Day 268 — Body Swap Mingle
[You know the phrase about waking up on the wrong side of the bed? Well, today you wake up exactly where you planned to, just not how you planned to. Taller, blonder, now with dangerous and unpredictable powers? So maybe the phrase about not feeling comfortable in your own skin applies more today. After all, it's not exactly your skin is it?]

[Jack, unfortunately, has found himself in a vampire’s body and since he doesn’t know how long it’s going to last, he’s decided he’s going to need blood. And since he doesn’t really know many of the vampires here apart from Spike, who he’s not going to ask about this out of principle, he heads for the most obvious place to get blood: the Blood Shack.

He checks somewhat at the sight of Rose in there, especially knowing who he currently looks like, but the desire for blood is getting strong enough that he doesn’t think he can ignore it much longer, and he’d rather get it from a bottle than end up savaging some poor innocent person just because they smell too good.

So he takes a breath and heads up to Rose, with a slightly awkward smile.]

Care to recommend a blood type to someone who’s not used to all this?

[It doesn’t occur to him that she might not know yet that he and Spike have swapped bodies.]

[It wasn't like Spike to be so awkward so Rose wondered what had prompted it in the first place. She had gone to the Blood Shack to get away from the apartment for a little while and collect her thoughts. Spike being here wouldn't help with that but she wasn't going to ignore him.]

What? [She looks confused.] What are you going on about, Spike? You're plenty used to this.

He hasn't told you, huh? [He just assumed they woke up together the way he and Ianto did, but obviously not!]

I'm not Spike. I'm Jack. He's got my body, I've got his. It's a huge great fucking mess.

I didn't see him this morning. [That was all she was going to say about it. Jack wasn't privy to their relationship.]

This is the Warden's doing then? [She gestures to him with a hand, internally sighing.] You must have given Ianto quite the scare.

You could say that. [Very dry. Being pushed out of bed and having a stake brandished in his face isn't his favourite way of being woken up.]

And yeah, I'm guessing this is the wardens' idea of a great big laugh. Or possibly they think it's karma. I haven't quite decided yet.

Perhaps the wardens thought you both needed to see how the other half lived by swapping your bodies. They could have chosen others, but they didn't.

Yeah. I'm starving. At least, I assume that's what it is. Surprisingly, in all my research, I haven't really come across much information about how frequently vampires need to eat. But I'm assuming this thing I'm feeling that feels like a mix between hunger and lust is a need for blood?

In my experience, it depends on the level of control that you have. I eat a few times a day but I can subdue the cravings by drinking coffee. Go figure.

[Spike was different to her in so many ways and Rose assumed it was the same for all the vampires from his world.]

But yeah, that's an accurate way to describe how you're feeling. You'll need to have blood and soon.

[She turns around to the bar to ask for some synthetic blood for the two of them. Then Rose looks back at him.]

It's weird. Seeing you like this.

Oh yeah, coffee, I remember you told me about that. Or someone did. [Possibly Rebekah, not her. He cocks his head.] Strangely, this is the first day in forever that I haven't had coffee cravings. Though I'd hasten to add that I'd rather be ordering coffee right now!

[Eyeing the bottles that are being retrieved from the fridge with a mixture of trepidation (him) and want (the demon), and then quirking a grin at Rose's comment.]

You're telling me! It feels weird! Even without the vampire thing, Spike's so short. It's like my whole world view has changed!

He's not short. There's not much height difference between you both at all.

[She feels insulted on her boyfriend's behalf. Rose gives him a look before handing one of the bottles to him.]

Coffee doesn't work like that for Spike as there are a lot of differences between the vampires of my world and his world. It's interesting, but I won't go into any details about it.

Now drink up.

Three or four inches feels like a lot when you're not used to it. Seriously - everything looks different!

[He eyes the proferred bottle again, then swallows and takes it. At least it's not real blood. Though the demon seems pretty excited anyway.]

Huh. Actually doesn't taste that bad. [Which will be because he's inhabiting a vampire's body, of course.]

It's not the worst. [She agrees, taking a sip from her own bottle.]

Does what it is supposed to do. [Which is to satisfy their hunger. But it was nothing to the taste of bagged blood. Fresh blood was even better.]

