John is in the park already, avoiding watching whatever might be on his disc. He has it on him, but he doesn't know when or if he'll watch it. He sits on one of the benches near the butterfly pavilion when he hears Leia walking this way... in more than one ways. He's not trying to pick up thoughts, but it happens whether he tries to or not.

But he wouldn't need to read her mind to see, she looks upset.

"Hey, Leia. Are you okay? Sorry I heard you coming before you showed up. I didn't... hear anything specific. My telepathy just doesn't shut off unless I make it."

Unless he actively focuses on closing his mind.

Leia can close herself of, shut down her mind and appear to be the least Force-sensitive thing in existence, but it's not something she's ever consciously done. It's always been instinct, a defense mechanism she was unaware of until she looked back and realized, in hindsight, that she must've done so to protect herself. Otherwise, Vader would have had more of a reason to keep her alive — or more of a reason to kill her.

Somehow, him figuring out that she was his daughter doesn't factor in. Like she's deliberately insulting his intelligence by assuming that he wouldn't stop ignoring how much she resembles a fallen senator, or the distinctive way family feels in the Force. So fundamentally different from everyone else.

"Don't apologize." It's a little too clipped, but also tired sounding. She's mad, but not enough to snap at someone undeserving. "I get it. I have the same kriffing problem."

Mad enough to swear in front of people she doesn't really know all that well, though, apparently.

"I'm fine." Lies. What a blatant lie, and one she knows is foolish to make in front of someone else who, like her, can probable sense emotions and feel the weight of truth in words. "I'll be fine," she corrects.

John hears how tired her voice sounds, and there's some measure of concern in his gaze as he looks at her. He's grateful she gets it. The swearing goes over his head completely so he doesn't look at all put off by that.

"It's... a big part of being telepathic. Hard to find anyone else that gets it here at least," he says quietly in agreement. He was surrounded by other people like him where he came from though there are so many problems there and so many problems he caused that he's not... he's not looking to go back even if he should.

Responsibility is a heavy weight especially when so many other lives are on the line.

He wasn't going to call her on the lie though he can feel all of the emotions swirling inside of her, can feel that she is saying so because she needs to. John has lied so much in his life, and he's shut down his own mind so deeply that even Cara couldn't read the darkest parts of it. Sometimes they deserve to get to keep some things to themselves. He understands that intensely well.

"Do... you want to talk about it?"

There's the warm, quiet tone in his voice which implies she doesn't have to.

There's no requirement. There's no expectation either.

Colorful word choices tend to lose their intended effect when the jargon is alien or spoken in another tongue entirely. Some of the words she's heard pop out of the other inmates' mouths don't sound nearly as vulgar to her ears as they do others, and she imagines her own sharp tongue sounds like utter gibberish to most. Like she's babbling in some sort of tangled, trader's argot instead of actual fragments of basic.

Similarly, the more she begins to embrace the Force-sensitive parts of herself, the more she's seeing that people just don't get it. Reid may understand it to a degree, but it was like he said: a lot of what he 'knew' was based purely on conjecture. John, on the other hand, has actual experience. Maybe the way his abilities manifest is different from someone who utilizes the Force, but he's still able to understand he power in ways others simply cannot.

"Not really," she says. "But I appreciate the offer."

It's comforting to know that if she does decide she wants to talk, she doesn't have to do so verbally. Like how she and Luke could reach out and summon one another without so much as picking up a comm. They just could, knew exactly where to find one another. Distance didn't matter; they could do it effortlessly. (She can't say whether that's a Jedi thing or a Twin thing.)

"Did you get a disc this morning?"

John hears the edge to those colorful word choices so he can only guess they are curse words of some kind even if he has never heard of them before. It's the emotion which carries through those curse words more than anything, and he nods at her answer accepting it very easily though the concern is still clearly in his gaze.

They wouldn't need to talk about it in words if she did want to share. They could share thoughts. They could share whole memories without needing to speak, and there has always been a comfort in that for John too despite how he shuts down his head at times with the darkest of things in his life.

"The offer is always open," he says after a moment, folding his hands loosely together before he glances down at the question but nods. "I did. I haven't... looked at mine yet. I don't know if I will."

He can't imagine it will show him anything good. "You?"

"Didn't look, either."

It's a shy admission, one that someone like John will find is laced with apprehension — anxiety, fear, and a sinking dread that she'll find the sort of dark twist she's almost expecting pollute her life. Like having Anakin Skywalker's blood flowing through her veins is some automatic sign of damnation.

"Some people may have received good memories, but somehow I doubt that I will."

John sends her a quiet but warm look at the shy admission. He can feel the apprehension, the anxiety, the fear, and the sinking dread too. There's a pause then as he breathes through that, and he feels some of his own anxiety at the thought of his disc which he's kept on him but he hasn't looked at yet.

"Your life must be really difficult. Painful." He breathes out then between his teeth, staring down at the floor. The tension in him rolls off of him in waves. "I doubt mine will either. Part of me wonders if I'm not... just avoiding something I just need to face."

Whatever is on that disk. If it's a memory though, he remembers it all so well. Good, bad, mistakes. Mistake after mistake.

"It has and it hasn't," she says steadily. "Rougher than it used to be."

And in the wake of learning that more people than just Elena have seen Star Wars, it's a welcomed reprieve to speak to someone who has no clue who she is. To speak vaguely and not have him know exactly what she's talking about and not admit to it. The fact that Reid had done that so much with her hurts. She trusted him. Liked him. Befriended him. Leia's been told so many lies lately, that having someone she got close to do the same is like rubbing salt in an already open wound. The fact that he did so with the best of intentions makes it worse.

Obi-Wan and Yoda had good intentions, too, however skewed.

John lifts his head to look over at her at her steady response. His expression is quiet.

"I'm sorry to hear that," he says genuinely, quietly as his hands fold together in front of him. It is also eerie to think of this prison being able to pull memories out of their head and have them watch it this way. It would make him more uncomfortable to know future events are also on those discs. He'll watch his eventually, but it won't be any time soon. "And now you're in a prison, which has a deceptive amount of freedom while taking your choice to be here or not away, while taking away control."

On several occasions beyond just the forced into prison part. Switching bodies, forcing people to kiss.

Eerie indeed. It bothers her a lot more than she lets on that this place seemingly has the power to get inside her head when not even Darth Vader and his interrogation droid were able to. It meant that whoever was really pulling the strings around here was a lot more powerful than her father — perhaps even more so than the Emperor. And that terrified her.

"I've been imprisoned before," Leia offers up with a shrug, as if being arrested and tossed into cells is no big deal. "But the accommodations here are considerably better. On most days, anyway."
