day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[ Bak had made a promise and he meant to keep it! And if that meant spending time with the common folk, well... he actually didn't mind at all. He was just lucky he managed to find the park despite the map and hand written directions.

fjdkskal He was a man who could never learn.

Sneaking in late to the party, he grabbed a plate and began to shuffle his way through the food line, careful to take just a little bit of most things. If it looked questionable, well... he most likely didn't take it. Which means his plate is piled high with fruit and chips and dip and cauliflower. And maybe one or two carrot sticks, ahem, now where was he?

Snapping a carrot between his teeth, he munched and speculated and yes, he is speaking with his mouth half full. ]
Looks like most spots are taken, hm... Guess I'll just have to find someplace else to sit.

[ and so he turned and, well... that's up to you. With luck, however, he managed to salvage the food. ]

[Lightning fast reflexes come in handy at times like this.]

Woah!

[Just a half a second slower and Zero would have found himself covered in food. Instead, just as Bak is turning into him, Zero gets a hand on the plate and keeps the entire pile of food from tumbling to the ground.]

Uh. I think this is yours?

[He's holding out your plate to you.]

[ Bak flustered and immediately reached for his wayward plate ]

I... yes, that's mine! Sorry you had to take that.

[ and if he fumbled, well... he can be excused, but at least he's reaching for it with both hands, not one! He knows full well what danger he is in... ]

[He doesn't know Bak well at all, but it's hard to miss his weird behavior right now.]

Uh...are you all right?

[He lets him take the plate, watching the man curiously.]

[ It's not weird! It's just, um... a peculiar tic of his. ]

Of course I'm fine. [ he frowned and then glanced down at his hands ] Do I look like I'm not all right?

[ no ungainly blotches, no bright flushing face? He may startle easy, but he could hardly foster contacts looking like death warmed over! Or, you know, like he has a bad case of the measles. ]

I was thinking more along the 'not injured' 'dropped food on myself in the process' sort of all right. You just seem...[How to put this delicately?] Flustered.

[ he immediately stopped and then frowned. ]

Of course I am. I know my body quite well.

[ he just has a tendency to faint frequently. He attributes it to getting a bit too immersed within his work. ]

Now if you'll excuse me, I should eat before this food starts to melt.

[ and if Zero does go sit by Yuuki, Bak may just faint indeed. From shock ]

[ he spun in a confused circle, looking towards where Sookie was pointing and trying not to hyperventilate at the casual contact. He was just a little startled! That was it! ]

Uh... where?

[ he blinked and then frowned. Did she want him to sit on the grass? Not that he's opposed, he is chinese, but he's wearing a white jacket. he should've thought of that before he came to a potluck ]

That's... that's very kind of you.

[ he watches helplessly as she takes care of all the things for him. ]

[Richie hasn't been sitting himself, enjoying standing around and mingling a little. There was so much less pressure here than there was in Squall where he constantly worried about turning his back to anyone. But with his trusty hoodie he was back to being comfortable again.

He spots Bak looking a bit awkward and holds up a spoon and waves it like a tiny hand.]

Yo! Did you ever finish looking into those kung fu movies?

[ Bak almost missed that little hand gesture but he couldn't miss the man speaking to him. Sliding over to the empty spot, he sat. ]

I've looked into a few.

[ he paused, taking care to place a napkin primly in his lap. It was a self conscious gesture because he was far more used to just eating on the fly and tucking napkins inside his shirt as needed.

But that was hardly the way to make a good first -- second impression. ]

They weren't terrible. [ he may (actually) have enjoyed a few. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon anyone? ]

[Richie wouldn't hold it again, seeing as he's not the cleanest eater himself. He and fully loaded chili dogs have a very deep, loving relationship.]

Cool, so how about trying another genre this time? If you've never seen kung fu movies before I'm betting there are plenty of others you haven't seen yet.

[Oh man, Richie is trying so hard not to laugh in Bak's face, but that is the most hilarious response he's ever gotten. He smiles widely still and manages not to snicker.]

It's called mastering the secret art of multi-tasking. Doing all the things you can at the same time conserves time while you're at it.

[ good thing he's still flabbergasted. he would take royal offense! ]

But what's the point of doing something if you aren't going to put your full attention into it? That defies reason.

[ unless, of course, you know. That's why man invented code to do all the work for them. ]

[A very good thing.]

You don't need to give your full attention to everything to do it. You can read and eat at the same time, right? It's all about knowing what things you can focus on at once and what things you can't. Movies are easy. You can put them on in the background and work on a lot of things.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]punching_bag

[ Bak shook his head in disbelief ]

Reading and eating are two entirely different things. The kind of work I do requires a much greater attention to detail. [ although, Richie may have a point. If he can manage to not screw up his work with Fou around, why can't he have a movie playing in the background? Explosions are nothing compared to her flying kicks! ]

Well, then don't watch movies while you're doing the sensitive stuff that you have to give 100% to if you think you can't handle it. Like I said, it's about knowing when you can and when you can't. [He shrugs and takes another quick bite off his plate.] But c'mon, I'm sure everything you do doesn't need you to stare at it every second.

[ Bak shoved his chip into his mouth and chewed, frustrated but not yet outdone. After a moment, he swallowed and then gestured with a fresh trip free of dip. It was safer that way. ]

Yes, but I thought the point of a movie is to watch it and if you're not going to watch it, why bother having it on in the background at all?

[ he shook his head ]

It doesn't make any sense!
