Lennox has a mask of pure calm, but he's quiet and reserved while inside the team change rooms. Legs crossed on his bench, eyes closed, he's blocking everything out. He can't help but hope that the two matches on the bench, plus the unfair ejection, won't make the Kestrels see him as an easier target or think that he's rusty.

Hell, he hopes that isn't true for himself.

Merc is aware that much of the league is watching them this match. It's the last regular season match before the Neep and the Magpies have pulled off two stunning victories...that were also prime examples of snatching victory out of the jaws (or nearly stomachs) of defeat. But they did so at the cost of big injuries and some crazy plays, none of the clean dominance they're known for. Today he wants the Magpies to show up the league and press that they haven't lost a step.

And coming up against a well ranked Irish team after St. Patrick's day (who have taken big hits last bloc too) with most of the force of the Magpies starting lineup...Merc thinks they have a good chance at making it happen today. At least outwardly he projects that, inside he's got more nerves than he's willing to show. But he's a firm believer that the coach sets the tone for the team, so just be calm, confident, and professional.

The short pep talk today is similar to his journal entry and really he has a simple directive: Go out and dominate them.

When Irish teams have to play after St. Patrick's day, the whole team groans. Even if it's a week later and even if they're the Kenmare Kestrels. Because the team take their holiday seriously, and it takes them most of that week to even get back into training condition.

Aidan likes to lead by example and at least recovered from the hangovers earlier than the rest, but he's aware that they lost 2 starters in that Falcons match and are using overeager reserves against the number one team in the league.

Still, he's excited today. Jason might not be on the pitch (he'd hoped he would be but...that broom race clearly meant it wasn't going to happen) but this was his team. And more importantly, it's the match this season he's been looking forward to because Campbell has had a 7 snitch streak this season and his only miss was for being ejected. That hardly counted. Lynch may not be a seeker with much of an ego but the prospect of facing the best seeker of the season so far brings out even his competitive side and today he's raring to go.

Lex is focused today and looking more like her usual self. All the B.S. with her aunt has been funneled into quidditch and she's been a beast at training the past week. She knows they need to come out and dominate today and play clean because they can't afford ejections or injuries. Not with the neep around the corner.

She's in a good mood and ready to cheer up anyone who needs it

Maddock is here and he's READY FOR THIS! (Kind of). He's worried about maybe not being fully fit yet, but he has to play. Not because MG told him to but because MADDOCK needs to play. And he's been in training, and practicing, and flying, and avoiding bludgers, and he's all LET'S DO THIS! There is some dancing, and pumping up and probably some silent contemplation time too.

Georgi, who's been more quiet and less able to be cheerful than usual for over a week, is trying to keep his mind only on Quidditch. He comes into the locker room early to rewrap his bat handle, lace his new pink boots, and do his stretches to limber up, and greets everyone quietly as they come in.

As usual, he stands near match time and places his hand over his heart to sing the Bulgarian national anthem, but he doesn't get through more than the first line before his voice gets choked off at this reminder that he's going back to Malkograd tomorrow to face his parents, and at this point he's almost certain that he won't have a home in Bulgaria anymore after that. He can't get past that lump in his throat or the tears forming in his eyes, and he just stands there, stricken and silent.

Which is kind of a downer, I'm sorry, guys.

A foul roll call in the double digits, and Lennox could have sworn at least half of those were directed at him. It certainly felt like that, at any rate - and that's just the stuff the referee actually sees.

The snitch is a fast one - faster than he's seen all season, and he's hunting it down with his considerable nuance and skill... yet each time he gets close, something happens. Elbows here, a bludger to duck there, and he's sure at one point he feels a pull on his broom, but nothing is done. Most frustratingly, the little golden bastard disappears at least three times when it's within catching distance. He only hopes Lynch is as frustrated by it as he is.

When it comes to the final catch, he's not even in the same half of the pitch, such is he trying to duck and weave and avoid the seemingly constant bludgers from the Kestrel beaters. It appears a good fifty feet away from him, and he starts the chase, only to find a lucky bludger smacking into the handle of his broom, the first foot of it coming almost completely clean off. It's all he can do to control the thing, being some fifty feet in the air at the time, and needs the help of [volunteer] to get back down to the ground, where he just looks at the pieces in his hands, part stunned and part helpless. RIP, trusty old broomstick.

A snitch loss never feels good, but this one hurts.

Pre-Snitch
[info]neeples
2018-03-24 03:00 pm UTC (link)
While the teams wait for the starting whistle to blow, Aidan waves in the direction of the Montrose box (assuming Jason is in there), then snaps on his goggles and gives Lennox a friendly salute. Time for a real challenge!

