[Maybe you're at the media store or educational center to play your disc. Maybe you're just out and about somewhere contemplating what you saw or whether to see it. Either way, you're bound to run into someone!]

It's okay. [More people probably would have meant more people to lose back then.] I was thirteen. [See, teenager. Totally not a big deal.]

That's when Apocalypse's soldiers came to get me. They detected my mutant signature. My parents tried to protect me, so they were killed before I had any idea what was even happening. [She's actually pretty okay telling the story. It's an old one now and she prefers the happy images she's been seeing of them today to this memory.]

[He puts his head on her shoulder—you know, since they're already practically snuggling—and tries to say with physical affection what he doesn't know how to say with words.] The wardens were kind enough to not remind you of that. Maybe their intentions are less malicious than I thought.

[She is just going to switch to full hug mode, okay?] Partial reinforcement is the strongest kind. [She thinks the yo-yoing is on purpose to mess with them even more.] But they don't need to remind me of that day. I never forget that day. It's the good ones that were slipping. I'm glad I have this video.

[Hug mode, activate!] Ah... like gambling? [He isn't a psychologist, but that makes sense. Let them lose most of the time and, every so often, slip in something good that makes them come back for more whatever the odds.] Why is remembering the good so much harder than the bad? This is something I don't understand. Commander Spock claims that it is evolutionarily advantageous, but we would all be more content if good memories came more easily.

Yeah, kind of like that.

[She's quiet thinking about that.] He's probably right. Content people don't explore or grow or challenge things. [Didn't you see Firefly? Okay, neither did she.]

Content people can explore. [What do you think he's doing with his life!] No, you're maybe right. The people I know who challenge things—the people who are heroes—have had a lot of unhappiness in their lives. [coughKittycough]

[Guilty as coughed.] Speaking of... Do you want to talk about it? [Okay, he didn't seem to want to, but she's worried.]

About my disc? [He shrugs and looks away.] I have learned to swim—poorly—and I try not to be trapped in places where I might drown. No problem.

What was happening? [And she wished she'd known during the dome's flood not that there was anything more she could have really done for him then.]

Kirk—he was a cadet then—had many enemies, and they attempted to frame him for a number of things. My involvement was wholly random. [Which is what bothers him almost as much as the nearly-drowning. He was targeted for no reason at all.]

What were they trying to frame him for? A prank? ...Murder? [How much danger were you in?]

At that time? Murdering the youngest cadet at the Academy. [Clever, actually. Chekov was widely-known and generally well-liked, so his murder would have caused considerable problems for the accused.]

[Hugging her tighter, maybe for her sake as much as his.] How did you get out?

[He appreciates it either way.]

There was a manual release at the bottom the door, a latch, but the water made it stick. I needed a knife to move it. Then the water pressure in the room kept the door from opening—too much pressure on the door track. My friend, Alexandra, found other cadets to help her force the door open. [He attempts a smile.] Of course there were many cadets willing to help. I was popular with Alex and her friends.

I'm glad they did. [Because that was no way to die and no reason to die.]

Who were these enemies of Kirk's? Were they other cadets? [Inside your own team?]

[There are so many better ways to die and many better things to die for.]

One was disguised as a cadet. The others... [He shakes his head.] I was uninterested in learning about them. They were stopped, and I was happy with that.

[She nods. It feels like Chekov not to be vengeful, but she'd like to give them a scare on his behalf.]

You didn't look very old there. How old are people when they usually start the training?

[Not learning about the people behind this plot was largely motivated by Chekov's lack of love for vengeance. (He wouldn't keep Kitty from frightening them a bit, though.)]

Eighteen at the youngest, usually. [He looks a little proud.] I started at thirteen.

You have an accent like my former husband. The face of my current roommate and you're a genius like Reid. [Not label for him.]

But most of the time I don't think of any of that when I'm with you because you're very distinctly you and no one else. [But, yes, there are moments when it feels very stark and a little uncomfortable.]

That is an unfortunate combination of traits, if you would rather not be reminded of them so often.

[He really hopes that she means that last part, though.] Thank you. I try to be distinct.

It's not always so bad to be reminded of them. [A little confusing sometimes. But with him it never feels bad. She does mean what she said.] You don't have to try. You just are.

[There are some warm fuzzy feelings going on right now that are helping dispel any lingering unpleasantness.] You're a good friend to me, Kitty. I know you had doubts about this the last time I told you.
