Jack is such an uninhibited person it hasn't even occurred to him that others might view something like this as private, or even slightly creepy. And at the moment, he wants to share this. There are so few people here who knew the Doctor (only Martha, really; Ianto doesn't really count) and no-one else who remembers this Doctor. He wants to share that - and with Kanji? Yeah, there's definitely an element of wanting to give back what the Doctor gave him.

"He called me on my shit, mostly," he says, with a wry glance at Kanji. "I was young and arrogant and making a mess of things, and he set me on the right track. I accidently almost wiped out the human race. He helped me see what I needed to do to save them, and then he saved me."

That kind of his home with some conversations he'd had with his senpai before coming here. About how he felt like no matter what he does he just makes a mess. Makes things harder for people in his life. His mom, mostly. It's hard, always being a screwup and not really knowing how to fix it. Mostly he just keeps doing the same stuff like get in fights and skipping school because he gets so pissed off by screwing everything up he just keeps letting it out by doing the same dumb things.

"Damn, that's some pretty heavy stuff. So you guys saved the world together?" Seems like the story doesn't just end there since the video is still going.

"More than once, actually, yeah. In 1941, 2005 and 200,100. Not to mention quite a few other places, as well. It's kind of what the Doctor does."

He nods up at the screen, where the initial friction between him and the Doctor is easy to see. "Even then, it took us a while to work out how we all worked best together. The Doctor and Rose were already a team and I was a bit of a third wheel for a while. But turned out, we each had our strengths. It was fabulous, for a little while."

"Man, conversations with you always make my head hurt." Time travel involves too much math for Kanji's comfort. Even trying to think about how those years fit in relationship to each other is giving him the sort of frustrated headache that usually makes him quit studying and eat some animal crackers instead.

"I get that. Sometimes you gotta learn to work as a team. So what happened? You said for a little while." Why end a good friendship?

Jack chuckles warmly. He can barely remember what it was like not being used to time-travel, though he knows he found it confusing at first too.

Then the smile fades as up there on the screen the vid shows him making his goodbyes to Rose and the Doctor. "I died." Right on cue, there's a shot of him facing down the Daleks and an extermination that still makes him wince, even after all this time. "And Rose brought me back, but as an abomination in the Doctor's eyes. He couldn't stand to be around me, so he left. Abandoned me on a dead space station, hundreds of thousands of years out of my own time, or Rose's. And that was that. Almost a century and a half until I managed to hook up with him again and find out what actually happened."

"Fuck that guy," Kanji's got that same determined, stubborn look on his face that he always wears when he's not going to back down on something. Because despite his academic limitations he does know what abomination means, okay? And he doesn't take it well when people get singled out for being different. It's personal, sure, but it's the reason he always has Naoto's back at home and even the reason he got pissed about that Mitsuo guy getting plastered all over the news as a suspect in the murder case. Not 'cause he wasn't guilty but because the first thing people do with shit like that is start prying into crap like yearbook quotes and online comments just looking for an excuse to write them off as another one of the weird kids like that explains everything.

"People who look for a reason to make other people feel different and left out can get bent!" It's probably not the reaction Jack has to the video but it's Kanji's takeaway from it all.

He expected sympathy, but not such a full-on, wholehearted reaction as that. He stifles down his own instinctive reaction, which is to defend the Doctor, even know, and instead turns his body to face Kanji a bit more.

"Hey, hey, it's okay, long time ago, water under the bridge and all that," he says gently, even though it's fairly obvious from his face that he's not quite as over it as he'd like to be. "Where's all this coming from, Kanji?"

"Huh?" Kanji's natural defense mechanism regarding thinking and articulating things kicks in and he looks confused and stumped by the question. "I just don't think it's right to treat people like shot 'cause they're different. It ain't how a man's supposed to act, you know?"

"Absolutely, of course it's not. But sometimes there are good reasons why someone acts the way they do. In this case, because he's a Time Lord, the Doctor's extremely sensitive to time and how it's supposed to run and how it doesn't do that around me any more. Apparently. From what he says, it was an overwhelming visceral reaction." He wonders, briefly, if the Doctor would be able to sense if he's now mortal again.

