[ Lacking anything else to do, Kirk decided to take on the maze. He liked challenges and puzzles, and while this one wasn't meant to be all that difficult, it was still a pleasant distraction. That is, until Nico walks through a wall and right at him.

Which, unfortunately, has him reflexively reaching out to strike at him - because things popping out of walls are usually bad where he comes from. ]

Dude!

[He throws his hands up to block whatever may be coming, despite the fact that nothing can touch him today, and vice versa. ]

I come in peace!

[ He stops short of actually hitting Nico, which he would have felt guilty about - being able to touch him or not. ]

Damn it, Nico, you nearly gave me a heart attack!

Mission accomplished. There's nothing scary about these mechanical monsters. I had to do something about it.

Well that's just rude. You're lucky I'm in a forgiving mood.

Huh.

So, is the going through walls thing because of the costume, or your shadow-trick?

Costume. It takes no effort at all, and it's not as dark. Um... what are you supposed to be?

Can't you tell?

[ He sweeps the cape out behind him with that excellent sense of drama that came with it. ]

I'm a space pirate.

I know pirates, but I've never seen a space pirate. Is that even a real thing?

I'm a space captain, so why couldn't there be space pirates? I've fought with them, actually. They're a nasty bunch.

You're a captain? [He squints. Really? And you wound up in a tree surrounded by raptors.] What is your ship like? What do you do in space? [Because where he's from, this all sci-fi.]

[ Why is everyone always so surprised by that? ]

Yes, I'm a captain.

She's a constitution class vessel - twin warp engine, about 400 personnel capacity, best equipment in the Fleet.

As for what I do - search for new planets and peoples. That's the core of it, and then defending Federation space and also helping to foster relationships between planets or provide aid in times of distress. Essentially scientific and humanitarian efforts.

I didn't understand that first part at all.

But... have you found new planets and people? And what is a Federation space?

Yes, quite a few.

Federation space refers to the areas of space that are part of the United Federation of Planets, or otherwise under its protection.

You can do that in space? [Wonders never cease. His world could barely hold itself together, and other dimensions were uniting planets.]

Is it exciting? [Another space man made it sound a bit dull.]

Heh, yeah, of course. The Federation helps to encourage trade and peaceful relationships between planets, exchanging goods and cultures. It also offers protection against others who are less friendly - like the Klingons.

[ His mouth twitches at that, curling into a little smile. ]

Well, I think so. My job is to explore unknown space, claimed by no one, and discover new planets and species and widen our knowledge of the universe. You never know what you'll find at every new star.

Cling-ons? [What kind of stupid aliens are those? He's picturing something like koalas, or those jumpy little monkeys.]

So... You're like a space-age Magellan? [Can one circumnavigate space?]

Klingons.

[ He can tell he's having trouble with this. ]

They're humanoid, but generally taller and more muscular than human. They have rigged foreheads, and their culture is based largely on the notion of combat and conquering.

[ He laughs at the comparison. ]

Yeah, that's a good way of explaining what it is I do.

Oh... [He was way off. He still thinks it's a stupid name - but now he knows better than to say so out loud should he ever meet one.]

I like exploring too. But, all of the places I've gone have been discovered already.

Who knows, maybe there are some mysteries to uncover here. I mean, there is a whole jungle not that far off, there has to be something interesting in there. There's always something interesting in jungles.

...Uh-huh. Like lizards with razor sharp teeth and bugs the size of your head, and plants that want to kill you? I won't even go in there. [Not for the hell of it. And he's got monster-killing experience, and the ability to jump through shadows and he can raise the dead.]

Oh, is that all? That's... pretty mundane actually.

[ He says it so matter of factly, because honestly, it kind of is. You get nearly eaten by a number of things in your life and you just stop being completely terrified or surprised by things with teeth. Didn't mean he LIKED them, mind, just stopped being surprised by them when they showed up. ]
