Jack can very rarely be found anywhere near the education centre (except when he's visiting Ianto in the library) but the more he thinks about his disc today, the more he wants to just watch it over and over again. So he's found himself a nice small classroom with a projector where he can watch his video of his time with the Doctor over and over again on a big screen. It's not as good as the holograms of his own time, but it's the best he can find short of hijacking the movie theatre.

Feel free to come across him watching it. He'll look happy at some parts, and devastated at others. Take your pick!

(His movie starts with the latter part of this, and then encompasses most of this, ending with his death by Dalek and him waking to hear the TARDIS departing without him.)

[Kitty manages to pass by during one of the devastating bits. The flickering light catches her attention and she phases through the door when she notices Jack inside. Her eyes move to the man and not the memories.]

Hey. [Gently.]

He's right at the end of the vid, watching himself face down the Daleks, terrified but determined, about to die his first ever death. And then watching himself wake up with a gasp, the brief moment of bewildered elation before he heard the sound of the TARDIS dematerialising. It's almost a century and a half ago for him, but he doesn't think he'll ever forget the way his heart pounded in his ears as he raced back to the Doctor, only to see the TARDIS fade away before his eyes. And watching this has only brought it back even more clearly.

The sound of Kitty's voice makes him jump. He hadn't heard the door open (of course). He swallows, and turns his head, blinking away tears.]
Hey.

[The video reaches the end and starts playing again from the beginning, his first sight of Rose, hanging in mid air from a barrage balloon in the middle of the London Blitz.]

((OOC: The first few seconds of this are the best I could find of this!))

[Her heart jumps a little seeing him crying and she makes up for that hug in Tyki's body pretty quickly by squeezing herself onto his chair, half on his lap and giving him a hug.

She could see the bots shooting him. She's not sure what it was about that death that brought this on, but she doesn't ask questions yet.]

[He's not quite expecting the lapful of Kitty and it makes him laugh a little in surprise. But after a moment he's hugging her back - not fiercely, not that tight, because this is after all an old pain, but definitely appreciating the contact, and the fact that this time she doesn't look and feel and smell like Tyki.

He dips his head against her shoulder and for once doesn't say anything, just sits quietly, listening to his first meeting with Rose, with an ache of longing for the people they were then, with so much more to come.]

[Okay, maybe it was overkill. But the tears caught her off guard and got her all protective of his heart. Shut up. She watches some of his life up on the screen as she holds him. She remembers Rose.]

You still have that beam of light thing?

[A little bit of overkill can be good sometimes. It's nice to be reminded how much people care about him, especially when he's a little vulnerable, like now. He doesn't move, keeping his forehead resting against her shoulder, just listening.

And chuckling lightly at her question.]
Unfortunately no. That was a function of the Chula ship I'd stolen. It got blown up a day or two later. I thought I was going to go along with it, but the Doctor pulled me out just in the nick of time." He does move, then, to glance up at the screen. "That's him there. Big ears, with the leather jacket."

He was here for a little bit. I mean there was also "The Doctor" here and he looked different. I don't really understand it. [She plays with his hair a little. Silly dangerous pheremones.]

I didn't know that. [He makes a soft, contented sound at the fingers in his hair (he likes fingers in his hair, and leans his head sideways against her shoulder instead so he can watch the screen and still have the contact. He's more or less forgotten about the pheromones, for the moment.]

He regenerates. Literally changes every cell in his body and becomes a completely new man. The other version who was here - tall, skinny, floppy hair, brown suit and converses - that was the next regeneration after this one. But this was my Doctor. The one who saved me, taught me to do good.

[It's relaxing to do it too. And it's certainly more about comfort than anything else. It's just hard sometimes to not be a little affected.]

It was really brief. One of the joys of being here since almost opening day is that I get to have at least some passing familiarity with most everyone who has come through.

So, he's still him with a whole new body? And new fashion sense? [She should probably be focusing more on the emotions Jack is having, but it really is interesting.]

[Softly] It also means you're aware of everyone who's gone, too. [Losing people. Isn't that what they bonded over the other day, too?]

Yeah, very different fashion sense. It's weird, I saw him the other day too. At least, turns out I guess it wasn't actually him, but I thought it was at the time. It's like bits of my past keep on popping back.

I have some experience with the people you think are yours, but aren't really too. Basically anyone I've ever recognized.

[He gives her a tiny, rueful smile at that look. Even he's lost quite a few people here. Not enough to compete with those he'd lost before, but enough.]

Lots of faces you recognise, but not actually the people you think they are? There hasn't actually been anyone you knew before, here?

"Yo." Kanji will never actually admit he's glad Jack is back but deep down he is. He still doesn't know what to make of him but he seems okay and he feels bad for being kind of a dick to him last time they talked. He's here setting up for his next knitting class and can't help but notice the projector being played in the next room.

Eh, sometimes Jack needs someone to be a dick to him to stop him getting too cocky.

(Perhaps that's what Owen's function was in Torchwood?)

