360 - Instant Replay Mingle
[Maybe you're at the media store or educational center to play your disc. Maybe you're just out and about somewhere contemplating what you saw or whether to see it. Either way, you're bound to run into someone!]

[Defense Force headquarters, you say? Chekov is there doing who-even-knows-what, a mess of papers in various states of being filled with sloppy handwriting spread out in front of him and no disc in sight. He looks up when Kitty comes in and gives her a bright smile.]

Kitty, good morning. [pause] Afternoon. I have no idea.

[He gets a smile back. She's in kind of a great mood.] Should I be worried? Maybe making you a sleeping and eating schedule? Or just getting you a watch or sundial?

I'm inside too often. A sundial would never work. [He isn't sure if this unusual cheeriness is something that he should comment on or accept as a happy improvement.] Did something good happen?

What makes you think that? My willingness to be your life coach? [Yeah, okay, so she's kind of all smiles today. Doesn't mean she has to acknowledge it.]

That and the smiling. Normally I need to work to get a smile from you.

That sounds exhausting. You should get hazard pay. [It's more of a smirk now, but still very good natured.]

I had a good disc. [But that also prompts a little concern.] How was yours? [She knows it's more likely most people had it rough even if he seems okay.]

Oh, yes. Hazard pay to supplement all of the pay that I get already.

I haven't watched mine. What was on yours? [He was under the impression that there weren't a lot of happy things in her life.]

[She slides the disc in to the computer.] Come and see.

[It's the end of a dance recital. The colors of her unitard are louder than the music she's dancing along to. There's a bad skirt at her waste and she's young but still recognizable. She's dancing a solo for the finale of the show and she's good. Really good. Then all the dancers come out for final bows and applause before little Kitty runs off the stage to her waiting parents. There are hugs and praise. Both of them tell her they love her.

And current Kitty is biting her bottom lip as she rewatches to keep from tearing up again as the video ends.]

[He watches with her, not surprised by how good she is but still impressed. And her parents...

Chekov nudges her.]
I'm glad that you have this.

[Tiny sniffle as she looks up to him, smiling.] Me too.

I hadn't seen them since... [You know, watching them murdered in front of her.] I couldn't save any photos.

[A nod. She doesn't need to elaborate.] Now you can see them whenever you like. We do get to keep these, yes?

[He retrieves his from under the flurry of papers and gives it a contemplative look. Maybe his mother is on there, or his friends from the Academy who died with Nero's first attack.]

I think so. I made a copy just in case they disappear by the time we wake up. [And she's going to watch it roughly a million times today too.

She watches him as he considers his disc.]
The odds are better that it will be something bad. I'm not saying don't look. Just...expecting bad might be easier.

Very wise. It would be like the wardens to give us something good, only to take it away.

[He moves to insert the disc into the computer, then pauses.] Would you think less of me if it was something bad?

I let you watch me in a magenta skirt. [Not sure if he's even fully serious. He wouldn't really think that of her, would he?] I think I owe it to you.

And I thought that was adorable. [He's serious enough—both about finding baby Kitty adorable and being unsure of her opinion of him. There are certainly some things in his past that make him think less of himself.]

If you're sure. [A grateful smile, then he plays the disc.

There's Chekov, thirteen and scrawny and with a mess of curly hair that hasn't been trimmed at the sides, standing in a small room with no windows. There's little more than a bed, a desk, and an impressive array of technological devices built into the wall. It's also rather wet; the emergency sprinklers have been activated.

Chekov tries to turn the sprinklers off, first from the sleek computer on the desk, then manually, muttering to himself in Russian about how ridiculous the situation is all the while. When that fails, he places calm calls to both housing services and the fire department. Concern doesn't start to manifest until the water reaches his knees and the lights flicker, then dim. The pale emergency lamps along the ceiling cast the room in a cold light.

One of the wall monitors buzzes with static, then comes to life. There's a male figure, backlit and faceless. "Cold water is a bad way to die," it says, voice distorted. "Quarry water goes down deep, forever, and it gets colder and colder. It's dark. Black. It's like death. I felt it. My brother felt it." And the display goes black. Chekov looks surprised and perplexed, but not frightened.

The water is rising more rapidly now. Getting desperate, Chekov climbs onto the desk and tries turning the sprinklers off manually once more. The sprinkler head breaks off in his hand. He swears and pulls out his communicator. His voice is still steady as he explains his situation to someone named Alex. The conversation, sprinkled with casual comments on how Chekov intends to ask for his room deposit back and how blast-resistant the walls in this dormitory are, ends with a polite "thank you" on Chekov's end.

The emergency lights go out and everything is plunged into complete darkness. A moment later, Chekov's communicator sheds a faint light on the room—on water that has risen past the top of his desk, and on a shivering thirteen year-old. He looks frightened for the first time.

And that's it.

Current Chekov watches grimly. If only he could have summoned this particular poker face last night!]

[Her eyes turn to the real and present Chekov when the video ends. She's not sure what to make of what she saw, but she's not listing it as one of the good discs.] Pavel?

I like this, also. [He watches again, and there's something about a happy Kitty that's as sad as it is nice to see.] Your parents look like they were very kind.

I don't know if that's how everyone would describe Dad, but he was always good to me. Mom was a nurse. They loved me. [It's a good thing to remember and have some tangible proof of. It's easy to let things slip away when you're feeling sad and insecure. But she was loved. She's always been loved.]

I'm sure that they did. [They look like they did. He hopes they did, because she deserves that much.] You were their only child?
