Day 292 — Octonado mingle!
[Thunderbolt and lightning—very, very frightening.

Take cover, take shelter, take heart. You'll need to take everything you can just to make it through today with so few areas really being safe.]

(OOC: DETAILS here. Mingle out and about in the rapidly changing elements or cozy in one of the shelters.)

Sarah follows as best she can with buffets of wind blowing her one way or another. Her hair isn't much of a help. And she's cold and miserable.

The wind picks up and suddenly she realizes she can't see him through the driving rain. "Carl? CARL!" God she hopes he hears her.

Carl is having the same problem with the wind. He really can't see where he is going. He's trying to keep his hat from blowing off his head as he goes. He can't lose it.

Suddenly hearing her calling his name, faint in the current roar of the wind, he turns around to see if he can see her. The rain has picked up so much that he realizes he can't see her. "Sarah?"

Having to make a quick decision about three different things, he drops the bat and reaches out to try and grab her arm.

It takes a few tries of blindly trying to find her, but manages to grab her arm. "I'm here. We'll get there."

At least he hopes so. It's hard to see where they are at the moment.

Something reaches out to grab her, and Sarah almost fights it before realizing it's his hand. Relieved, Sarah grasps his hand in hers, the gravity of the situation keeping all awkward thoughts far from her mind. If they stick together, it'll be OK. She hopes.

She nods blindly and starts walking with him. It seems to take ages before they finally find a door. "Oh thank goodness," she cries, rushing in and pulling him along. She turns to hug him. "Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

And then she remembers she's wet, and cold, and now hugging a boy. Sarah steps back blushing. "I thought I was gone."

He holds her hand tight as he keeps his hat on his head so it doesn't blow away in the wind. Finally though, a door! Even if it isn't the Education Center it is better than standing in the wind and getting blown down.

They both rush inside and he has just enough time to shut the door behind him before she suddenly hugs him. He's definitely surprised by that he can't keep that from his face.

"It's not a problem. We've got to stick together right?"

He looks around now. It does look like the Education Center at least. They had made it.

Oh he's surprised. She shouldn't have hugged him. It was really stupid.

"Right. Together." Sarah wanders over to a window and looks out. "I hope it doesn't last all day. ... And I hope everyone else got somewhere safe."

Mostly, Sarah wishes she were more help than she was. Sure she could make signs for people, or... actually, she was pretty useless.

It was mostly that he'd never really had a girl hug him before. His group had been largely devoid of girls around his age since Sophia.

"I hope it doesn't either," he says as he joins her in looking out the window. I'm sure if people were smart they'd have gone somewhere safe."

He debates going back out there to see if he can try and find anyone else, but when he can't even see a few feet from the building, that wasn't smart.

He goes and cracks the door slightly to see if he can hear anyone outside. All he can really hear is the wind as it blows his hat off so he closes the door again.

"Well, that's not happening."

Sarah picks up the hat and brushes it off. "No I think inside is best. We can listen for distress calls and go help then if it's needed."

Except she wouldn't be much help. This bothers her. She hands his hat back to Carl.

"Where did you get the hat?"

"I was trying to see if I could hear anything but all I got was the wind."

He takes the hat back from her.

"It's my dad's. He gave it to me when this first happened. I had it with me when I came here."

"You mean the walkers?" she asked bluntly. "I'm glad you got to keep something from home. I hope you see him again."

She chews her lip a moment before asking her next question.

"Are... are you really good at defending yourself then? And other people?"

"Yes, the walkers." He looks at the hat for a moment before he puts it back on. "It's the only thing I have from him."

He's not sure what he would do if it had been taken from him.

"I am. I've killed walkers before to protect our group."

Sarah's brow furrows as she tries to figure out what she wants to ask.

"And... you're good at helping in emergencies and things? Because... I'm not. I'm... rather helpless. I was able to get through the Labyrinth... but that was different. I don't think Jareth ever wanted me dead. Just out of his way. But when things go wrong here... I usually need saving. And I'm tired of being useless. Do you think you could help me?"

He waits patiently for her to ask her question. It did seem like it was rather important.

He doesn't even really have to think about it when she asks.

"Sure I can help you. Everyone needs to know how to protect themselves, no matter what it might be."

Sarah fairly beams. "Oh thank you. That... thank you so much. I can... well, I can run. And read. And I keep thinking that I could be like one of the knights or something, but I think I turn out too much like the damsel in distress. And I don't want to be the damsel in distress."

Stop babbling Sarah.

Wow, that is a lot of babbling.

"It's no problem. Like I said, everyone should be able to defend themselves."

Maybe he can ask Carol for some ideas. She had been teaching the kids back at the prison to defend themselves.

Sarah bites her lip to keep from babbling more and nods. Finally she looks around them.

"Want to see the art room?"

"Sure, we can go see that. Any of your drawings there?"

He remembered that she had been working on something the day he officially arrived.

Sarah nods. "There's one... Rudy put out a closed box and we had to draw whatever we thought was in the box." She doesn't tell him she drew a fairy.

It was one of her earliest pieces... but someone had convinced her to keep it in the room. She led him down a hallway and through a door to reveal easels and various art supplies.

He followed after her, just a few steps behind, listening to what she said. As they walked into the art room, he did look around at everything that was in there. He hadn't been in there yet.

"That's an interesting idea."

"It was! I think he wanted it to be something... I was going to say real, but I've seen fairies before. Just... no one else thinks they're real."

She stops in front of her charcoal fairy. It's not the greatest of her work. Her fairies especially are much better.

"Fairies?" He studies the fairy in picture. First instinct is tell her that they don't exist, that they are made up. But she'd already told him about other things. And walkers didn't exist where she was (what was good for everybody).

"They're just a story where I'm from."

Okay, so something between acceptance and saying they didn't exist.

"Mine too. I don't think the Labyrinth is part of my world. It just doesn't make sense. Or maybe it's a part of the fairy world... but I know I've seen them in the Labyrinth."

She shrugs. "They're not really that nice. One bit me."

"One bit you?" He turns to look at her at this. And of course the thought of 'at least it wasn't a walker' crossed his mind.

"So they are... dangerous?"

Sarah shakes her head. "I don't think so. I mean... it was like a bug bite. And I had picked it up."

She looks over some of the other paintings. "I'm fairly certain that they don't really care about people. Hoggle was treating them like pests."

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]anothermonster

"Huh... If they are biting, then it sounds like either they are hungry or you are as much a pest to them as they are to you."

That was really the two options he could think of. What options could there really be?

He starts looking at other paintings as well.

"Who is Hoggle?"

"Maybe. I think they would have left me alone if I had left them alone. Like other animals. Most of them don't attack unless they feel threatened.

Hoggle? He's my friend. I think. He's the dwarf who guards the entrance to the Labyrinth. He's helped me out a few times. But bad things seem to happen around him too."