He glances round at the sound of Kanji's voice, and smiles. (He may look a little red-rimmed about the eyes when Kanji comes closer, but he's still capable of smiling too.) "Hey. How's it going? Those were some cool moves you broadcast this morning!"

"Yeah, that was... I dunno what that was." He runs a hand through his bleached hair, looking a little embarrassed. Seriously he has so many questions about that dancing video though. Namely why? Why are they dancing? This seems like something Rise might be responsible for, being an idol and all but who knows? "I spotted a year two badge on my school jacket so I guess it happens sometime next year. And that they didn't hold me back a grade so that's cool I guess."

"Very cool - well done for that," Jack smiles, and beckons him into the room properly. "Want to come and see my vid in return?" He gestures up at the screen, where a much younger Jack can be seen lounging with his feet up, being glared at by the Doctor.

His lips twitch. "This is me when I was young and stupid. That guy there, with the ears? He's the guy who turned my life around."

Kanji pulls up a chair, turning it around and sitting backwards in it so his arms are folded on the headrest. It's kinda weird, seeing moments from somebody else's life like this. It's different than looking at pictures where people know they're being taken. This is like somebody recording something private. It's kinda creepy. At least his was like a performance. This is just Jack hanging out.

"Yeah? What'd he do?" There's a lot less surliness today than there was in their last conversation. Then again Jack isn't trying to be his dad today. Then again if he had a role model like this maybe it's why he was trying to reach out before. Who knows? Kanji isn't good at puzzling stuff like this out.

Jack is such an uninhibited person it hasn't even occurred to him that others might view something like this as private, or even slightly creepy. And at the moment, he wants to share this. There are so few people here who knew the Doctor (only Martha, really; Ianto doesn't really count) and no-one else who remembers this Doctor. He wants to share that - and with Kanji? Yeah, there's definitely an element of wanting to give back what the Doctor gave him.

"He called me on my shit, mostly," he says, with a wry glance at Kanji. "I was young and arrogant and making a mess of things, and he set me on the right track. I accidently almost wiped out the human race. He helped me see what I needed to do to save them, and then he saved me."

That kind of his home with some conversations he'd had with his senpai before coming here. About how he felt like no matter what he does he just makes a mess. Makes things harder for people in his life. His mom, mostly. It's hard, always being a screwup and not really knowing how to fix it. Mostly he just keeps doing the same stuff like get in fights and skipping school because he gets so pissed off by screwing everything up he just keeps letting it out by doing the same dumb things.

"Damn, that's some pretty heavy stuff. So you guys saved the world together?" Seems like the story doesn't just end there since the video is still going.

"More than once, actually, yeah. In 1941, 2005 and 200,100. Not to mention quite a few other places, as well. It's kind of what the Doctor does."

He nods up at the screen, where the initial friction between him and the Doctor is easy to see. "Even then, it took us a while to work out how we all worked best together. The Doctor and Rose were already a team and I was a bit of a third wheel for a while. But turned out, we each had our strengths. It was fabulous, for a little while."

"Man, conversations with you always make my head hurt." Time travel involves too much math for Kanji's comfort. Even trying to think about how those years fit in relationship to each other is giving him the sort of frustrated headache that usually makes him quit studying and eat some animal crackers instead.

"I get that. Sometimes you gotta learn to work as a team. So what happened? You said for a little while." Why end a good friendship?

Jack chuckles warmly. He can barely remember what it was like not being used to time-travel, though he knows he found it confusing at first too.

Then the smile fades as up there on the screen the vid shows him making his goodbyes to Rose and the Doctor. "I died." Right on cue, there's a shot of him facing down the Daleks and an extermination that still makes him wince, even after all this time. "And Rose brought me back, but as an abomination in the Doctor's eyes. He couldn't stand to be around me, so he left. Abandoned me on a dead space station, hundreds of thousands of years out of my own time, or Rose's. And that was that. Almost a century and a half until I managed to hook up with him again and find out what actually happened."

"Fuck that guy," Kanji's got that same determined, stubborn look on his face that he always wears when he's not going to back down on something. Because despite his academic limitations he does know what abomination means, okay? And he doesn't take it well when people get singled out for being different. It's personal, sure, but it's the reason he always has Naoto's back at home and even the reason he got pissed about that Mitsuo guy getting plastered all over the news as a suspect in the murder case. Not 'cause he wasn't guilty but because the first thing people do with shit like that is start prying into crap like yearbook quotes and online comments just looking for an excuse to write them off as another one of the weird kids like that explains everything.

"People who look for a reason to make other people feel different and left out can get bent!" It's probably not the reaction Jack has to the video but it's Kanji's takeaway from it all.

He expected sympathy, but not such a full-on, wholehearted reaction as that. He stifles down his own instinctive reaction, which is to defend the Doctor, even know, and instead turns his body to face Kanji a bit more.

"Hey, hey, it's okay, long time ago, water under the bridge and all that," he says gently, even though it's fairly obvious from his face that he's not quite as over it as he'd like to be. "Where's all this coming from, Kanji?"
