Merc is here! It's a Portree heavy year (Neep matches upcoming!) so he takes every chance he can to watch them. But also he's hear to see what Ellie does after seeing the new standings. They're winning (and have the second best record in the league) yet to be out of the playoffs in one bloc of standings...he suspects Ellie will come back full force and wants to see what Portree does. But also wants to support his cousins.

So the whole family is there (and Georgi is invited since he's staying with them and might as well show the lad their big rival and how the UK style is played).

He gets really into the match, clapping and cheering loudly at how Portree bulldozes over their competition in the quaffle department. The Lorna injury definitely worries him, it's quite a direct hit but at least it isn't to the head.

By the end he's impressed and proud (even if they didn't get the snitch) and if he doesn't catch the MacFustys after the match to congratulate them, he'll find another time because this was well worth the tickets and time. What a show.

Maddock is there! And goes to sit with his coach (Yes this is two matches in a row, that's not strange). He is also curious to see what Ellie has up her sleeves. They'd been spending a lot of time together lately, and he knows that she's got plans to deal with the standings.

He was cheering, and very impressed by the show the Chasers put on. The injuries were brutal and he concerned about how Ellie is going to handle that.

Georgi was pleased to accept the invitation! He barely took his eyes off the pitch the whole time, familiarizing himself with what he's been told are Montrose's greatest rivals. He especially kept his sights on the Beater team (brother and sister, which impressed him a lot) and the Chasers. The numbers they put up were so exciting to him. Yay Chasers, go Chasers!

He's so used to tracking both Bludgers along with all the other activity on the pitch (seriously Beaters have to be ridiculous multitaskers, don't you think?) that he saw Lorna's hit coming and started out of his seat before she even fell, craning his neck to watch her go down. He cursed under his breath in Bulgarian, language that he is definitely not teaching the wee McGs; he could imagine how much a direct blow like that hurt, and wasn't surprised she didn't come back in after that.

He was a bit startled when Fofana took the Snitch with his team that far behind and the opposing team down two players; he'd expected the game to go on much longer with that big of a point differential and a 7-on-5 player advantage for the Wasps. At home a Seeker would never have taken the Snitch like that for fear of being hexed by angry fans/teammates/coaches, and he mentioned that to Merc on the way home.

(Luckily the little McGs are too distracted and distraught over Lorna going down to ask Georgi what these new words mean)

Merc smiles slightly, saying that he thinks the fans and team will leave the seeker hex-free if only because they took such a heavy beating with the quaffle that it was an embarrassing enough match for the Wasps. But admits that he wouldn't have caught it just yet himself. Captain beater and lead chaser down? You need to give it time. But...the Wasp chasers and keeper clearly weren't able to mount any defense or offense even with that advantage and it wasn't looking any better. He supposes at least this way they walk away with a respectable enough number of points to keep themselves afloat in the standings.

(Which will probably lead into a discussion of the structure of the BIL standings and his own opinions of how shit it is. Including pulling out the last standings to help explain with numbers and compare standings to win records (which he himself has written next to the prophet standings)).

As soon as the match was over, Maddock made some quick apologies to Coach, the McGs and Georgi as he literally ran off. He headed down to the pitch because after a match like this, despite the win, he's anticipating meltdown of epic proportions from Ellie. While she seemed fine on the pitch, Maddock went to cut her off before she got back to the locker room.

Merc just nods and says nothing. Maddock's personal life is his own private affair (even if it involves the other's team's coach and his cousin). Normally he'd tell Maddock to send his congrats along but he senses that's not why Maddock is rushing.

Georgi shook his head in agreement because that was about what he'd thought -- the European League counts wins (I think we established this during the discussion about changing the BIL ranking system?) and the idea of intentionally ending a game when you could play on and maybe win is foreign to him. (Viktor Krum's famous moment in 1994 was the exception rather than the rule and I feel like he was kind of reviled in Bulgaria for it for a while because wtf dude.)

He listened intently to Merc's discussion of the numbers of it all and had some comments to contribute; Georgi may be shy but he pays attention and he's clever. He agreed that the system is pretty terrible, but it is what it is, and he super wanted to talk about how that changes the whole-game and end-game strategies for various players, with lots of scribbling down numbers and gesturing emphatically. You got yourself a strategy nerd here, Coach.

Merc agrees with a lot of these changing strategies but points out that this is just for the regular season. When it hits the playoffs, it's back to classic tournament style. Winners win. Which is where some of the teams that focus just on getting numbers, win or lose, get tripped up.

As an example he uses the Bats, defending champions (no need to explain the messy politics of the last season just yet), top of the standings by a significant amount right now and riding high and yet...look at their record. 2-4-0. Is that the record of what should be the number one team in the league? He explains that this is because they knocked out the keeper one match and scored over 800 points. And even in their losses they walked away with 500 points more than once.

They're not a bad team, in fact they are very good, but when teams like this come up against teams that win...(here he points to the 5-0-0 record of the magpies. Undefeated so far tyvm) they fall. So at the end of the day, winning still matters. Merc is really just using this as an example to explain to Georgi his philosophy. Winning teams will win the cup. Not just high scorers. Win well and you will be comfortable enough in standings to slide into the playoffs (there are 8 spots and 13 teams, you have good chances) where this pays off. So he is not making you play to score, he is making you play to win. And see Georgi? Undefeated, second in standings with a bye week included. And once we get into the playoffs this will pay off.

MG is here to win Georgi. Welcome to the team that always aims for the Cup, and welcome to the team that wins it. Welcome to the most successful team in BIL history, the Montrose Magpies.
