day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[ elena stops, virtually freezes reaching for a serving spoon. her eyes move up, straight, into the distance, and her breath shortens quietly on her inhale.

mostly she's thinking which one? how? jeremy could have died himself. and rebekah...

she sent jeremy away to avoid this. avoid killing and losing and pain. (she realizes she doesn't particularly like the idea of rebekah losing someone either. elena doesn't want anyone to die, to hurt, but there's a part of her who thinks it's good he's dead, whichever one he is. she would be for anyone with the exception of elijah.)

her indifferent mask slips some; she scoops some fruit onto her plate.

saying 'i'm sorry' would be dishonest and impersonal. asking 'which brother?' would be too. (she is sorry and she's not enough to need to know, and because elijah... because she does want to know; she cares.)
] I sent Jeremy away because I didn't want him to have to hurt anyone, hurt himself. So I could protect him and he could live a normal life.

[ she has tears to shed, but she doesn't welcome them. the confession is as calculated as it is sincere - she gets it. but so does elena have her own reasons for not mentioning things too.

and for mentioning them.

[Rebekah can appreciate that Elena doesn't offer condolences when she doesn't mean them. It's preferable to fake sympathy to be certain.

She can't help but shrug her shoulders a little at Elena's words. She remembers hearing from Niklaus about how Damon and Elena were using Jeremy to try to track down where their sire line came from -- and how Kol had tried to stop them then.
]

It didn't last, apparently.

[Nothing ever does.]

[ funnily enough that's what she told damon yesterday. apparently he came back.

protecting him didn't last, because it couldn't. she can't protect jeremy always, or even well sometimes, when she can.
]

Who did he kill? [ the question is asked quietly. for her and for rebekah. ]

Kol. [ It's said simply even though it's not simple at all. It's one of the most difficult of the new memories for Rebekah to process, the one she's been trying to avoid the most. Because the night before Kol had held the white oak dagger to her chest -- might have actually done it if Nik hadn't intervened.

He tried to kill her.

But that doesn't mean she wanted him dead. It's complicated.

[ she sucks in a breath. not elijah. she wouldn't know why jeremy would kill him, why any of them would want to. she feels relief - and indifference that it was kol.

and that feeling is instantly followed by a mix of warring emotions about how she shouldn't, about rebekah and how it must feel to -

she doesn't know. she never wants to know. there are tears warming in her eyes. she abruptly reaches for a serving of some plate she's not paying attention to.
] I used to hate when people said that they were sorry. [ she looks rebekah's way. after her parents died, that's all anyone said.

she's not sorry, but she cares. understands. however much she can.

It's not the first time I've lost a brother.

[There was Finn -- a loss Elena wouldn't know about and then of course, Elena's heard about the story of Henrik, her younger brother. His death is what started everything, the catalyst to her parents turning she and her brothers into the monsters they were now.

Finn had been in a box for nine hundred years, him dying didn't ultimately change much, as callous as that sounds. But Kol? It's different. It doesn't ache the way things did when she thought Niklaus died. But that was before Nik disowned her, before Elijah abandoned her, before Kol himself held a stake to her chest (she pulled the dagger first though, a part of her knows she deserved it).

She doesn't mention running into Kol's ghost, how he had mocked her for how little she had mourned him (she had compartmentalized it in her search for the cure, it had been easier that way). She doesn't mention a lot of things because some things aren't for Elena or anyone else to know.