"It doesn't make it right, but sometimes you can understand why someone reacts the way they do. And hopefully, once they've overcome their gut reaction, they'll stop treating you the way they do. Even the Doctor did, eventually. And okay, it was a century and a half for me, but it was only a couple of years for him, so I can't really complain!"

He leans forward slightly, a faint line between his brows. "Is anyone being mean to you about who you are, here?"

"Huh?" Is he stumped by the word visceral or by the way the conversation has been turned on him? It's hard to say. Kanji doesn't do well with deep conversations and tends to avoid them or just blurt out what he thinks and look surprised if people react to it. He still doesn't really get how Jack can defend someone who left him behind like that. Come on, he looks so sad to be left behind in that video! He really got over that? Over being abandoned for a hundred years?

"No, everybody here's been pretty cool. Better than at home, mostly. I get a lot less shit here than I did before." Aside from his friends on the Investigation Team he doesn't get along with many people back home so making a lot of friends here has been unexpected but cool.

"Yeah, the people here are generally much more open-minded than the average population back home," he nods, interested. "I wonder if that's something that comes with the kind of people we are? Villains and heroes, people who by their nature tend to have a lot more contact with the out of the ordinary anyway."

"It's kinda hard to get used to," He admits. He can handle the TV world and Shadows and hunting down a serial killer just fine but the fact that basically no one here has had a problem with him either because he looks like a delinquent or because of his very different hobbies and interests? That's a little overwhelming. "Hey, um, thanks. For the open-minded thing. Sorry I was kinda I dick last time we talked."

Jack lifts a shoulder and lets it fall again. "Don't worry about it. I probably deserved it. I'm not very good at the father thing.

"How've you been, anyway? Any strange experiences on body swap day or anything?"

Kanji goes redder than Jack has probably ever seen him in response to that question, making a weird choking noise like he doesn't quite have the words to handle it yet. There's lots of stammering and fidgeting in his chair before he finally manages a very shaky nod.

"Uhh, yeah, about that." Bodyswap day was a freaky day on a lot of levels and shockingly his attempts to discuss them with his friends and come to terms with it have failed, mostly because his friends list consists of Yuuri and Nico and none of them are useful in these sorts of situations. "You, uh, you remember how I said there was that girl I liked at home? The one I thought was a guy? They switched me with her."

Once again, that's a far bigger response than he was expecting. He watches Kanji squirm with a mixture of mild amusement and concern (though he does his best to keep his expression blank) and waits for it to come out.

When it does, his eyes widen and his eyebrows go waaay up.

"Woah, that sounds like a hell of a day! I was talking to Euphie about how weird getting gender-switched must be, but wow - that sounds way more confusing! How are you coping?"

There must be something really fascinating on the floor based on how hard he's suddenly staring at it instead of Jack. There's a long moment of silence while he decides what he wants to say. He doesn't know him all that well but this next part is still messing with his head and he doesn't have anyone else to talk to it about. Not Euphie, at least, because he doesn't want her to feel bad about it. And even though he'd never admit it he kind of looks up to Jack, mostly because he seems like he's everything Kanji wants to be. He's confident and he's got his sexuality figured out but he's also got the manly hero thing going on - hell, he was just shooting aliens in that video a second ago! So maybe that wanting to be like him is what makes him start talking about this, because he's got no one else to do that with.

"You talked to Euphie? That day, with her powers?" Still not making eye contact.

He waits patiently, or at least as patiently as he's able, because he gets that this must be pretty big for Kanji and he wants to help, if he can.

"Yeah, though I didn't know about her powers at that point. I'm not sure she really used them on me at all." His brow furrows faintly. "Did she use them on you?"

He assumes that's where this is going, anyway.

"She didn't mean to!" Instantly jumping to Euphie's defense because he knows it wasn't her fault and he's been doing his best not to freak her out about it. It's way too similar to her own mind control thing and he doesn't want her thinking about it like that.

