IC/OOC - A&A Engagement Party, 17 March 2000
Who: Family, Friends, Furbabies, Teammates... oh, and probably Ada and Alasdair.
What: ENGAGEMENT PARTY
When: Saturday, 17 March 2000. Evening. backdated
Where: A&A's home on the outskirts of Dunvegan, Skye.
Warnings: Drinking. Language? (Hopefully not the latter)

On the Saturday between both of their team’s matches, Alasdair and Ada hosted their long awaited engagement party. Yes, it’s on St Patrick’s Day, and no, the best man isn’t there (he was in Sweden for the Annual Broom race), but this will be a fun and relaxed affair, with more than a hint of French class, courtesy of the bride. Held at their home on Skye, the party takes place through the property, from early evening and on into the night. Guests have the run of the house (within reason - the bedrooms are warded shut) but are reminded on arrival that the neighbours to the North, sheep farmers, are Muggles (so watch the spellwork while outside!).

Speaking of guests, around the house several members of the Buchanan and Olivier families can be found, including Alasdair’s father, Duncan (former Portree Beater and Captain) and his mother, Mary. Ada’s parents, Francois and Margaret are also circulating. Alasdair’s brother, Will - who is one of the other ushers - is right in the centre of the celebrations, and Ada’s brother (Christophe), sister and brother-in-law (Francoise and Marc) with their children (Lea and Alexandre) are also around somewhere. The couple’s elderly witch neighbour, Madam Simcox, has ventured up from her property to the south to attend but spends a lot of time sitting, chatting and talking about how these two need to make sure they’re eating properly. Similarly, the Buchanan-Olivier cats can be found lounging in the living room. Some of them like fusses and pets more than others. Have fun with that!

After everyone has arrived, and people have had time to mingle a bit, everyone gathers in the living room. Alasdair and Ada have a date to announce...

Florrie is sort of distantly acquainted with his family because All Quidditchers Know Each other and she's Merc's baby sister and ... did Duncan play a World Cup with Merc? They definitely worked together at DOMGAS. Anyhow she's delighted to get to know Alasdair better and has all sorts of flattering things to say about Ada. And clucking mother-hen noises about her injury.

Alasdair is pretty sure that Merc did indeed play a Cup with his father, given that the latter played on for about a million years, he jokes to her. He smiles at the praise of fiancée, because she IS marvellous, and promises that he's making sure she doesn't over-exert herself. The cats are even helping by frequently placing themselves on her lap, so she doesn't dare move...

Florrie approves of this plan as a way of keeping Ada in place. And is sure that Alasdair is helping her keep up with everything. (She'll take any questions he has though she's off duty. Florrie, Alasdair may have figured out, is never entirely off duty, and in that way is somewhat like her Aunt.)

While she's not asking for any secrets, Florrie is interested in hearing what it's like to work with Lorna as a professional. Florrie flew as a Chaser with Lorna in school but of course that was a very long time ago. (Alasdair may not have thought until now about the family relationship but "blah blah blah my cousin Lorna and I blah blah blah" comes up in this context if he hasn't.)

Alasdair is certainly making sure that nothing stops her from doing what she should be, according to her treatment plan, because he's been there. He tells Florrie that Ada was doing this for him back when he had his last serious injury, in their Quiberon days, so really they're used to it by now. It's just a question of the tables being turned.

Alasdair smiles at the mention of Lorna. "I won't lie, it was a bit of a mind melter at first. She was my dad's last professional beater partner, ye know?"

Ah, then he knows the drill and Florrie feels no need to say more.

"I hadn't thought of that but that's right, isn't it? And here she is, back from retirement with her two bairns and planning on taking the World Cup by storm again if I know my Lorna. Now I feel quite ancient; she's my elder by less than a week!" Florrie laughs because she doesn't think of herself as quite old enough to have played alongside legends like Duncan Buchanan, but apparently she'd've been wrong about it.

One of the Quiberon players, a fluent English speaker due to having a Canadian mother, used to teasingly call him the Sensible Scot. It kind of stuck, he says, but thank goodness most people here ARE Scottish because it really would be a silly nickname.

He grins as she recalls her family connections and speculates - probably correctly, Alasdair assumes - about her cousin's future. It certainly sounded like the Lorna he knew. "Well, at least she can take a joke and didn't murder me when I reminded her I hadn't even started Hogwarts when she started playing. Meant me and Will," he nodded over to his brother at that point, "spent days and days hanging around Portree. If they played on a Saturday or Sunday that'd be the whole weekend sorted. Surprised they didn't put up camp beds for us, actually," he chuckles.
