"I can't imagine David being so--sloppy." Bart's lip curled in annoyance. "They need to throw his arse off the pitch. They're all being sloppy over there. Maybe it was in the water because Lynch is usually a better player than that.

"I have to admit I worry about our head game sometimes, but not about that."

She didn't mean to laugh, but she did. "I'd say we've been through hell and we're working our way back." And Ellie knew had ownership for a lot of that, but they were strong despite all the change ups and issues. Chaos was an old friend and she knew it well, but she did (now more than before) worry about how that impacted the legacy aspect of the team.

"And it might not be top priority, but I'm not exactly keen to hand over the Golden Neep to Merc."

"Sometimes you can come through hell and be stronger for it. I don't think we're there yet and I'm not sure how to get there. But we field the team we have and not the team we want to have."

Bart didn't think some of the problems, like Meaghan and Ainsley, were solvable. But at least those two didn't have to be on the pitch together. Scrimmy and Pip were a bigger problem.

"I'm not going to hand it over either. But we have to come together to make it happen. Tell me what you think we ought to do to fire them up and get them on the same page for the Neep, Ellie."

Ellie before Vienna would have had an answer. The Ellie now? Well, she wasn't so sure what the team needed. Okay. But maybe sort aside the issues. The staff was one thing, what did her players need?

"We're splintered some. Lots of changes. And I don't think the respect is there. Not fully. And certainly more conditional. And sure. Attitude reflects leadership. So, that's on me." And for as much as she was trying, there was only so much she could do.

"I think we use our strengths, Lorna and Buchanan, yes. But also Maddie. Get them firing the team up." And Ainsley but she had other stuff on her plate. Not to mention that might also make things worse with Meaghan. Fuck. She hated to have that thought, but if McCormack didn't come around she might also be looking at an early than expected retirement.

"To get Maddie in position to lead in practice for the Neep, we have to play her," Bart pointed out, keeping his tone neutral. "But I think she's in good shape for that. I think we have concerns at the Keeper position, but ... not once we get on the pitch. Whoever we put out there will go on and do their job. It's a good thing we only play one at a time, though.

"I almost wish we could do another day at the preserve or something like that. Cooperative activities. We just don't have the time."

"Honestly? I'm more ready to play her than the moose." Not that she doubted Pip. More that Montrose would be expecting the Moose and it would be better to go against those expectations where they could. Ellie nodded to the keeper concerns. "At least we have a solid chaser set, beaters too."

"And the Reserve is always there if we think we can manage a day, switch thins up, or even have some great open water adventure on the boat."

"Boat's not a bad idea either. Make them do it without magic. Wonder whether Alasdair has the right kind of experience to lead them without me telling him how to handle the sails. Lorna doesn't, I don't think. Could be fun even if it goes wrong and as long as I'm there it's not like she'll sink.

"I promise not to keelhaul McCormack."

Ellie laughed. Now that would be a sight to see. Especially when she didn't have to be actually making the boat work.

"Aye, too much paperwork. Same issue with the dragons, but always good to have that possibility there."

"Also I think MacDougal might have a thing or three to say before we got to the paperwork," Bart added drily because he had enough distance now that he could, if not laugh at the whole situation, at least appreciate the humour in it. "I don't promise that nobody will end up in the water. Though usually that happens late in the game. Or after everyone has shared a whiskey or three."

"Well, let's just hope they can all swim half as well as they fly."