"I told her it was weird, being in Naoto's body, and she said not to think about it and to enjoy myself so I..." He trails off, because there's no way he's going to actually be able to describe what happened, no chance the word masterbated is actually going to be spoken here. It's the sort of dots Jack can probably connect, though. "She tried to make me forget about it afterwards but it wore off. It's, um, I'm kind of freaking out about it, actually."

"I know she didn't," he nods, at that first bit, and then falls silent, waiting once more to see where this is going. And then it gets where it's going and he has to work hard to surpress the appreciative smirk that tries to wrap its way around his mouth.

"Are you freaking about being in a girl's body, or about having enjoyed it, or about forgetting about it?" he asks. Just so he's clear.

"I think it's 'cause I know she's got a lot of issues with her body. I don't think she would like knowing I did that." It's a surprising mature and perceptive response from Kanji but sometimes he's good at cutting to the heart of things. Part of the awkwardness it is that he did it in front of Euphie, too, of course. It's a mess any way he looks at it.

"Being in her body was weird, too, but, I dunno, maybe it helped? I kinda, um, looked at things," Bright red again, because he did that on his own and he knows Naoto wouldn't like that, either. She's really private about stuff like that. He's never even seen her in a swimsuit like the other girls he's friends with. "And, I mean, I think I liked it. Her, I mean, not being her. And I think I would have liked it if she was a guy, too. I dunno if that makes sense. I mean, I've been so worried about what I like but what if I just like somebody for who they are and the rest of it don't matter as much?"

"It makes perfect sense." Okay, perhaps not all the stuff that happened with Euphie, because that's all a bit much to follow, but the last part? Oh yeah. He leans forward, forearms on his thighs, his face earnest - fervent, almost - because this is something he feels strongly about and something so few people (at least in the period he's been stuck in) seem to get.

"People always try to put you in categories, but love - or liking, or whatever you want to call it - it's not like that. Your heart doesn't care what gender someone is, any more than it cares what colour they are, or what race they are. You like Naoto, period. Doesn't matter if she's a girl or a boy. She's the one you want to be with."

"I think I get it," Kinda like what he said to his Shadow back forever ago. It ain't about dudes or chicks. I'm just scared shitless of bein' rejected. "I dunno if that makes it easier or not though."

'Cause that's the thing. Even if everyone here is pretty cool he still feels like this sort of thing isn't exactly tough and manly like how he wants to be. It still makes him feel different and different is hard sometimes. He already knows it's one thing to accept stuff and another to really be comfortable with it. Sure, maybe this is an extra bit of clarity he really needed and maybe when Jack says it like that is sounds all cool and normal and stuff but it still takes work, being okay with being different. That's the part he's never been all that great at.

Jack chuckles, leaning back again. "Ah well, yeah, that's the thing, of course. However much sense it makes, it's always hard to overcome social conditioning." He spreads his hands. "After all, look at me! All right, so with me it's the other way round, but honestly - I've lived a hundred and fifty years through the nineteenth to the twenty-first century and I still find it hard to accept the concept of monogomy. I mean, I'm trying - I'm trying really hard nowadays, because of what it means to Ianto - but I still slip up and forget. It's hard, whichever way round it goes!"

"Monogamy? Wait, isn't that the game where you buy all the hotels?" Big words should never be used around Kanji when there are shorter options available. He's always done poorly in school, not because he's stupid but because he feels shut out from it. As a little kid he was constantly bullied for his hobbies, for liking girl stuff, for being different. Class participation was never a priority compared to that. And now his teachers and classmates treat him like a delinquent which, okay, fine, he is but when stuff goes wrong it's not his fault. He might get in fights but he doesn't steal shit or bully people or whatever. The only reason he's stopped skipping school most days is because they sound like they mean it about holding him back a year. Either way he doesn't pay much attention to class and his grades have always been abysmal.

Jack stares at him for a moment, and then grins. There's absolutely no condemnation in it. He may have learned a lot through having lived a long time, but he's never been particularly academic either, and in any case this particular slip is kind of cute.

"That's Monopoly. Monogamy is only having one partner at a time. Being faithful to just one person." He smiles ruefully. "It's not something I was brought up to believe in."
