Were they ejecting his SEEKER?! HIS BLOODY SEEKER?! ARE YOU INSANE REF?! An absolutely livid Merc apparates down to the pitch to argue with the ref over this ridiculous call. Foul the lad but EJECTION?!

There's a pause in things as the Montrose Coach and the ref get heated and when it's clear the ref will not budge, Merc (still angry) throws up his hands and frantically signals Micah to call a timeout. They need to break up this awful momentum and regroup/restrategize. Even if it's only for 3minutes.

When the remaining team lands (merlin, he has 4 players and almost zero offensive capabilities), Merc looks grim with his hands on his hips, lost in thought as his mind goes a mile a minute trying to think of a plan for this. They have over the 160 point difference. Normally they could end it here with the snitch but...

Gregor also joins the confab, in case he can help.

"Are there grounds for an appeal?"

"Can we force them to snitchnip?"

"Or I hate to say this, but we could take out Sacharissa. If neither team has a seeker, then the game has to be called off."

Georgi glances around at his teammates. It's obvious that Coach is madder than a tickled dragon about Lennox's ejection and not thinking of the right rule to call on at the moment, and no one else looks like they're about to volunteer it, so he puts his hand up. "The seeker promotion rule," he says clearly, still calm despite the situation. "It's rare to use, but it's allowed. When the seeker is out of play another player can give up his position and promote to seeker." He looks at Merc, his grip tight on his bat because he really doesn't want to give it up, but... "Coach? I can do this."

While Coach stands there, that grim look on his face, hands on hips, and lost in thought, it's not clear if he's even listening. That is until Georgi speaks up and his head snaps in the Bulgarian beater's direction, just staring for a moment.

Nobody in the BIL had used that rule in...merlin knows how long. It certainly hadn't been used even once in his years playing, nor in his years before, or in the years since actually...just one of those rules in the book that was an interesting eccentricity but never really seen in play.

Without even addressing Georgi, Merc suddenly spins on the man in the giant Magpie costume. "Gregor! You have 2 minutes, get me the rulebook, we'll need to argue this in." Then he turns back to Georgi, mind still going a mile a minute as he surveys him then looks at the rest of his team. All...3 other players.

Beater is the only position he has two of, and it's the only position he can afford to give up right now. Jason might be faster but he's needed with the quaffle. Micah is their wall. And Lex is their lead beater. Georgi is right, he's the only choice for this. "New plan team!"

Gregor whips his magpie head off. "You can do--"

He stops. He has orders from the coach. He knows exactly where in the Magpie's practice offices the "Official and Published Rules of the Sport of Quidditch, 1999-2000 edition" are located, and he think he remembers this rule.

"I'll get the book, but you probably need a good lawyer."

Gregor disapparates. Since his costume is not actually his clothes, he leaves it behind, and the now-empty Left Magpie outfit, falls in a heap on the pitch.

The referee is looking at Merc, still annoyed at the name-calling and waiting for him to get his team back in the air.

Georgi takes the opportunity of a minute's rest to stretch his arms, shaking out his hands one at a time from the death grip he had on his bat, and look to the rest of the team to see how they're taking this unexpected shift in strategy.

Merc tries not to glare back at the ref and turns back to his team and beckons them into a close huddle. He has just over 2minutes here.

"The new plan: Georgi gives up his bat to be our temporary seeker. We double down on our point difference, this is going to be defense like you've never had to play it."

Then he turns to each of his remaining 4 players in turn.

"Georgi...let me be clear right now, lad. I don't expect you to catch the snitch. I expect you to put enough pressure on their seeker that she thinks and fears you will. By putting you in we'll make that snitch a point of pride for her. And let me tell you that there isn't a seeker out there that is willing to take the chance that an amateur seeker is going to outrace them for the snitch. Be a threat they can't ignore and force their hand."

"Lex. You're working overtime here, defend the hoops and take no prisoners until that snitch makes an appearance. When it does...force James to make that catch. Do whatever you need to to make it look like Georgi might."

"Micah and Jason: Defence defence defence. Micah, I need you to be a Wall. Nothing gets through you. Nothing. We have 4 goals of leeway here and that's it. Jason, you've done the work. We have our point difference, now let's keep it. Take possession of that quaffle however you can and hold onto it. We need time, we need possession minutes, and we need that point difference to stay."

"Fly or die time, team. They think they have the victory in the bag. Show them that Montrose doesn't go down without a fight. Show them that putting us three down doesn't come without repercussions. And show them why we are undefeated."

"Montrose on three!"

Jason has played the last block between Maddock and Lennox on adrenaline and fury. His shoulder is a disaster of pain right now, but he has been doing his best to not let that show. That matters more now. Jason threw down. He needs United to believe he can keep doing that all day.