------------

When Aidan thought 'overeager' reserves at the start of the match...he didn't really expect them to be THIS overzealous. His team is getting nowhere out there despite considerable effort at the hoops and fouls are being called left and right on the Kestrels. Aidan can't even say they're all unwarranted because well...some of them really are.

More than once he has to fly by Keel (especially) and Piazzolla to give them a quick look and reminder to reign it IN!

It does not help that he's trying to do this while flying against the top seeker in the league with a particularly frustrating snitch that keeps escaping them, and Montrose beaters coming for him. As the point difference widens and they have no chaser momentum and the chance of actually winning disappears...Aidan makes a decision. No trying to reign the team in and get them to get it together, the match is lost right now. But the snitch is not.

He adjusts his goggles, hardens his resolve. He didn't have anything to prove in the old matches but today he does. The rest of the match melts away as it now becomes solely a seeker vs. seeker battle to Lynch.

Lex plan for the Best Beater Brigade today is to dominate on the pitch and keep the Magpies injury free. It's an ambituous plan that requires her and Georgi to work flawlessly (drift compatible much?) but the Montrose beaters are on fire today. It's a slightly more defensive game / preventing the Kestrals from scoring instead of just trying to knock them all off their brooms. There's definitely a few times during the seven hour match that Lex tries to lure the Kestrals into fouls, trying to get one of them ejected or at least give Montrose any advantage they can get.

Angus goes into this match in particular with great determination, wanting to prove (to the world? to himself?) that he's not just going into the season's final matches and the Neep as a backup because Jason's injured. He goes hard right from the start, putting all his old standard tricks and some of the new ones the chaser team has developed out there and bombarding poor Aiden Kelly with shots. He has great faith in Lennox, of course, but also, that's Aiden Lynch and he's a legend, so just in case he is determined they're going to give Lennox a nice comfortable margin so they don't need a desperate save like LAST time.

His Quaffle-pocking foul comes three hours in, when he's been fouled three times in a row by Kestrels players and is frustrated enough to grab the Quaffle out of the air so hard it dents before chucking it straight at David Keel's little face (he ducks). The Quaffle-pocking foul is for the damage to the ball, which is fair enough, and he could probably have been called for Belligering as well for that attempted assassination-by-Quaffle, so he shuts his mouth on any protests.

Just an hour later, when he's already scored his double century and is about to start on his third, Wakefield slams a Bludger just an inch from his nose, which is startling and makes him drop suddenly, and then -- he hasn't had an episode while flying in such a long time, he almost doesn't recognize it -- everything starts to go still and grey around him, the crystals on his ear start to glow, and he starts to lean over on his broom.

There are three things on Maddock's mind today: score points, chaser interference and avoid bludgers. AND MADDOCK DID ALL THREE OF THESE THINGS. And didn't even get any fouls for it! Not even an incitement foul (Yesssss)! Also he is on POINT today with success of shots on goal. Though seriously, it helped that Kestrals were just not that on today. Not to say anything bad about the Kestrals because Maddock used to play for them too. But the FOULS! EVERY player fouled at least once. What is this? He's probably a bit more tired by the 6-7 hours mark than usual but he pushes it.

Ro was flying interference all match, trying to keep the Kestrels frustrated and the chasers from scoring. On the other hand he made sure to set up shots for Angus and Doc. Lots of passing. He did manage to get his century for Jason and toward the end of the match he even kicked a bludger for him too.

Truth is, Merc expected this to run a bit long. You don't pit two top seekers in the league against each other and not expect a real fight for that snitch. But in the seven hours before...well the team surprises even him. The Kestrels are in poor form, anyone can see that, but they're still a 7-3 team captained by a world cup winner. When he asked for domination...even he didn't expect this level of it. And he's so delighted and proud of his team out there that it's hard to wipe the smile off his face as the point difference widens.

Near the end he's just shaking his head with a smile that's almost disbelieving. 590-40. They are up 550 points against the Kenmare Kestrels. This is a better showing than he could've dreamed of to go into the Neep with and it puts him in an amazing mood. So when the final race for the snitch begins, he's no longer watching as coach, but just as a fellow seeker interested in seeing the big shots of the BIL compete for that golden prize.

Wow. The team really stepped up and dominated like Coach requested. After two crazy matches in a row, it was hard to know what to expect, but this was a welcome surprise. Well, no, not exactly a surprise, because they're the top-ranked team for a reason, but definitely a nice time for things to turn around at the end of the season.
