[The burden of proof is on the person asserting that something exists.]

Probably not, but I can feel like I'm at least trying to leave.

[Ugh, so difficult.]

What are you doing to try other than not getting a pet?

I've been... [Um. Shit.] You're asking the hard questions today.

I think if we're being honest here you'll see you brought that one on yourself. [She looks amused as Chicago nudges his hand because it stopped doing the petting but she's still such a good girl!]

I did. You got me. [Chicago can have both hands because she's a gooood dog. Just as good as Jake the dog and Jake helped save humanity!] What should I be doing, Kitty?

[That is a good dog!

The amused look fades into something more thoughtful for a moment.]
I really, really wish I knew.

[Because nothing she's tried has worked yet.]

[This took a turn for the depressing. Does Chicago like hugs? She's getting a hug.]

Guess there's no reason not to get a pet.

[Tiny dog whine of concern but she doesn't mind the hug.]

Yeah... Well, sometimes it's just about survival.

[Such a good dog. ;;]

Is that what we're doing here? Surviving? We're eating at restaurants and going to dances. The biggest struggle I faced today was trying to decide which book to read. Survival should be harder than this.

Maybe survival is just something different here. [Maybe it's keeping your past from catching up and overtaking you. Maybe it's trying to deal with a future that seems almost attainable but still so unstable.]

Maybe. [Whatever it is, it almost feels harder than the kind of survival that involves struggling to help keep what remains of humanity alive and functioning. There's too much time to think and nothing productive to do. There's no point.]

There's nothing to do but keep going, anyway. Isn't that right, Chicago? [Share your doggy wisdom.]

[That's because it is.]

[Chicago barks.]

Back home even after my city was culled people found a way to go on there. Enough that Apocalypse sent forces in for a second culling. The X-Men were there to stop them though.

[Does Kitty really want her dog back? Because Gaeta would take her off of her hands. Brilliant conversationalist, Chicago.]

Did you stop them? Did you save anyone? [He needs the answer to be yes.]

[Paws off, Gaeta!]

They did. I had a different mission at that time. [You might not want to ask about survivors there, but she did save one person.]

[But!]

Yeah? I thought that you were one of them. [It's not quite a request for elaboration. More like an invitation to expand if she wants to.]

I am. [Not past tense.] There were a lot of us. We were split into smaller squads to cover more ground. We needed to rescue an important prisoner from a work camp.

It'd be hard to go into a place like that knowing you were only freeing one person. [Which is about as close as he's going to get to saying anything about personal experiences involving trying to save people from camps. Stop living a life that parallels his, Kitty. It's sad.] Was that mission successful?

Freeing one was costly enough.

[There's a pause before she responds.] We completed the objective. [She can't really label it a success and it's clear she's holding some part back.]

Mm. [She can hold whatever it is back. He's not her therapist; if she doesn't want to talk about something, she doesn't have to.]

...Have we had a conversation that didn't take a sharp turn for the depressing?

Why would we do something like that? Where's your sense of drama and excitement? [Yeah, she should probably work on that. It's a hard balance of leaving the past in the past and being too closed off because there's so little in her past that isn't depressing in one way or another.]

[He's willing to take the blame since he's not exactly overflowing with cheer.]

I'm done with drama and excitement. It's nothing but boredom from here on out. [He gives Chicago's ears another ruffle before straightening.] Can I count on you for a dance later?

You can pretty much always count on me for a dance. [She's dancesexual.]
