually. And let me tell you how awkward two children with healthy functioning libidos find it growing up without a father figure to tell us it was fine, with a mother who told us we were dirty little shits."

"She told you you were...fuuucking hell," Tuck groaned, now angry chopping.

It didn't come as any surprise – Tuck had mentioned their mother had been worse than he could've imagined, and Daniel had alluded to an unhappy upbringing – but the description of Norah's cruelty still sickened Will. Two innocent little kids struggling to come to grips with the loss of a parent, and she'd given them only fear and shame. It was awful, and enraging. Perhaps Norah'd had reason to be frightened to Tuck, not knowing what he was, but, god, to take that out on her own children. Quietly, he said, "I'm glad the two of you got out of there. Sounds like you both took good care of each other."

Daniel smiled at Will, "we had to. Michaela told me she was trans when she was fifteen, but she didn't feel safe telling Mom until a little after her seventeenth birthday. Mom had her committed," he explained for Will's benefit, since Tuck already knew. "Seventy-two hour psych hold. I had already applied for and gotten a place at SVA here, so for those seventy-two hours I barely slept and arranged everything. I bought a car off a friend, packed it full of stuff while she slept, picked Michaela up from the hospital and we were off. Technically, Michaela was a runaway so we were so careful for an entire year, before we found out she hadn't even bothered to report Michaela missing."

Tuck was very much concentrating on angrily grating some potatoes up for hashbrowns. He had been told all this, but that didn't mean it didn't still piss him off. "Important enough to keep me away, but not important enough to report her own kid missing."

"We only contacted her again after Michaela turned eighteen and there were no legality issues," Daniel explained. "She didn't even care. Didn't send any money. Nothing. Michaela couldn't work that first year and I was in university and trying to work enough to keep us fed and a roof over our heads. We shared this shitty studio apartment with a hot plate and no oven. One double bed. Don't regret it for a second."

God. No wonder Michaela was nervous about meeting the rest of the Merry Men. He'd inferred that Norah had given the lass a particularly tough time, but for Michaela to have summoned the courage to tell her mother, only to find herself thrown into a mental hospital for it... Will couldn't begin to imagine what that must have been like, but he could well imagine she might be reluctant to open herself up to more rejection from family.

"You did what you had to to protect your sister," he said. "That's something to be proud of."

"I am proud," Daniel nodded, to which Tuck smiled to himself. "And I'm proud of her for getting through it too. There were...entire weeks where we ate nothing but plain white rice because it was cheap and rent was due. But we made it because we stuck together. We were careful with each other's space and time. Respectful like Dad taught us to be. Came out even closer, if that were possible."

Tuck stopped grating and he turned to his son. "I'm proud of both of you too. I didn't know what or who I would find when I went searching, and to find you two both doing so well and loving each other... I told a woman at the supermarket how proud I was yesterday. I don't think she cared though," Tuck laughed.

"I am not even a little surprised you did that," Daniel laughed. "You still haven't heard Michaela sing! It's amazing. She is something else on stage. You can't tear your eyes away from her. She's so talented."

"We should get everyone together and go to a drag show, Stutely! See Michaela perform!" Tuck grinned.

"She's a performer?" That drew a genuine smile from Will. They'd been put through some hell, these two, but they'd made it out the other side together. "That'd be nice. Reckon Clio would enjoy that, too. Only if Michaela's alright with it, of course, don't want to crowd her before she's ready."

"She is! It's different when she's on stage too. She can be shy in person, but on stage she isn't shy at all. I'll ask, but I think she'd be okay with a crowd."

Tuck started to fry the hashbrowns and cook the insides of the omelettes. "I can't wait to go sit in the front row and lose my shit," he said, a fair evaluation of what he was going to do. "How's my granddaughter over there?"

"Still out like a light," Daniel chuckled, watching her. "I might have to wake her up to give her lunch if she doesn't do it herself. Then she'll be cranky, but she makes the cutest pouty faces," Daniel said, clearly as enamored with his daughter as Tuck was with him. "So what do you do, Will?"

"So you're an artist too then," Daniel grinned. His art tended to the less practical and more scenic, though he was quite good at pottery when he could be bothered. Mostly he stuck to painting because painting was what he loved. When someone could create entirely useful things out of raw materials, Daniel was always a little bit in awe.

"I tried glass blowing for a while, because I wanted to go some more practical art, but I was terrible at it," he laughed. "And I was constantly inuring myself, and Bee - that's my wife - finally had to put her foot down because I thought I would eventually learn and she had to point out I was more likely to eventually burn my fingers off before I learned. So it's best if I don't get anywhere near anything used for wood-working!

"Painting though- Put a paintbrush in my hands and I lose track of time. There's nothing in the world but me and that canvas taking shape in front of me."

It felt strange to hear his work compared to painting or glass-blowing. Sure, there was a certain art to woodwork. It wasn't just a matter of knowing how each piece fit into the whole or how to make sure the weight would balance evenly, you needed a sense of what would look decent. But it wasn't, like... artisan stuff. Stick chairs were made for sitting in, not admiring. Mostly, he just kept things simple and let the wood do the talking.