If you still feel hungry after that one, we can always get you another.

[Yeah, as he slowly starts to drink, he realises that the ‘not too bad’ is the demon’s opinion as much as his own. The demon would clearly prefer some proper blood, but he really doesn’t fancy the idea, so this is all the demon’s getting. Even so, as he starts to drink it, it obviously has the same effect on him as real blood would.

Which is to bring the demon out, his brow protruding and fangs popping out, eyes flashing gold, as it tastes blood – even synthetic.]

Fuck. Sorry. [Giving Rose a helpless look.] Any tips on how to control this?

[It doesn't surprise Rose to see the demon coming out of him. He wasn't used to the body nor how it would react to certain things. Spike had control, Jack didn't.]

No need to say sorry, Jack. I'm fine with it. [Of course she prefer it if Spike was the real person behind the face but details.]

I don't know how Spike does it but maybe thinking about anything other than blood will help.

[Well, of course she wouldn't have a problem with this face. Stupid of him to think she might. She's a vampire herself, and used to it, even if her own physiology doesn't work the same way.]

Hard to think about anything other than blood whilst drinking the stuff.

[Dryly, before he goes back to drinking, thinking that at least the sooner he gets this over with, the sooner he has some chance of putting the demon away again.

When he's finished the bottle off, he sets it down and wipes his mouth, and looks back at Rose.] It's different for you, isn't it? You're more... one entity, rather than two conflicting ones?

Hmph.

[Is all that Rose has to say to him on that. She's annoyed that Jack is in there instead of Spike but she can't let his body starve.

Rose watches in silence as he drinks the bottle, sipping from her own on occasion. Hopefully the body swap will only last a day and even that was long enough.]

The demon still resides in me but I've learned to control it. I know what I am but that doesn't mean I accept it all of the time. So I suppose it is both- one entity, but with conflict.

[One day in Spike's body will certainly be enough for Jack, too, even if he is finding it quite useful in an information-gathering capacity. He wonders briefly if he might have managed to pump more information out of Rose if he'd pretended to actually be Spike, but he knows he couldn't have pulled that off. Easier to pull off the other way round - Spike has at least actually been human - but there are far too many new things here for him.]

I guess we all have trouble accepting what we are all the time. [Agreeing, wryly. And then cocking his head, curious.] Do you mean sometimes you don't accept you're a vampire?

Yeah. I've hurt people and I regret doing it. [Honesty. It wasn't always easy for her to admit to something like that, if at all.] I'm sure that you have regrets. Like everyone.

[Has he killed like her? Rose doesn't know and she hasn't really felt the need to ask him. She's struggled with her instincts for most of her life since she was turned and it's been a difficult journey.]

[And yes, sorry Rose, he knows it must be as hard for her as it is for him, talking about Spike while he's wearing Spike's body. On the other hand, what an unrivalled chance to finally learn some of the things he's been trying to find out!]

Probably. I haven't really asked him about it before.

[There was no way in hell she was going to tell Jack such personal details about Spike, no matter how much he pressed for information. Apart from that, there were still things about him that even she didn't know.]

[Oh, he's interested in her too - especially if Spike's regrets or lack thereof really aren't something that bothers her. Despite that, though, he needs to keep her on side here, so he turns on the charm, which actually isn't that hard even in Spike's body because, even if Spike doesn't do it that often, he's had plenty of experience watching John Hart use his charm and they really are incredibly similar.]

I'm sorry, were you feeling left out? [He leans against the bar and gives her his full attention with a small smile, and a glimmer in his eye.] So tell me about your kind of vampire, Rose. You... manage to live alongside the humans relatively peacefully, right?

Maybe a little. [She can easily turn the charm on Jack to throw him off. Well, hopefully.]

For the most part, yes. It depends on the individual vampire and their level of control. Not everyone knows that we exist though.

So what affects your level of control? Is it natural, something you get from your sire? Or is it down to how much you want to be in control?

It's got nothing to do with our sires. Completely down to the vampires themselves. [Her sire pretty much left her on her own when she was turned.]

Most of the time I don't think they give a damn about us.
