"Monogamy? Wait, isn't that the game where you buy all the hotels?" Big words should never be used around Kanji when there are shorter options available. He's always done poorly in school, not because he's stupid but because he feels shut out from it. As a little kid he was constantly bullied for his hobbies, for liking girl stuff, for being different. Class participation was never a priority compared to that. And now his teachers and classmates treat him like a delinquent which, okay, fine, he is but when stuff goes wrong it's not his fault. He might get in fights but he doesn't steal shit or bully people or whatever. The only reason he's stopped skipping school most days is because they sound like they mean it about holding him back a year. Either way he doesn't pay much attention to class and his grades have always been abysmal.

Jack stares at him for a moment, and then grins. There's absolutely no condemnation in it. He may have learned a lot through having lived a long time, but he's never been particularly academic either, and in any case this particular slip is kind of cute.

"That's Monopoly. Monogamy is only having one partner at a time. Being faithful to just one person." He smiles ruefully. "It's not something I was brought up to believe in."

"Huh?" Even having the concept explained to him is still confusing. He looks baffled by the idea and has to ask for clarification. "I don't get it, though. If you love somebody why would you wanna be with other people?"

He sighs softly, and (to his credit) mostly internally.

"Because believe it or not it is possible to love more than one person at the same time. And besides, sex doesn't always have to be about love. Sometimes it's just a physical attraction, nothing more. Different people can give you different things."

Kanji has not had anything even remotely approaching The Talk in his life so the mention of sex gets a predictable red faces and flustered response from him. "Ummm..." He visibly draws a blank before settling on, "I dunno if I get it but, you know, that's cool. I guess?" He clearly has no idea how to respond to any of this right now.

He hasn't? What on earth has his mother been thinking? The blushing and fidgeting gets him another almost-sigh from Jack.

"Okay, let's leave sex out of it for the moment. I take it that's not something you've much experience of yet."

He thinks for a moment. "How about we just compare it to friendship. You can be friends with more than one person at the same time, can't you? Even friends who aren't friends with each other?"

To be fair he's not around much between cutting class, picking fights and trying to solve a serial murder case. Mostly when she sees him it's to pick him up at the police station.

"Yeah, I guess so. But it still seems kinda weird. Unless this is one of those adult things people always you'll understand when you're older or whatever." Personally he thinks saying stuff like that is crap. It's just an excuse people use when they can't really explain something.

Jack gives him a rueful smile. "Unfortunately, there are always some things you really can't get until you've experienced them for yourself." He shrugs. "But then a lot of people are perfectly happy being with just one person, and there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be one of them, in which case you may never understand why I get so fired up about this. Don't worry about it. I was using it more as an example of openmindedness than anything else. That anything's possible and we shouldn't try to exclude things from our expectations, or feel anxious when our romantic inclinations are different from the norm."

"I don't think it's somethin' I'm gonna have to worry about." Let's face it, romance is not Kanji's strongest point. As far as he's concerned he is probably never going to find someone who totally gets what he's into, especially since he doesn't get it himself.

"Maybe not for the moment, I guess," Jack acknowledges, with a gentle smile. "No-one here who's caught your attention?"

It is a fairly limited pool of people, after all - not that that's stopped him from working up quite intense relationships with several people here!

"Huh?!" How did he not see this question coming? "No! Man, I got more important stuff to do here. Like knitting!" It's true, dating and romance and stuff are not a priority for him at all. And even if they were its not like there are any cute girls who dress like guys here to catch his eye or whatever.

He can't help but chuckle a little because, damn, Kanji is so cute!

"Knitting seriously does it for you that much?" he asks lightly, witha smile.

"I dunno. It's just fun, you know? Like, it's nice makin' stuff, and it feels good to have somethin' I'm good at." He hasn't gotten nearly as much crap about his hobbies here, anyway.

See? People are much more open-minded here - as much about boys knitting as boys liking other boys (or girls dressed as boys or whatever).

"Yeah, making things can feel really good. I can knit, you know. I was a soldier in World War One. A lot of us learned to knit, then."

"There's soldiers who can knit?" You're blowing his mind here, Jack. That sounds like super manly people doing a girly hobby. "What like scarves and stuff though, right? Not like animals or anything."

He grins affectionately at the look on Kanji's face. "Absolutely. Simple things, yeah - practical things like socks and scarves and balaclavas. I learned when I was laid up in bed after getting injured - they taught us as a useful way to pass the time and rehabilitate us."

"Right on. I can respect that." Actually that's pretty damn cool. He knows knitting calms him done but this is a new idea of using it to help people. Kinda neat, actually. "I'll show you how to do animals sometime." Obviously a skill everyone should know.

Jack gives him a slightly uneasy look - he's not really a stuffed animal kind of guy - but Kanji's so earnest about it, how can he say no?

"Sure. I'm very rusty, but I used to quite enjoy it, and I might even earn some rehabilitation points for it!" He grins. "Perhaps I could make something cute for Ianto."

"Yeah good idea. I'll show you next time." He runs a hand a little sheepishly through his bleached hair as he climbs out of his chair then adds, "Hey, thanks for hearin' me out. I don't have a lotta people to talk to here."

"I'll look forward to it!"

He smiles warmly. "And it's no problem at all, Kanji. Any time you want to talk, I'm here."
