[ a permissive nod. fingers wedged carefully between the pages, leia picks up the book and gathers her skirts, lifting off the ground to put herself at the table, as well. the skirt is long enough to hide her ankles, and her hair is braided into a long tail that hangs down her back and past her waist. she has to toss it over the back of the chair to avoid sitting on it. ]

Fiction blurs reality, naturally. [ keeping in mind that these movies could have amplified or diluted certain situations, nevermind outright twisted them into something they actually weren't. ] But I can't ignore the fact that you know more than my brother and I could have ever hoped to.

[ He nods, still keeping some distance here. Good thing he's practically an expert at slipping into a professional mindset. ]

So let's start there — what do you know?

[ they both are — the ex-senator and FBI agent, masters of professionalism and acting like everything is okay. ]

That the Jedi were not the enemies the Empire made them out to be. I know plenty about their history and what they did for the Republic. [ bail told her that much. ] What I don't, is how they... do what they do. In case you haven't noticed, I'm flying blind here. You're not Force-sensitive, but as it stands, you likely know more about the Force than I do.

[ Is this where he explains midichlorians? No? ]

That... I can try, but don't get your hopes up too high. It's not explained in any great detail and I'm basing a lot of this on conjecture. You know about sensing presences already, I assume?

[ this is where he doesn't explain that anakin had no father. let's not give her an existential crisis to go along with everything else that's eating away at her. ]

Of course.

From what I've understood, that's the basis for using the Force. It's... all-present, and so you need to find a way to tap into it and manipulate it the way you want. Like, for instance... planting a suggestion in someone's mind, you'd have to penetrate their thoughts through the Force.

Does that make sense?

It does, and some of that I was already aware of. [ both subconsciously and not. it's amazing how much of this is pure instinct for the twins, remarkable how much they were able to figure out without proper instructors when they were first starting out. there's plenty leia wouldn't need to learn from saba sebatyne, because she already found a way to do it all on her own.

she leans across the table, one arm folded on top. ]
Volunteering to be a test subject? Or was that what you were asking me to do while you were trapped as Jack?

That? No... no, that was something else. You could tell it was me in Jack's body, so naturally you should be able to tell if something else is, ah. Amiss. [ Like his brain breaking or whatever. ]

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with you putting suggestions into my head.

I've been able to tell when most things here are amiss.

[ just hasn't said much on the topic. leia may be open to exploring her force-sensitivity, but she's still not entirely comfortable in her skywalker shoes. she's not luke. she doesn't want to be everyone's go-to jedi. ]

So... that's a start, I suppose. A... a more passive use of the Force? I'd guess that if you can do that deliberately, then you should be able to turn it into an active manipulation of your surroundings with some practice.

That's what I'd put my money on, at least.

And you want me to, what, give the Defense Force a ring every time I sense a disturbance in the Force? [ because what she really wants to do right now is have a conversation of any kind with kitty. ] Or you?

What? No... no no. [ Ugh okay. Let's... start that bit over. ]

I'm running an experiment... basically going into virtual reality to try and find a way to break it, mentally. If I can break the simulation under controlled circumstances, maybe I can break it out here too. I'm just not sure what it'll actually... do. A friend of mine is a doctor - he's promised to take care of the physical part of it, make sure I don't do any damage but since we're not even in our physical bodies right now I'm pretty desperate for other ways to make sure I don't wreck myself in the simulation.

That's what I wanted your help with. To monitor me during the experiment so I don't... I don't know. Die.

You want me to get into your head while you do this?

Maybe? I haven't worked out the details yet, but something like that... you could tell it was me in Jack's body. Maybe you can tell if I'm about to have an aneurysm.

I'm Force-sensitive, not a medical scanner. I don't know if I'd be able to detect a cerebral vascular event.

I said I didn't know if I could, not that I was unwilling to try!

Yes, I'm still mad, and I think I'm well within my right to be angry. But I also want to go home to my brother and– and Han. To the Alliance and the refugees from my world that look to me for leaderships and guidance. I can put my personal feelings aside and work on this with you.

Okay. [ He leans forward in his seat, something hard seeping into his posture. Up until now he's been mostly sweet, mostly passive around her. Careful. There's little of that left now, replaced by the cold, analytical professionality that he so often relies on when he's way out of his emotional depth. ]

Then we'll work together, as professionals.

[ she eyes him suspiciously, as if she's a little hurt that he seems to think she can't work professionally with someone she's not particularly happy with. hurt, but not surprised, as the pessimist realist within is rearing its ugly head and reminding her that even sugar looks like salt. ]

I'm fully capable of working with you as a professional. Never doubt that. I'm well versed in putting business first.

[ though it makes her long for the company of seasoned generals twice her age: of rieekan's cool head, madine's rationalism, and dodonna's constant understanding. she even misses mon mothma's firm, unwavering hand. ]

Oh, I know.

[ If she's going to be angry about him knowing more than he let on no matter what he does, then there's no point in keeping it on the down low is there? He's pretty frustrated with this whole situation and although he can't blame anyone for it - she has every right to be angry, he had his reasons to keep quiet - he does feel like she's being unreasonable on some accounts. Enough so to bring out the passive-aggressiveness in him. ]

So, we have a deal, then? I'll be your... your guinea pig to work out the Force and you'll help me with the experiment?

[ leia doesn't know what a guinea pig is, but she gets the general gist, and there's a flash of something that has her standing so abruptly that her braid whips around her like a live wire. the empire was notorious for experimenting on people, and even with his consent — she would never. she might have successfully closed herself off to vader's probing, but she can still remember how it felt to be aware of his attempts at prying her mind open in attempt to get a closer look at what tarkin swore she knew. ]

I'll help you, but if you think that I was asking to use you when all I want is the benefit of your knowledge, then you really don't know me at all.

[ walking around him, she stoops low to retrieve her books. ] Contact me when you wish to begin. [ and then she's gone, heading for the exit with the books held tightly to her chest. ]