He nods along to Coach’s plan. They got this.

Jason puts his left hand in. He is past a point of politeness by now. The moment calls for an appropriate response of “Caw, caw, motherfucker!"

Gregor apparates back to the pitch, arriving just outside the huddle, dripping with sweat and wearing a pair of bicycle shorts. He doesn't seem to notice the cold. Gregor is carrying a copy of The Official and Published Rules of the Sport of Quidditch, 1999-2000 edition, and it's open to a page near the back... [OOC: Now you know what a scots mascot wears under his kilt. It probably doesn't win first prize...]

"Found it. Here, this is the rule..."
117a: Howsoever, if the Seekr be ejected for sundry fouls not related to moral turpitude, a team may nominate from amongst the remaining players a replacement seekr, for otherwise an ejection would be dire as a forfeit.

117b: The promoted player will, at the resumption of the play session, approach the referee and say unto him, "I am the promoted seeker." If the player has non-seeker equipment, such as a beater's bat, she shall hand it to the referee, who shall transfer it to the team for safekeeping.

117c: If the promoted seker be ejected forthwith, only then may the rule be invoked a subsequent time.

Georgi peers around Gregor to look at the rulebook just to be sure he knows exactly what to do. He nods to everyone in the circle, his game face firmly on. "I understand, Coach," he tells Merc. "I'll do everything I can do to end the match quick. And if I catch it, this match will be making history."

He pats Lex on the shoulder encouragingly as they break huddle, and swings onto his broom and makes his way directly over to the ref to do some rules lawyering and hand in his bat.

Lexi is not keen to lose Georgi, but she just nods.

She's played 4 v 7 before, but never without a seeker. Micah is on fire though and she finds a moment to squeeze his hand. She's not sure about this, but there's no time for wavering here.

Montrose forever.

"Mel or Fraser would know for certain," she offers as he mind runs through the possibility of using that rule and coming up with what she things are the best ways to reorganize the team with this.

timeout - medic check in
[info]feelingyou
2018-02-24 06:50 pm UTC (link)
As the rest of the team works out their strategy, Jason tries to flag Florrie down. He knows she must be busy with Maddock. He hadn't seen the whole thing, but from the aftermath it was bad. Jason doesn't even know if Maddock is still in the med tent or on his way to Mungo's. And honestly? He doesn't have much time to borrow that worry. He needs to keep his head in the game.

And he's rapidly burning through is adrenaline.

Right now they have a few minutes. He is pretty sure his clavicle is fractured, but he is the last chaser standing. Logic might have him sit out, but he is hoping for some quick first aid that might be able to get him through the rest of the match.

Hopefully Florrie will agree.

Since Maddock and Pye are already off to Mungo's, Florrie has had her full attention on the match and can come out to help Jason. She does a quick spell to see if anything is broken; she doesn't have time to give him paste because he'd have to get halfway out of his clothes so she could apply it.

The best she can offer him is a spell-brace to support the shoulder and not make it worse, which she constructs under the watchtul eye of the referee. She'd offer him a pain potion but under the circumstances the best she can do is numb it by spell. That's a buy now, pay later proposition so she leaves it to Jason to decide while she's constructing the brace.

Jason is fine with the brace, really anything to take away some of the bite and remind him not to use his arm is good enough for him. He knows he'll be paying for this later.

"Hey, I'm sure we could still win this with one hand tied behind my back." He tries to joke about it because the levity is better than sinking into the reality of the tight spot they are in. Jason is interested to hear how Coach is going to turn this one around.

Florrie is too busy patching him up in the limited time allotted to them to pay too much attention to the joke, but she does smile at the joke. It's a bit of an effort, but she's trying.

Once she's got the shoulder braced so he's not making it worse, she does something to the bruise that draws out some of the pain. "It'll hurt more later. Sorry. When the match is over, you come straight to the tent. No tiara posing until after I've had at that shoulder. Now go give them hell for Ro and Len and Doc."

She leans in and gives him a big kiss on the cheek.

SEEKER MADNESS
[info]bestbeloved
2018-02-24 06:44 pm UTC (link)
So now Georgi is a seeker, which is not something he ever planned to be in his life, but never let it be said he doesn't do his duty even if it isn't something he'd choose for himself. *sad trombone*

He is on Sacharissa with an expression of intense and scary determination on his face, flying faster than he normally would to keep up with the smaller and lighter seeker. His one and only goal is to not let her ignore the Snitch in order to run up the score, and to force her to catch it with the points buffer intact. Doing all this while also dodging the other team who outnumbers his side almost by half is tiring, but he is not a guy who will slack of while it's physically possible for him to keep flying, so despite everything Puddlemere throws at him to try to get him off Sacharissa's bristles, he sticks to her like a persistent thistle.

