[Action | Mythology Class]
[It's Day 151 in Marina, and for Kurama and the inmates who've chosen to sample the Mythology course, it's the first day of class. The door to the classroom is open a little early, to give students plenty of time to find a seat and get comfortable, or to speak with the instructor before class if so inclined. The chairs have been arranged in a circle to allow for free flow of discussion. This class session is a meet-and-greet, not a lecture. Kurama stands off to one side so that his presence will hopefully not have too much impact on where the students sit, and he can readily be engaged in private conversation.

Once all of the students have arrived, Kurama takes a seat in the circle between two of them and offers the group a welcoming smile.]

Thank you for coming. I hope you've all had the opportunity to go over the course description and to hear the plans for today's session. As a quick reminder, this is the Mythology course, so if you were expecting something else, check your schedule, though I do encourage you to stay. You might have some fun. [His tone is on the comfortable edge of teasing, meant to help put the students at ease. First days can be nerve-wracking, he knows.]

Today, I'd like us all to get to know each other. We'll go around the circle and share names--there's no need for any honorifics or titles here, unless you prefer to use them--and if you have a folktale or legend you'd like to share from your world, please do. I'll get us started. My name is Kurama. That also happens to be the name of a mountain outside of Kyoto, Japan. There is an old story that claims the mountain is home to the ruler of the tengu, a powerful type of youkai, or demon, who are sometimes worshiped as gods. He is believed to have taught one of Japan's greatest warriors the art of swordsmanship more than eight hundred years ago.

[Kurama keeps his telling of the tengu of the mountain with which he shares his name brief. He wants his students to have plenty of time to share stories of their own, and after entertaining questions, moves the discussion around the circle.

After class, students are welcome to linger to chat with each other, or to bring any questions to Kurama they'd like to have answered before they leave.]

[OOC: There are three types of threads in this post.

A) [Share] These are threads where one character shares some mythology or folklore from home, and other characters respond. Again, don't feel as though you need to write a book! Just give fellow students something they can work with.

B) [Mingle] These are threads where students socialize before, during, and after class. Conversations and note-passing during class are fine, but check below or here for a note on what Kurama won't tolerate.

C) Lastly, characters who wish to speak directly to Kurama, please reply here. I will be turning off comment notifications to prevent total brain shutdown. ;)

Kurama posted here telling students what to expect on the first day. The course catalog entry is here. The long OOC explanation of this post is here.

Remember, if your character is going to disrupt the class in a non-productive fashion that should get them in trouble (think being blatantly disrespectful and rude to fellow students or Kurama), please please please let me know, because there will be consequences, and I need your input to determine what those consequences will be and if they should be played out or assumed.

This class meets from 9:00-10:00 AM in Classroom 7 at the Educational Facility.

Above all, have fun!]

[Need to speak to the teacher directly? Kurama's easy to spot with his long red hair and forest green eyes. Today, he wears a blue tunic embroidered with red flowers, as well as the white pants and Chinese slippers that he so often favors when not constrained by the image he must present as Shuuichi Minamino. Some people might consider the clothes formal, given the obvious nod toward old traditions, but Kurama wears them so comfortably that he gives the entire ensemble a casual air. Here is a teacher who's serious about his work, but not to the point that he and his students can't enjoy the learning process.]

[Buffy stands up when it's her turn to share; attribute that to years of organized American class rooms.]

Hi, [A little wave] I'm Buffy. [She takes a deep breath, twisting her hands together in front of her.]

There's a legend in my world about a girl that is born into every generation. Just one girl and she's got powers and abilities so that she can fight against vampires, demons and other things that go bump in the night. It all sounds pretty good, right? Except she fights these things without stopping, without any thank yous or complimentary coffee until she's dead and when that happens a new girl takes her place. It's a whole...cycle.

[After class, Buffy will hang around a little bit, putting her notes doodles together and the like.]

I think I kind of like organized classroom things.

Yeah but that's the way it always turns out. You're alone even when you've got friends because you're the only one that gets the whole burden-y thing.

I guess that puts dating out of the question. [jokingly]

[That actually gets a giggle out of her.] You have no idea how difficult it makes dating. Everyone is always 'poo poo why aren't you on patrol or defending the world?' or 'Buffy do you really think right now is the appropriate time for coffee? You should be training'. Because apocalypses don't come around often enough to keep me in shape.

[Pause because she can easily get carried away here.]

What was your name?

[she grins at that.] Oh, I'm Minako! I totally understand though. Nagging is always the worst. People who save the world should have extended vacations!

Yes! And drinks with little umbrellas. Maybe a gift package that includes a massage.

Yeah. That's sorta what a slayer is. Or part of what a slayer is.

[Ooh that's hopeful. Bonding over the suck of vampire slaying.]

Yeah? One girl in all the world chosen to hunt vampires? [Teasing, teasing.] But really, it's a destiny gig for you?

So you conquer evil?

You shouldn't complain. There's always a choice.

I could always die and then I wouldn't be the slayer.

[Sakura stands up from the chair when it's her turn, ducking her head into a shy bow] Hello! I'm Sakura Kinomoto.

[straightens up, looking a little thoughtful] In Japan, there's a story about Konohanasakuya-hime. She's the princess of the cherry blossoms and life on earth. One day she met a god named Ninigi and the two of them fell in love. They got married, but because Ninigi married her instead of her sister, Iwa-naga, humans have short, delicate lives - like the cherry blossoms on the tree.

[She smiles.] Ninigi and the princess really loved each other though, so they were happy to live their lives with each other, even if they were short!

My name is Alucard and I hail from the lands of Romania in Transylvania. Most of the legends of the area concern monsters and vampires.

*The dhampir neglects to point out that he, himself, would be considered a legend to most people.*

[Raistlin listens to the greetings so far and isn't really impressed. Most of the people didn't seem nearly enough aware of their worlds, or they were only aware of them because they were at the center of it. He stands when it's his turn and folds his arms across his chest, glancing over at all the students carefully.]

My name is Raistlin Majere. Legends and mythology are similar across worlds, or so it would seem. In my world, we have the old gods: Paladine, the god of good who's represented by white; Gilead, the god of neutrality who's represented by red; and Queen Takhisis [Here, Raistlin smirks] who's represented by the color black. These gods and the goddess represent the majority of my world, though there are other gods as well that exist. In most of your realms, I believe we'd be considered a paganistic society, but that's far from the actuality of it.

[Raistlin sits back down, having more to share, but deciding to leave it for later. It's not good to share everything at once.]