But Will smiled to hear Daniel enthusing about painting. Maybe he wasn't an artist, but that feeling of the world narrowing down to you and the task at your fingertips, and the satisfaction of something tangible taking shape? Yeah, he thought he could relate to that a bit. It sounded as though Daniel and Michaela had both found their passions, and built something of them, too. "Tuck said you were always artistic, even as a tyke. I'd love to see your work."

"It got difficult to do after Dad died," Daniel explained, pulling out his phone. "Mom would confiscate the pictures or the things I used to make them. She wanted us both to be pastors. Here," he scrolled to one of his online galleries and handed his phone over to Stutely. "That's one of my more recent collections. I never really could settle on a style, so I dabble in all sorts, but this is more street art, bit of punk. Lots of colours." Daniel could paint the most realistic portrait one day, and a completely strange piece of modern art the next.

"I can't wait to hang some up around here," Tuck grinned.

Will scrolled through the gallery, marvelling at Daniel's work. He didn't know a thing about art, but it looked damned impressive. There was something real and raw in the colours; he didn't know how to articulate it. It spoke of passion.

(This was why he wasn't comfortable calling himself an artist. Will could make a fine-looking chair or knock together a dollhouse for a six-year-old, but he couldn't do anything like this, dreaming up worlds and bringing them to life on canvas.)

He passed the phone back to Daniel, smiling. "They're incredible. You've got a serious talent."

"Thank you," Daniel said, sincerely. He knew his work wasn't for everyone, and he really appreciated when people liked it.

"And here we go," Tuck carried three bacon and cheese omelettes and a bunch of hashbrowns over to the table. "I can make something for Amelia when she wakes up," he said, taking a seat. "Dig in."

Daniel took a bite and sighed happily. "This tastes like my childhood. The happy part of it."

"That just means I've been making hashbrowns the same way for forty years," Tuck laughed. He was trying to stall because they were eating lunch now, which meant he should probably talk about the sheriff.

"Nothing wrong with consistency, not when it tastes this good." Will shot Tuck a small grin as he dug into his own lunch. The hash browns were deliciously crisp.

But as he caught the Friar's eye, Will thought he saw a hesitation there. Like there was something else he wanted to say, but he was still working his way round to it. Will didn't comment on it, just took another bite of his meal and waited.

Oh god, here we go.

"You asked if I was happy," Tuck started right in, because he honestly didn't know how to preamble this. "I am. I love my church and my family, and Will. And having you and Michaela back is just- There aren't words for what it means to me," Tuck said earnestly. "But we're here, Stutely and I, because belief brought us here. And it brought others too. Namely...Guy of Gisbourne, Prince John, and the Sheriff of Nottingham. They're all here in the city and they're all...awful."

Daniel put down his fork then and he met Tuck's eye, "are they after you?"

Tuck didn't even hesitate before he answered honestly, "yes."

Will watched Daniel's face quietly for a reaction. God, it felt awful dropping this on him. The lad had seen his father shot dead as a child. Now he was as good as hearing that it could happen again.

They had to know, though. It wasn't fair to keep it from them, not when it concerned their safety and not when it concerned someone they loved. But shit, it felt cruel.

"We're all of us shaped by our stories. The Sheriff, his is a simple one: he exists to come after us. So that's what he does." He was careful with his words; he wasn't sure just how much Tuck wanted to tell Daniel. The full truth of it was hideously bleak.

Daniel glanced back and forth between his father and Will. "Is he the person who broke your nose?" Daniel asked warily.

Tuck sort of absently raised his fingers to his nose, testing if it was still tender. It was, but it had mostly healed. "He is," Tuck acknowledged anyway. "I caught him snooping around and he wasn't thrilled about it."

Daniel poked at his lunch with his fork a few times before throwing the fork down. "Well fuck!" he exclaimed. "I don't know what do with that!"

Tuck reached out to put his hand on Daniel's shoulder. "It's alright, Dan. No matter what happens, I'll always come back."

"You know, Dad, that is really the least reassuring thing you could have said to me," Daniel explained, his voice a little wavery, "because it sounds like you expect him to kill you." Tuck made a sort of guilty face at that and Daniel's eyes widened, "oh my god, how many times has he killed you!" Then, when Tuck looked up to the roof and started counting on his fingers, Daniel flapped his hands at his father. "Stop that! Jesus Christ."

"We're not going to let him kill anyone," said Will firmly, and mercifully opted not to finish that sentence with again. He turned to Daniel with sympathy in his eyes. "It's been a bad few months, I won't lie. We're all treading lightly at the moment, and yeah, the danger is real. But we've beat him before."

Daniel didn't look entirely reassured, as he stared at Will. "Did you die in the last few months?" he asked pointedly, and Tuck made the guilty face again. Daniel just groaned and scrubbed at his face with his hands, and then his phone rang and he jumped.

