Cecil?!?, no, no, not Cecil?!? Cecil would never say dick [...] probably not shit either. Would he?! How can this be happening? Am I hallucinating? I should probably say something. How long have I been staring? Oh, Rowena this is embarrassing.

"I called him a pric pwdin."

For a moment, Alex wonders if he's overstepped with his candor. The way the guy is staring at him, he feels like maybe he's just grown an extra head or something. He's just about to apologize when the other man finally speaks.

He lets the confusion show on his face. "I... don't know what that means," he admits, and then he offers the other wizard a smirk, "but I'm sure he deserved it."

Managing to pull himself together -just- Roger smiles in response to the smirk. "It translates as pudding prick in English," Ro shrugged, "he definitely deserves it."

The Chaser can't keep his eyes off the man before him, attention completely stolen from the match for the time being. It was astonishing how much this newcomer looked like Cecil.

Offering a hand, he introduced himself properly, finally remembering his manners. "Roger Davies. Nice to meet you..."

The invective translation startles a genuine laugh out of Alex. "I'm not even going to try to wrap my mouth around that one." A tiny pause as his brain registers what he'd said. Yup, this is the reality in which that had happened. Well, damn. Whatever- better to just commit at this point. Deadpan: "Best to leave that to you."

He studies the game beyond the box for a moment, but definitely notices the way he's being stared at, even starting to get a little wary of it. Alex takes the hand, however, without missing a beat- Davies, right, he'd read up about him a bit, mostly stats. Having only seen him out on the pitch, it would have been next to impossible to connect the name to the face immediately. His handshake is firm, but not overpowering; he's not there to prove anything at this point. "Pleasure's mine. Alex Winters." He nodded toward the game. "You were great out there before, well, y'know."

Both eyebrows shot up at the choice of phrase and a playful smirk curved the corners of his lips. "Yes, I think you'd better had."

Undoubtedly he was making the other wizard uncomfortable with his staring, and he knew he should stop. But it was quite an effort to turn his attention back to the pitch. Once he had, however, he felt a lot less like a startled rabbit.

His own handshake was carefully firm, and he smiled as he was given a name. Alex Winters. Winters, that was quite close to Winterberry. Again he felt slightly flustered as his brain started making connections that likely didn't exist, however he managed to attribute this to the compliment, ducking his head slightly and glancing back to the pitch before looking at Alex again.

"Thanks, I try my best." A slight pause, "so what brings you to our box?"

Roger's smirk elicits a grin from Alex. Are they flirting? Could be. The guy was pretty cute. However, was it the wisest course of action to fall into bed with one of the players he might be representing? fuckwudgie

Might be best to skip that briar patch entirely. Shame.

Except there was that staring again, and it was already starting to wear down his hastily constructed defenses. Alex knew his own gaze was starting to linger, heard the alarm bells clanging in his head: abort! abort! abort!

And then the sweet relief of cold hard reality. Business. He could do business. Business was safe and good. "I'm putting my hat in the ring for the PR position. Thought I'd come to a game and see you guys play. This is your first year with the team, right? How are you liking it?"

Wait. Now he wasn't the only one who's focus was a little too fixed. Obviously he had completely unnerved Alex and the poor man was keeping an eye on him lest he do something crazy.

The American accent threw him a little, as he kept expecting to hear Cecil's voice. I need to tell Ainsley about this...

"Oh I see, so we could be welcoming you into the Magpie family sooner or later." Roger's smile was polite, as the conversation settled into a neutral ground. He could talk about the team and Quidditch, that was safe. "My rookie season as a Magpie was going well, until today. It's my first ever ejection. I was with Ballycastle before ... and after. Coach rescued me from their reserves bench and brought me to Montrose. Feels like home now."

Alex shrugged a shoulder. He was honestly a little relieved when the other wizard's face shifted into something he could handle a bit more adroitly. "Could be, if the universe decides it likes me enough. From what I've picked up so far, you guys have a great team. It'd be awesome to be a part of it." He fixed Roger with an almost daring look. "Unless there's some super secret scandal that I'm better off not knowing about. Any skeletons in your closet that I should or shouldn't know about?"

He listened as Roger went on; that all tracked with what he'd read about the Chaser, though he got a little confused by: "...before?" but then he got there, and his face fell a little. "Ah, yes, right. Sorry." Alex waved a dismissive hand toward the pitch, and shook his head. "I wouldn't worry about that ejection, really. Like I said, it was a shit call, and I think most people would agree if they'd been paying the slightest bit of attention to the plays."

He was about to say more when he felt something bump against his leg. Immediately afterward, a cold, wet sensation nudged his fingers. Alex glanced down, startled, and then grinned and crouched low and held out his hand. "Hello! Who's this?"

"Hopefully the Universe decides to play nice," Roger's smile didn't falter even as an anxious feeling swept over him at the joking question. He didn't know whether sleeping with his Coach's Brother-in-Law counted as a skeleton or not. "Hmmm nope, just boots."

He was about to qualify his statement when Alex's expression changed, so instead he just nodded. While his own experience of the war wasn't as bad as others', he still wasn't overly keen on talking about it. "I'll try not to worry about it. But sometimes my brain doesn't let me."

Watching as Alex crouched down to greet his pup, Ro smiled, "that would be Waffle. I'm his human. Did anyone warn you about the Montrose Pack? You'll need to learn their names too." Waffle's tail was wagging a mile a minute as he greeted this new human, flopping onto his side for a belly rub.

A brow inclined at the mention of footwear, but Alex merely filed that bit away, just like the non-reaction to the brief allusion to the war. Any additional reassurances he could have given Roger probably would have sounded hollow coming from a relative stranger, so he tabled them for now and focused on giving the puppy his undivided attention.

"Waffle? It's not short for quaffle, is it?" He glanced up at Roger with a teasing smile. "I did notice a rather disproportionate number of four legs around the box. The Unbeatable Montrose Menagerie- has a nice ring to it. I can work with that."

Roger's attention went back to the game for a moment as his pup charmed Alex. The little collie was in his element as the other man gave him all the fusses he could wish for.

"Actually, yes. I was told Quaffle was a little on the nose, plus Waffles are delicious." Roger smiled as the pup let out a little bark at his name being mentioned. "Use the animals for PR? Impressive. The chocolate lab is Toby, Lennox is his Magpie, Mandela, the Jack Russel, keeps Jason in line and Champ, who isn't in the box at the moment, is Maddock's partner in crime."

Alex let out a genuine laugh, tickled by Roger's admission. "Can't fault you there- they are delicious." He scratched the puppy behind the ear, getting a slobbery lick to the side of his wrist for his consideration. Alex chuckled again, but made no move to wipe it clean just yet.

He filed away the names and corresponding dogs- that he could see, at least- with a small nod. "Gotta use everything in your arsenal, right? It's a different...breed, if you'll excuse the ongoing metaphor, that isn't even a little charmed by Quidditch players and their pets."

He gave Waffle another long pet and then rose to his feet again. "Speaking of charming, I really need to see if I can find your manager out there. It was a genuine pleasure to meet you, Roger. Hopefully we'll see each other again in the near future."
