Day 300 - Evening Anniversary Mingle
The festival continues. The dome's "sun" begins to set and the the sky is painted in gradually darkening shades until all is dark beyond the warm glow of the lanterns and sparkling of the colored lights on the rides and booths.

The speakers high above on the floating island begin to play soft, instrumental music and the dark dome flickers to life once more as projections of landscapes light the sky. They fade in and out every few minutes with images of cityscapes, deserts, seasides, mountain ranges in shades of futuristic, ancient, post-apocalyptic, foreign, and outer space. It may seem like a random assortment at first, but then the scene shifts again and just might take your breath away as you recognize what you're seeing. No people. No animals. But the landmarks are all there. It's a place you grew up or lived or worked or fought for or died at, and then it's gone again, fading into someone else's memory. Sometimes the scene is distinctly autumn-themed. Sometimes it isn't.

After an hour or so the scene shows another sunset and the sky goes dark aside from the sparkling of a starscape. New lanterns are lit leading a path to the beach where there's a large white open-style tent with a dance floor, the ceiling strewn with fairy lights. Flames light the fire pits and there are several cozy resting areas set up with plush cushions and thick candles half-buried in the sand for light. The music takes on more variety and life, perfectly suitable to dancing. Refreshments are available for those who've yet had their fill or simply need a moment to cool off away from the dance floor for a moment.

[MarinaNova is putting on quite a show. As soon as the artificial sunlight dims and the projections begin, Chekov flops on the ground--sufficiently out of the way so as to not be underfoot, thank you--to observe. Anything that's important enough to put in the sky is important enough to pay attention to, yes?

Saint Petersburg, Taganrog, the view of Earth from the Luna colony, Starfleet Academy, the corridors of the Enterprise, the expansive house he occupied when he was in the City... they're all there, static pictures projected on the dome--every place Chekov has ever called home. It's nice to see familiar places, even those that he knows he will never revisit. There are memories attached to all of them, good and bad alike, and Pavel has developed a talent for visiting memories without being mired down by the emotions associated with them.

He's having a fine time until the dome shows a starscape: the sky as seen from Earth's northern hemisphere during the autumn months. It's simultaneously achingly familiar and unsettlingly foreign. He knows the major constellations and stars--has trivial information about all of them stored away--but his memory of the whole is gone. One particularly harrowing event in the City had necessitated personal sacrifice, and Chekov had given up his memories of Earth's night sky. Since such knowledge isn't called upon every day, he can sometimes forget about what is no longer in his head. With what was erased right in front of him, forgetting is impossible.

By the time the projections fade into an alien starscape, Chekov is in a contemplative mood that lends itself to sitting on the beach rather than dancing.]

There you are. [Korra plunks down on the ground next to him.] I've been looking all over for you.

Sorry. Hiding was not my intention. [He sighs in that unnecessarily dramatic way that usually indicates either profound boredom or actual emotional turmoil that he doesn't feel like poking at the moment.] This is a strange time for a party.

Is it? Parties make good distractions. There's a lot to distract us from.

I think it will take more than a party to distract anyone. [He rolls onto his stomach and props himself up with his elbows, smiling dully.] Are you distracted, Korra?

Not the way they want.

[She wraps her arms around her knees.]

What are we going to do?

It would be simplest for us to do nothing and accept that we are captives.

Is that what you plan on doing? Giving up?

Of course not. I would never take the simplest option. [His tone is light enough, but he's being quite serious.] With that said, I have no plans. How do we leave a cage that has trapped our minds?

And hope that, once we determined how it happened, we can replicate the scenario. [He sighs.] I'm fortunate in that I'm in no hurry to escape and I like the company here.

I guess. [Korra's glad to have Chekov, and there are some other nice people here... but she misses Jinora and Hei and Naga. She hadn't felt trapped in the City because she thought her world didn't need her. Now that she's gotten over that, there's a cruel irony to her being trapped somewhere else.]

[He can't help but notice that Korra is most definitely not pleased to be here.] What has changed, Korra? You were reluctant to return home before.

Not by the end. I was read to go back. I was ready to be the Avatar again. Besides, there are people I miss.

I promise I will find a way for you to go home. [He sounds very certain.] But home may not be an easy place to be, either. Wherever you go, you will always have someone to miss.
