307 - Career day mingle
[ Career day has come to Marina and Sector 0 is abuzz with activity! Booths have been erected, some of them with information about the existing establishments, some of them empty for inmates to man if they feel like advertising their business and one dedicated to the process of starting something completely new. Each establishment comes with its own information poster about career opportunities, but they all follow the same basic principle:

Restaurants, bars and cafés — Waiter, dishwasher, cook, bartender, cleaning and maintenance staff.
Shops and stores — shop clerk, stock assistant, cleaning and maintenance staff.
Hospital — Cleaning and maintenance staff
Athletic Center — cleaning and maintenance staff. Cleaning staff for the horse stable need to be vetted before employed.
Prison maintenance — cleaning and maintenance staff, gardening.

While the career day is mostly geared towards commercial establishments, there's also space reserved for the school and defence force. Bots will be readily available to answer questions and streamline the application process for inmates that wish to take over or start a new establishment. ]

((ooc: The career day has begun! Mingle and be merry! More information can be found on the event post, which is also where you should direct your questions! ))

Glow-in-the-dark potatoes would be useful. You don't know how often I get up in the middle of the night and can't find my french fries.

[Teasing aside, she likes this idea.]

This is a problem that plagues us even in the twenty-third century.

Are you, by any chance, the interested party?

I might be. But I'm more into tech specifically. [Actually, she's pretty interested in physics too, but...] Never actually went to college or finished high school though. [Didn't make her less of a genius, but it did give her less education even if at 13 she was almost done with high school and looking into early college options when everything went sideways.] If that's a problem.

I'm also into this, although my familiarity with the technology here is... less complete than I would like to admit. But no matter; I would like to work with you, regardless of your level of formal education.

I've worked with it in here for awhile. The stuff we saw in the real facility was a little different. [They like to keep that learning curve high, don't they?]

So, how are you thinking we should go about deciding what we science first? [It's a verb now.]

I thought as much. If it was familiar, you may have been less inclined to kick it into submission.

Okay--first, we should determine what needs to be improved. Small problems that are easier to solve than, say, escaping this universe. Maybe modifications could be made to existing communication systems to make them more versatile or more secure. Maybe there are nonlethal weapons we could develop for self defense. You know more about what Marina's lacking than I do; you have ideas, surely.

Never underestimate just kicking things.

And I've had some ideas. They were a little more focused... [Is this a good time to bring up her evil ex?] Lacus—when she was here—actually made some stun guns out of camera shells.

Kicking isn't a very scientific approach.

[When isn't a good time to bring up the evil ex?]

Yes, good, I like focused ideas. [In part because he's the opposite of focused when there aren't any clear goals.] Are there many of these guns still in use? Are they relatively harmless? The wardens may frown upon stun guns that cause permanent neural damage.

Even if it's peer-reviewed and double blind kicking?

[During a make out session?]

I'm actually not sure who still has them, but yeah, they were supposed to be pretty harmless. Results may vary. It's not like we're all working with the same genetics here.

Peer-reviewed kicking, maybe.

[Adding in the making out might compromise the procedural validity. It's worth a try anyway!]

It's a good beginning. It would be better if there was a way to test the effectiveness of such a weapon reliably and morally, but nothing is perfect.

We have a guy who can't stay dead, but testing it on him probably still isn't very moral.