He spots the Snitch, low on the pitch below Micah's hoops, at the same moment Sacharissa does and drops like a stone to fly flat out and race for it before Puddlemere can throw all their tricks at him to make him back off. She outraces him, but not by much, and grabs it to end the match with a loss.

Georgi only barely manages to correct his flightpath to avoid a crash into either Sacharissa or the goalposts, and he stumbles off his broom a little bit dazed that he actually did it.

Gregor hasn't put his mascot costume back on, and has been with Merc helping relay what info he can to the remains of the team, but when Georgi starts his race and forces United to catch the snitch for a loss, Gregor bursts out the full-on Bulgarian National Anthem on bagpipes. It's almost overwhelmed by the roar from the crowd.

Georgi, who is half high on adrenaline and half stunned that Sacharissa actually took the Snitch like he was trying to make her do, catches the last half of the anthem and automatically puts his hand on his heart right there on the field.

Re: The Match: second ejection to final whistle
[info]oliver_wood
2018-02-24 06:54 pm UTC (link)
Oliver is not surprised in the least when Montrose calls for a timeout. He's grateful for the respite himself, short as it is, and he flies down to join his team on the ground for a quick discussion. James is looking rather gleeful about the call, but Hawksworth is quick to reminder her that this is a Chaser game right now.

Chaser and Keeper. Everyone looks at Oliver. He grimly looks down at his hand, and the others' gazes follow.

"They'll have to forfeit!" James says, looking around at them like they're crazy. "You can't win without a Seeker."

Coach Blatcher shakes his head slowly. "If I know McGonagall at all, he's going to find a way to turn this around on us. Draw fouls, force a Snitchnip, anything to keep from forfeiting." A glance at the Montrose huddle confirms that something intense is being discussed. "Chasers, press Savage with all you've got. Beaters, your sole job is to keep those Bludgers off our Chasers." With a rather rueful expression, he says to Oliver, "I'm afraid that's going to leave you on your own for the short run. One on one with King. Think you can handle it?"

Oliver nods. "I can handle it." He really isn't sure he can, but if determination could win it for them, Oliver's got that.

"One last thing," Coach says. "James—keep your hands away from that bloody Snitch until I or Hawksworth give the signal, got it? But if you see it, keep on it. We want to close this out as soon as we've made up the points gap."

She nods, though it's obvious she still doesn't think Montrose has a chance in hell at winning this.

It's only another minute later that Oliver sees James's mouth drop open, just like he knows his own is doing. They're putting a Beater in as the Seeker? Oliver knows the rule, because he's read the rulebook a hundred times through, at least, but no one actually does it.

Getting back into the game, it's clear that the Montrose strategy is not going to allow them to get the points advantage they need to win. Oliver keeps the goals defended successfully, but he's not arrogant enough to think that's entirely his own skill. He's not giving them shots, but it's clear that Montrose is simply keeping the Quaffle away from Puddlemere, rather than actually attempting to score.

Oliver sees the look on Hawksworth's face when he gets the signal from Blatcher. Oliver sighs, partly in resignation and partly in relief. If they can take the Snitch now, it'll be a loss—but at least it won't be much of one. Better that than let Montrose take another couple of hundred points in the rankings. That signal comes none too soon, too, because James and Draganov are soon racing for the Snitch, and for an awful moment, Oliver thinks Montrose might actually get it.

But, for all her attitude, James is a good Seeker, and she at least proves she's not going to be taken down by some Bulgarian giant Beater in disguise. And that's that.

Thank Merlin.

Jason's game is to maintain the point differential. He will 100% do his part and let Micah run his side. His fetch and keep away game are solid, but he is a one man chaser set out there. Georgie is busy with the snitch and Lex is keeping the bludgers off him.

He is flying like he did earlier, the biggest noticeable difference is that he is shooting left handed now. He makes none of those 11 shots, but he wasn't hoping to score at this point. Although it would have been cool if he did. One or two of them come pretty close, enough to let Oliver know he is still in this. Montrose is not just going to roll over.

Unfortunately, his general existence appears to be an insult to the referee who at this point surely is just looking for a reason to eject him from the game. During one of his longer runs of keep away from United he gets called for Befouling. Jason thinks that is an absolute bullshit call, but says nothing and simply tosses the quaffle back to the ref so United can take their penalty shot. He is not worried. He is going to get that quaffle back.

Although he would really like for someone to catch the snitch soon. And he is quite pleased when he notices that race for the snitch occurring. Wouldn't it be something for Georgi to catch it?
