Party thread!
-Who: Everyone!
-What: Party time!
-When: Day 27, from 5 in the morning carrying on until 5 am the next day when everything will get cleaned up by the golems
-Where: Ballroom, club, bar, places around there
-Status: Complete
-Rating: Who knows! Could go from anywhere between G and R!

If one were to walk into the ballroom after 5 am, they would find brightly colored streamers hanging across the walls and from the ceiling. Confetti was constantly fluttering down from the ceiling, as if the tiny pieces were snow themselves. Tables had been set up along the wall with plates, silverware, and all sorts of food imaginable. The Planet had made sure to include everyone's favorite food on the menu. The dessert table was huge. There was also a drink table nearby, complete with a bar and a few golems manning it to monitor the intake of drinks as well as serve them up. The Planet seemed to be either apologizing for all the people missing or wanting the remaining people to get together and meet each other again.... or perhaps it was a little bit of both.

Marcus felt great sympathy for the young woman, for Yuna. He knew exactly how she was feeling. After a month, he still felt like the Shadows were about to destroy the galaxy unless he returned to help defeat them. When Yuna performed her elaborate bow, Marcus didn't try to imitate it. He simply bowed back in his own fashion. He had spent enough time interacting with alien cultures to know that it was often unwise to attempt to copy their customs.

"Yuna. I'm very pleased to meet you, and let me say that I know how you feel, and so do many others here. I was abducted from the middle of an interstellar war of no small importance, and I would dearly love to "get back to work", as it were. I can't say that none of your friends will show up, because some people have been lucky that way, but no one I knew in my previous life has come here."

Marcus wondered how the girl was taking all this information. It could be hard to take, and different people responded to it differently. He was glad she appeared to be motivated to take action. A lot of people stayed in their room for a couple of days before accepting things and coming out to participate.

Yuna wasn't the sort of person to sit back and let things happen around her. She would do her best to shape them with a sort of quiet determination. She could see no point in sitting around moping about what had happened, not if there was any chance that she could help fix it. It was just how she was.

"Yes, Marcus, it is good to meet you." She listened to what he had to say with a very intent look on her face, like she was hearing a very important message that must not be misinterpreted. "A war, how terrible. You must miss your friends horribly."

She was fairly calm in her tone and appearance, but her muscles were all tensed. She was ready for whatever happened. What she would really like more than anything was to fight something, perhaps the Planet, and make it send her home. She didn't really know how practical that was, however, and she didn't know if there were any Fayth here to enlist the help of. "Um... this may seem like an odd question, but are there... any temples here?"

Marcus found Yuna's manner very pleasant. He found it telling, however, that for all her politeness and deference, she seemed very determined. She clearly had an inner strength that she liked to stay quiet about.

"Well, it's not my friends, so much, it's more the chance to contribute that I miss. I wouldn't say I had a lot of friends where I came from, more co-workers and acquaintances, but we were all joined in a common fight, a good fight."

Marcus felt that Yuna understood what he was saying. It sounded like she had come from a similar situation, well, except for the part about having friends.

"You know, that's a very interesting question. There are a lot of amenities here. There are several eating establishments, various recreational opportunities, but I've never seen a space desgnated for prayer, meditation, or ritual purposes. I would have to say, no. I don't think there is a temple here."

As always, Yuna listened politely to everything that was said to her. She nodded to say that she understood what he was saying. She didn't completely get it, since she'd had very close friends almost from the time she was born, but she did understand feeling a bit separated from those around her.

"I see." She focused on him, one eye emerald-green and the other sapphire-blue. "It is the good fight that is important, I would say. But you must miss these people, since you all fought together. That makes a bond, in my experience."

Once more, she listened, but this time she paid very close attention. This response was one that she was particularly interested in. Temples were very important to those on Spira. His answer had her shaking her head.

"But... how can you exist without..." And then, once more, the ugly truth about Yevon reared it's head. She sighed softly. "Then there are no Fayth to appeal to for help. I wonder if I would be able to fight and defeat the Planet with just the aeons I have already."

Marcus found he was enjoying this conversation very much, which was sort of odd, since it had a distinctly melancholy tinge to it. Nevertheless, Yuna was a mature and polite young woman, and an attentive conversationalist. Despite or because of her evident sorrow, he sensed that she was going to make an effective addition to the population of Mirage, or, at least, that faction of the population that wanted to escape.

"Yes, it does make a bond, only the thing is I had only been at my new post for a couple of weeks when I was abducted, so I hadn't really had a chance to bond or make friends with my new associates."

He listened carefully to her statements in response to the lack of temples. It was sometimes a challenge to decipher the language of people from different cultures. Not because they spoke another language, but because their assumptions of obviousness often led them to casually make comments that made no sense to people outside their culture.

"I'm sorry. I don't mean to be rude, but what are Fayth, and aeons?"

She was instantly horrified by her lapse in politeness. She was still fully grasping the situation, but in her mind, that was no excuse for being rude. She bowed quickly to add to her apology. "I'm sorry, I forgot."

She paused for a moment before continuing on. "I am still having a hard time believing I am not on Spira, but no one from my world would ask a question like that. Please forgive me."

The easiest way to demonstrate what an aeon was would be to summon one, but this was a party. It wasn't at all appropriate to do that here. So she settled on trying to explain, instead. "It would really be better if I showed you, but an aeon is a creature that summoners can call to do their bidding. They protect the summoner on their journey."

She wasn't at all sure she was explaining anything, but she forged on. "The temples in Spira house the Fayth, and the summoner must go to all the temples and obtain the blessing of the Fayth. Then, we may summon the aeon associated with that temple at will." Anxious now, she looked at him, wondering if she was making any sense at all.