Pulling it back out to glance at the caller ID, his lips thinned when he said 'Mother' there. "Oh godddddd," he moaned, immediately hanging up on Sarah. "She's going to try back in a moment. She always does. I don't know what to say to her. Fuck it." He switched his phone off and stowed it back in his pocket.

"Right. So you all just...live with these three arch villains coming after you?" Daniel asked. "You'd think they'd move on or something."

"Belief is a powerful thing," Tuck sighed. "Dan- You should eat your lunch, son."

Daniel groaned, but he picked his fork back up. "I suppose it was always going to be like this. Can't just have something good without the bad."

Will looked down at his plate, his appetite gone. "Maybe not," he conceded, sighing. "I'm sorry, lad. It's a shit of a thing to have to lay on you. If it helps any... we're not completely on our own. Tuck's had a couple of saint friends keeping watch over the church."

"No, I- I'd rather know now," Daniel said, shaking his head. "Rather know before I witness something awful again when I could have seen it coming. I'm glad you told me. I wish there was something I could do to help," he groaned.

At that though, Daniel raised his eyebrows. "You have saint friends?"

"I do," Tuck smiled. "Francis. One of my oldest friends who isn't a merry man. He's been incredibly helpful, as has his entire family."

"Like...Saint Francis? The bird guy?"

Tuck laughed, "that's the one. He would be delighted to be known as the bird guy. I've known him almost thirty years," he explained, and then he faltered a little, remembering how he had met Francis in the first place.

Will could take a good guess where his friend's thoughts had gone. Tuck had talked about what a bad place he'd been in when Francis had found him, sleeping rough on the streets of San Francisco after his previous attempt to find his family had led only to heartbreak.

"He's a good bloke," Will put in smoothly. "Gentlest soul you'll ever met, and he scares the living daylights out of the Sheriff." He almost mentioned the rats, but that would involve bringing up Tuck being killed again, which seemed like... not the best idea.

"How does a gentle person scare the sheriff?" Daniel asked, and Tuck chuckled.

"He has his ways," Tuck replied enigmatically. "I'm sorry. Not all the ins and outs of being us are pleasant."

"Putting it lightly," Daniel mused. "Bee's mom just can't stop ordering stuff off the TV. Would they- Would these men hurt me? Or Michaela? Or Billie and-" Daniel glanced over at his sleeping daughter.

"I don't believe so," Tuck was quick to say, "they tend to believe they're doing the right thing so 'innocent' people are safe. Will and I are thieves, you see. Criminals. So they can justify their actions."

Will wasn't so sure about that. The Sheriff might not outright hurt somebody he considered an innocent, but if he knew that innocent meant something to the Merry Men, if he thought they'd been led astray, would he see it as fair game to use them to get to his quarry? At what point might he decide they were accomplices, and therefore deserving of punishment themselves? And Gisborne, shit, Gisborne didn't care about doing the right thing, he only cared about coming out on top. The sadistic fuck would probably get a kick out of coming at the gang through their loved ones. The Prince, he didn't like to get his hands dirty, but it wasn't out of any concern for innocents. If he was feeling the right kind of spiteful, and he was confident it wouldn't blow back on him, Will reckoned he'd happily send Gisborne to rough up a family member or two.

He'd been thinking a lot about these things since he and Clio had started getting serious.

But instead of all that, he said, "In any case, we're not gonna give 'em the chance. Right now, they don't know who any of you are; they don't even know Tuck has kids. We're gonna keep it that way. We'll take precautions to make sure they don't get anywhere near you."

Daniel was listening closely and he nodded, "right, makes sense. We can do that. We can be careful." He didn't look entirely convinced, but he started eating again, so Tuck relaxed a little.

"None of them are getting anywhere near you on my watch," Tuck summed up.

Daniel nodded, and after a few moments of silence, he said, "so you're a thief, hmm?"

Tuck snorted, "only if someone deserves it. Will and I were out on a date one night and these five little shits decided to be homophobic, calling us names and finally one of them pushed me. Will's on parole so he has to be careful, so he couldn't do anything unless they started it, but once they pushed me, he jumped in there and let them scuffle a bit. I played the scared old man. Will let them think they'd overpowered him and came away with every single one of their wallets. They were clearly country club kids with money to burn. So we took the cash and handed it out to the homeless in Times Square. It was a pretty good date!"

Daniel just shook his head, amused. "Uh, because you used to be really firm about bedtime rules and now I find out this!"

"Proper sleep is important!" Tuck winked.

Will snorted in amusement. He hadn't heard about that particular date, but he wasn't surprised. Pampered brats probably never knew what hit 'em.

God, it had been so long since he'd done a real job. Not since the one that had landed him in prison. None of the jobs after prison counted; they'd all been for profit, and he'd been... fuckfuckfuck don't touch that thought now, leave it alone.

"Rob from the rich, give to the poor. Don't say nothing in the code about bedtimes, sorry," Will smirked.
