360 - Instant Replay Mingle
[Maybe you're at the media store or educational center to play your disc. Maybe you're just out and about somewhere contemplating what you saw or whether to see it. Either way, you're bound to run into someone!]

[Her eyes turn to the real and present Chekov when the video ends. She's not sure what to make of what she saw, but she's not listing it as one of the good discs.] Pavel?

It could have been worse. [His tone and expression are flat. Calmly, he retrieves the disc and snaps it in half.]

[She can't remember ever seeing him like this before. She's not entirely sure what to do. He doesn't really look receptive to a hug, but she tests the waters, placing a gentle hand on his.]

[He looks down at her hand and his expression softens into something sad. He leans against her.] Could we watch yours again?

[She wraps an arm around him.] As many times as you want.

Thank you, Kitty. [Yes, this is good. He needs some comfort, and there aren't a lot of people here he can turn to for it.] I like seeing you happy.

I like seeing you safe and dry. [There's a squeeze of her arm before she puts her disc in.]

I like this, also. [He watches again, and there's something about a happy Kitty that's as sad as it is nice to see.] Your parents look like they were very kind.

I don't know if that's how everyone would describe Dad, but he was always good to me. Mom was a nurse. They loved me. [It's a good thing to remember and have some tangible proof of. It's easy to let things slip away when you're feeling sad and insecure. But she was loved. She's always been loved.]

I'm sure that they did. [They look like they did. He hopes they did, because she deserves that much.] You were their only child?

Yeah. And they were all I had. [No aunts, uncles, cousins, or grandparents. There were some more distant relatives but she only saw them a couple of times at funerals and weddings.]

I'm sorry. [Maybe he shouldn't have asked about them, but he wants to know about the Kitty who existed before her world ended.] You were still a child when you lost them?

It's okay. [More people probably would have meant more people to lose back then.] I was thirteen. [See, teenager. Totally not a big deal.]

That's when Apocalypse's soldiers came to get me. They detected my mutant signature. My parents tried to protect me, so they were killed before I had any idea what was even happening. [She's actually pretty okay telling the story. It's an old one now and she prefers the happy images she's been seeing of them today to this memory.]

[He puts his head on her shoulder—you know, since they're already practically snuggling—and tries to say with physical affection what he doesn't know how to say with words.] The wardens were kind enough to not remind you of that. Maybe their intentions are less malicious than I thought.

[She is just going to switch to full hug mode, okay?] Partial reinforcement is the strongest kind. [She thinks the yo-yoing is on purpose to mess with them even more.] But they don't need to remind me of that day. I never forget that day. It's the good ones that were slipping. I'm glad I have this video.

[Hug mode, activate!] Ah... like gambling? [He isn't a psychologist, but that makes sense. Let them lose most of the time and, every so often, slip in something good that makes them come back for more whatever the odds.] Why is remembering the good so much harder than the bad? This is something I don't understand. Commander Spock claims that it is evolutionarily advantageous, but we would all be more content if good memories came more easily.

Yeah, kind of like that.

[She's quiet thinking about that.] He's probably right. Content people don't explore or grow or challenge things. [Didn't you see Firefly? Okay, neither did she.]

Content people can explore. [What do you think he's doing with his life!] No, you're maybe right. The people I know who challenge things—the people who are heroes—have had a lot of unhappiness in their lives. [coughKittycough]

About my disc? [He shrugs and looks away.] I have learned to swim—poorly—and I try not to be trapped in places where I might drown. No problem.

Kirk—he was a cadet then—had many enemies, and they attempted to frame him for a number of things. My involvement was wholly random. [Which is what bothers him almost as much as the nearly-drowning. He was targeted for no reason at all.]

At that time? Murdering the youngest cadet at the Academy. [Clever, actually. Chekov was widely-known and generally well-liked, so his murder would have caused considerable problems for the accused.]
