Something I didn't miss about overnight shifts at St. Mungo's: the wee hours waiting game. Well, I did a bit, but Someone, please, entertain me. I've read the reference books here enough to recite them in my sleep. My partner is a drip and a half, and

AINSLEY GALBRAITH:

I'm living vicariously through you, so please, spill.
ALEC URQUHART:

[Each bullet is written in a separate ward so Alec's fancy charm to notify him of wards goes off multiple times. 23 times, to be exact. Strikeouts are cosmetic only, and the text beneath them readable.]
  • Dear Master Urquhart,

  • It was a pleasure to see you at the Macmillain Ranch earlier this week.
  • Conversing with you was a singular experience, as always.
  • Thank you so much for relieving me of my firewhiskey; it was weighing my bag down rather a lot.
  • I've been told that it's unladylike to be drinking hard liquors, but how else is a young woman such as myself expected to lure men into her grasp find a dance companion in this day and age?
  • On that note, thank you also for the dance. It was such a welcome surprise when you didn't mangle my feet like my peers warned me you would.
  • Won't they be surprised!

  • I'm sorry, we don't have much paper up here in the mountains where we don't have many trees.
  • I'm rather ashamed to say, but I find I must use each piece of paper for a dual purpose.
  • Please excuse this break in propriety while I record my shopping list for my elderly house elf, Geraldina.

  • Eggs (12)
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Bell pepper (2)
  • Gym socks
  • New sweater?
  • Souls of the innocent
  • Dish towel

  • I do hope we can find time to meet again.

  • Best wishes,
  • The Lady Maighread MacDougal, esq.

  • P.S. Fuck you.

  • P.P.S. Merry Christmas.

  • P.P.P.S. But still, fuck you.

PEGGY URQUHART: [added after dumb Alec's dumb owl]
I didn't know Circe was there and I didn't know they were going to print it.

I met his parents, so that's a thing that happened to me. I know it was just because of the party, but still. Can I live vicariously through you instead? Even with the fog horn thing?

Yes, I absolutely heard that. Is something wrong with your journal?

Was. There was something wrong with my journal. Living this life is currently more mortifying than exc

I DON'T KNOW Yes? I'm assuming? I'm...not great at these sorts of things. Maggie, I met his parents, and I was not remotely ready, and I don't know what to do with this information.

I am also going to assume that your journal thing had something to do with the Circe article.

[...] Did you insult them?

You're a regular Poirot.

Not to the best of my recollection. I'm pretty sure I said some words, maybe a couple of verbs. Also, fairly certain that I didn't say fuck or Godricdammit, so that's a good thing, I think?

Prefer Sherlock more, honestly, or Miss Marple. Could never pull off the Poirot mustache. How that fallout going?

When's the wedding, then?

I've never read any of them but I fancied his hat. How do you think it's going? My purse provided accompaniment for the Macmillain party. That was the tail end of 24 hours of the same. I may kill Alec Urquhart, I haven't decided yet.

You're hysterical.

No, really. You should just go ahead and check yourself in, since you're right there. Dead convenient place to have a breakdown.

Just for that, I'll be sending Alec Urquhart a muffin basket.

Aye, I'm aware.

We're encouraging him now? Is there no justice in the world?

Revenge is a dish best served with lovingly made baked goods.

Isn't that how the saying goes? No? Just in my house?

No wonder I've been getting odd looks all these years.

If you ever visit my folks, and you don't eat the baking, you will be hexed.

And not even by me. My dad's all right, but my mum... she doesn't do it often, but let me tell you, you do not want to miss out on Claret Galbraith's baked goods without running the risk of facing her very real, very terrifying wrath.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be next on the list of Unforgivables, just you wait.
