day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[ she's always be that - she simply can't be anything else, not with matt, not with herself. she sits next to him, her knees inclined towards his.

she pauses after listening to him; both concerned and wanting to know anything from him, about what's going on with him. caroline's right. it hasn't felt right these past few days, but not because it has felt like matt wasn't on their side. because it's felt like matt wasn't sure how to be.

elena pulls in a soft breath, looks into some spot on the ground to.
] Matt, whatever it is... you can always talk to me.

[ that's right on the money, exactly it: matt wasn't sure how to be. lying doesn't suit him. he had a hard time doing it when he was working in tandem with caroline's mom when he thought he was doing the right thing to help protect this town, when he was still scared shitless of this strange world that was suddenly more reality than it was fiction. it suits him even less when people know he's lying, because the immediate response is to fix the situation -- but in order to do that properly, he'd have to tell the truth. and matt can't handle telling the truth as much as he wants to save them from it.

he'd fall apart if he had to look elena in the eye and tell her that her brother's dead. he barely kept it together well enough to break down where nobody could see him shatter. ]

You can't tell Caroline. She'd go berserk if she found out that there was actually something to it. [ a laugh, because he's been saying "no" to all the accusations, but in reality... there is some sliver of truth to it. ] Last night... I almost--

[ he swallows hard, clears his throat, forces himself to just say it. ]

I almost slept with Rebekah last night.

[ her initial shock is apparent. quiet, but there. her eyes blink open wide. she's dumbfounded for a moment before her thoughts race to catch up to the actuality.

it's not what elena expected to hear. of course she didn't think it would be anything less than difficult and even worrying. for matt, at least; he's made his trouble clear. and she feels a flash of emotion she can't abate nor control; the concern. that could make her a hypocrite and she knows it. it's rebekah. but it's matt.

(and it's damon.)

and she understands, despite herself and against herself. she pulls in a steadying breath.
] What happened? [ it's a question that could be asking for so many answers. (it's not accusatory.) she seeks to specify it quickly. ] Between you two? Back home?

I messed up, Elena. [ he messed up. he blames skipping class and running off to the lake house on himself. he blames sleeing in after a long night of vampire drama and showing up to calculus late on himself. none of it is her fault, or jeremy's, even if rebekah had been right in saying that the only reason he wasn't passing was because he'd been so absorbed into that world that he had fallen behind on his actual life -- and unlike the rest of them, he couldn't just compel his teachers to overlook things. rebekah had offered to, but he'd refused. ] I missed a lot of classes and didn't turn in assignments, and-- I almost failed my senior year. I almost didn't graduate, but Rebekah helped me.

[ matt sits up straighter, holding out a hand to dismiss the obvious notion. ] Not by compelling anyone. She... helped me study for finals and get all the work I was missing done. Even sat in on Saturday school with me while I was making up hours. [ his hand falls back to his lap. ] I didn't really think much of it at the time, being that she kind of owed me for almost killing me, [ and actually killing elena ] but I guess I got a lot closer to her than I thought I did.

[ she's worried, hearing about how he's been failing. they've all struggled the past few years in school, to even get to school some days, but they've all tried so hard to study and get through. hearing that matt almost failed, that he fell behind? and why he wouldn't ask them for help?

(with everything that's happened, can she be surprised? she's not. losing vicki, paying the bills, dealing with all these supernatural life or death situations...

it's not how life was supposed to happen. not for her. not for matt. not for anyone. and she knows he doesn't want it, has taken the option to turn away from it.)

elena watches him, searches his expression, takes in his words. she believes him, that maybe rebekah could be that kind, that set on finding forgiveness and acceptance (that would be her motive, what she would want) and it's clear it all means something to him. could mean something to him.

getting closer to anyone does. she's unsure. it's rebekah and - it's matt.

elena's quiet a moment. she knows what she should say; what the truth is. (after everything, she still doesn't know if they can trust rebekah. what decides her is knowing matt doesn't want judgement, he needs a friend. understanding. and that she has, whether she feel secure in the idea of matt having feelings for rebekah and vice versa or not.)
] Matt, I... Rebekah and I have... we've been allies here, and she's not... entirely bad. And even if she was, what you're feeling isn't wrong, or bad.

It makes sense to be afraid of... what you're feeling. How you could feel it. To second guess yourself... and her, too. [ rebekah's dangerous. an original. she's terrorized them. worked with klaus, tried to kill them both... she once made those choices knowing the consequences. ]

She's been through a lot. More than we -- any of us -- have really thought about taking into account before. [ rebekah flipping out over alexander's ghost quite honestly scared him, because all of a sudden this girl who could snap him in half with her pinky if she wanted to was wilting at the mere sight of a man who's been dead since the 12th century. he didn't get the full story out of her, just that they were once a thing, and that the possibility of marriage was on the table, but it was clearly a traumatic experience for her. and the guy was a vampire hunter on top of it all. her reaction had been so alarming to the point that he hung back, stuck around -- longer than he should've, given how he ended up standing atop a bomb once alexander realized he could be used to screw with rebekah some more. it was only when his life was put in danger was rebekah able to collect herself and pull that mask back on.

honestly, he's been wondering just how much is that mask and how much is the girl beneath it. he's likely seen more of the latter than anyone has in a long, long time. ]

This is how you feel about Damon, isn't it? [ a bold question, one he likely wouldn't ask if he weren't suddenly able to see things from her point of view, to understand with a clarity he's not sure he wants what it's like to have feelings for someone you shouldn't. someone who's tried to kill you, who has killed other people and put you in danger countless times. ] Knowing you shouldn't, but having these feelings anyway. And not wanting to give them up, even if you know you should just bury it and move on with your life.

[ like closing the door when rebekah started to walk away. things could've ended at a vampire free summer and an assurance that they'd never work out. but something compelled him to keep that door open and take her up on that offer to get away and it wasn't just knowing that he needed to stop hiding in mystic falls and actually start living his life. ]

[ elena can believe that, that rebekah's been through more than they ever took into account. she knows some of the things rebekah's been through - her youngest brother's death, her mother's death, being daggered and undaggered for centuries, chased by her father.

(they had to take it all into account. she had to care to be able to stab her in the back.

it's only been recently it's been to care for her as an ally, if not a friend.)

elena's thoughts of rebekah, of matt feeling so about her, are jarred by the mention of damon. her eyes lift to him. it is a bold question and not one she expected. her lips part. she's never been so frank with matt about her feelings for damon, not that she knows or remembers or even suspects. (and he doesn't know about them now. is she so transparent or does he know something she doesn't remember?

she guesses any of her transparency doesn't matter, not anymore.)

he's right. that's exactly how she feels.

it takes her a moment. she presses her lips together.
] Yes. [ the word is said with conviction and honesty.

she blinks against the fake sun, the reflection of it against the water as she looks at matt.
] Matt, did... something happen between me and Damon?

[ for the first time, she considers if it did. she hadn't considered much it would or might purposefully, despite how strongly she's felt here. because she's felt so strongly.

her breath catches slightly in her throat; she realizes she both dreads and wants the answer 'yes.'

Then you get it. [ he'll leave it at that for now. as for damon, all he can bring himself to say is a vague ] It was his blood, Elena. [ that tells her everything, yet nothing at all. ]
