307 - Career day mingle
[ Career day has come to Marina and Sector 0 is abuzz with activity! Booths have been erected, some of them with information about the existing establishments, some of them empty for inmates to man if they feel like advertising their business and one dedicated to the process of starting something completely new. Each establishment comes with its own information poster about career opportunities, but they all follow the same basic principle:

Restaurants, bars and cafés — Waiter, dishwasher, cook, bartender, cleaning and maintenance staff.
Shops and stores — shop clerk, stock assistant, cleaning and maintenance staff.
Hospital — Cleaning and maintenance staff
Athletic Center — cleaning and maintenance staff. Cleaning staff for the horse stable need to be vetted before employed.
Prison maintenance — cleaning and maintenance staff, gardening.

While the career day is mostly geared towards commercial establishments, there's also space reserved for the school and defence force. Bots will be readily available to answer questions and streamline the application process for inmates that wish to take over or start a new establishment. ]

((ooc: The career day has begun! Mingle and be merry! More information can be found on the event post, which is also where you should direct your questions! ))

That's good. The points. But if it's slow, why are you asking for help?

[She shrugs at his question.]

Same as usual. Reading. Drawing. Daydreaming. And I go to the pet store sometimes and look at the animals.

Give me more time to work on some hobbies, I guess. Plus, it'll be nice to have some back up if something happens. Someone to take over if I suddenly disappear like what happened to PM.

[It was an odd thought, but it had crossed his mind.]

Have you thought about picking one as a pet?

True. If you disappeared and no one was there, would the bots do it? Or would they shut it down.

[She shakes her head then.]

I've thought about it, but not yet. I had a dog at home and, while I loved him, it was a lot of work. And my parents even helped!

I think the bots would do it. When PM first disappeared, the bots ran the place until I took over. But, still... it kind of ruins the whole personal attention thing to have a bot deliver the mail and welcome baskets.

[He smiled a bit.]

I thought about it, too, but I've never had a pet before. I moved around a lot.

This is true. But then, I was never home for the mail man. The letters just sat on the table. When I got any.

[She cocks her head.]

Really? What was that like? I've stayed in one place all my life. Until here of course.

I'm just that good. [He smirked.]

It's okay. I mean, it would be nice to have a place to settle down and call home, but I start to get restless after a while. I don't know that I every could settle down in one spot.

You can't be that much older than me. Don't you just live wherever your parents do? [Even after all the various stories she's learning about people, Sarah's still not tactful enough to realize that not everyone has a decent home life.]

[He laughed, though it sounded a bit flat, and then looked to one side so he didn't have to meet her eyes.]

Nah. It doesn't work like that for me. I've been on my own for as long as I can remember.

[Mostly... he did spend that year at the church, but he wasn't up to delving into details.]

Oh... I'm... sorry.

[Sarah was learning that not everyone was like her here. That was perhaps the wrong way of putting it. She always knew people weren't like her, but here it was most apparent.]

My mom walked out on us when I was little. Not the same thing... but you know...

Nah, it's okay. It's not like you knew or anything.

[He shrugged.]

I don't exactly wear a sign around my neck.

True... [He shrugged.]

But, hey... don't worry about it. There's other stuff to talk about. [Because dodging the issue was so much healthier.]

[He thought about it.]

Yeah. Most of my drawings relate to little projects I'm working on, but it's kinda relaxing.

What about you?

I started learning when I got here. It's been really interesting! I think I'm going to paint a mural in my apartment soon.

Cool. I haven't done any painting... just sketches and stuff. Are you taking the class or just learning on your own?

I am. The class. But it's not like your typical class. Or at least... maybe I don't know much about art classes. There's a lot of freedom. And I spend a lot of time practicing.

Well, that sounds fun. A lot less like school, if you ask me. I never really liked school.

Maybe you'll show me what you've done so far sometime.

No? Well, yeah... there's all the other kids who are pretty awful. But classes themselves are interesting. Usually.

[She smile shyly.]

Maybe.

I think I should go though. There's other stuff to do... and I don't want another one of those things to come back.
