So am I. [Not that he's a habitually unhappy person, but this is different. This is the kind of happiness that comes from a sense of belonging in a place that none of them really belong in. In being wanted as a person, not as a navigator or a genius or a familiar face.]

[She doesn't know what to say to that because there's too much and none of it will come out right with the way it makes her throat feel tight and her eyes sting. No, words won't work here at all, so she leans in to kiss him again instead. She tries to kiss the words into his mouth somehow. Communicate how much that means to her. How much it scares her to be wanted like that because she likes it and she isn't going to want to lose it and life is all about losing—battles, wars, relationships, friends, loved ones. It's the one lesson life has been very clear about teaching her. But there is one other lesson in there. That you never have to stop finding new things to fight for and new people to love. Hope is yours to hold onto for as long as you can handle the pain that might follow.]

[Even though Chekov isn't a skilled kiss-reader, he can tell that those words affected her--in a good way, obviously, since there is kissing. Maybe she doesn't feel exactly the same way. Maybe he's setting himself up for a repeat of what happened with Lucy. Maybe someday he'll be smarter about loving people, but that day is not today and he wouldn't trade right now for anything.]

He gets what she's thanking him for in the same nebulous way that he knows what he's being honest about. It hurts a little to hear, though. It sounds fragile and frightened, like she isn't sure if this is something that she should have.

No one should feel afraid of having someone love them.]

You're welcome, Kitty. [That's a ridiculous thing to say when there are so many other things that he wants to tell her, but it's less scary. He rests his chin on her shoulder and embraces her more securely.]

Her suggestion surprises him--maybe more than it should, so it's just as well that she can't see his face. She might notice his heart rate pick up. Bands would mean a lot to him, more for their symbolic value than the permissions they would grant (not that he's in any way opposed to those).]

But with the emotions and the wings and it just might be better to wait, but she wants him to know in the way she's failing to say that he's important to her.
