Perhaps this is not broadly understood, but while hallucinations can be a sign of illness, they do not always mean a person is unwell. Hallucinations are, in fact, relatively common.

Even so, it is sensible to see a doctor following any hallucination (even if there are no other symptoms). It is especially important in someone with an illness that may cause hallucinations; with older people, who are especially susceptible to ophthalmological and neurological disorders; and in the overtaxed, exhausted, or otherwise socially, emotionally, or intellectually strained. In addition to this, MPI, while a seemingly absurd concept, is legitimate where symptoms originate from very real disturbances in the nervous system and spread among a population with shared experiences.