Marcus was surprised at Yuna's reaction to his question. He didn't think there was anything to be sorry about, but the way she reacted it was like she had accidentally insulted his dead grandmother. It was one thing to be conscientious, but she seemed very sensitive about her behaviour. He wondered what kind of an upbringing she had had.

"Nothing to forgive, Yuna. I don't blame you for forgetting. You've only just arrived after all, haven't you? Let me see if I understand what you're saying. So you are a summoner, and you have gained the power to summon aeons by visiting various temples and obtaining the blessing of the Fayth that live there."

Marcus had a lot of questions about exactly how all of that worked, but some questions, like whether the fayth were just idols, he decided to keep to himself. It wasn't exactly polite to question someone's faith unnecessarily.

"So, what kind of creatures are these aeons? Do they come from far away when you call them, or do they just magically appear? Will you be able to summon them here on Mirage despite the lack of temples?"

Relieved, she nodded, and even smiled at him. "Thank you." She was quite glad that he hadn't taken offense to her thoughtlessness. "Yes, I am new here. It is quite different here, I have never seen buildings as big as these." She paused and thought about that for a moment. "Except for the blitzball stadium, of course."

A golem wandered by, and Yuna accepted a drink from it. Ever polite, even to men who appeared to be made out of stone, she bowed to the creature. "Thank you." She took a sip and nodded. Not bad, some sort of fruit juice that she'd never tasted before.

"Yes, I am a summoner. I travelled the world, seeking the blessing of the various fayth. Once I had them all, I was to perform the Final Summoning, which would bring an end to Sin and bring the Calm. Only..." She hesitated for a moment. "It didn't work quite that way..."

After a moment of thought, she hesistantly spoke again. "I could... show you my aeons. I hadn't thought about if I could summon them here, but Valefor followed me in. I hope I can, or I stand no chance of defeating the Planet."

Interesting. It seemed she was already determined to fight the Planet. She already saw it as her enemy. Marcus saw it as a creature whose will was in opposition to his own, but he wasn't sure fighting it was the best option. It was, after all, a lot more powerful than any of them. Of course, he didn't really know anything about the extent of Yuna's power.

"I would love to witness a summoning some time. I'm not sure that here, in this party, is the best place. Maybe outside."

He had to admit that he was fascinated by the mythic dimension her prior life had. She was to bring an end to sin? Sounded a lot like a certain someone else he could think of. Still, he had clearly been right about her being a person of some consequence in her homeland. Surely not everyone there had the power to perform the 'final summoning'.

"Did I hear you say 'blitzball'? May I ask, is that a sport? I've never heard of it. How is it played?"

The conversation had gotten a bit heavy for a party, the Ranger thought. For all of his intent to escape, he didn't feel like now was the time to plan an offensive against their plenipotent captor.

"No, there is not enough space here. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone." She agreed fully with his estimation of the situation. A summoning took up enough room, even just with her spinning her staff around. What with the Aeon appearing suddenly, she thought that it might cause a panic. Imagine Anima being summoned... no, that wouldn't do at all.

"Sometime, then, I will show you. It really would be easier to understand if you were to see it, I believe." She took another sip of her juice, finding that she enjoyed it more as she adjusted to it's strangeness. "Do you know what fruit this is made from?" She held up the glass to the man so he could see.

"Yes, blitzball!" Her eyes lit up as she talked about the sport. "Spira's diversion. A sport, the teams play against each other in a large ball of water." She was gaining animation as she spoke. "There are two goals, and goalies to guard them. The teams try to get the ball into the goals."

Blitzball had always been some fun where there was little to be found, not just for her but for all of Spira. Any resident of her world would speak just like that about the sport, which distracted them from the things going on around them. "Oh, I wish I could show you! It's very exciting, with the stadium all lit up, all the people cheering..."

Marcus was relieved that Yuna agreed this was a bad place for a summoning. He didn't know why he should be so relieved. She certainly gave the impression that she was a sensible woman. "That sounds great." He looked closer at the drink she was holding up. "Um, is that juice? Do you mind if I have a look?" Marcus inspected the juice, expecting something exotic and unusual. "Um... I think that's orange juice." He watched her face for an expression of recognition.

Meanwhile, he appreciated the summoner's enthusiasm for her national sport. It sounded like it had a lot in common with some sports that he knew. "Blitzball sounds a lot like zero-G handball, only we don't play in water, just, you know, air. It sounds great, though. Clearly it is well-beloved by your people. The water must be a challenge to play in, though."

Personally, he couldn't imaging playing in a water-filled sphere. Though there had been no swimming pools on Arisa when he was growing up, he had played a game or two of water polo with his fellow Rangers on Minbar, and that had been work enough.

Yuna nodded. "Orange juice... it's orange, I suppose, but that seems a bit strange, to name it simply for it's color..." She peered into her glass, and sipped at it until it was gone. Her planet didn't have oranges, but she found she quite enjoyed the juice. With a thoughtful look, she put it down on a nearby table.

"Blitzball is very important to the people of Spira. Sometimes..." She hesitated before she continued. "There is nothing else to enjoy." She looked around, saw that the room had filled up quite a bit. They'd been here for a very long time, she realized.

"I liked talking to you." She confided to him with her very own brand of naive honesty. "I would like to do it again, and not just so that I can show you how I summon. But for now, if you will forgive me, I think I shall go. I'm new here, and there's a lot to see."

Having obtained his consent, she bowed to him. "I'm glad to have met you." With a slight smile his way, she turned and disappeared into the crowd, heading for the door.
