day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[Calliope flinches at the pause, but still smiles through her discomfort.]

Everyone has their moments, and I contributed every bit as much—not to fret. [She folds up the soaked napkin and tries to set it somewhere unobtrusive.]

It's only water.

I should know better by now than to be so careless near things that can be spilled, knocked over, or broken.

[Miranda doesn't know where to throw the ones she's collected either.] Heheh...oh dear where might the wastebasket be? [Oh look it's at the end of the table.]

Here I'll take that. This truly was my own fault. [She reaches for the wet napkin Calliope had been holding.]

[Calliope hands it over, feeling very sheepish and self-conscious. It is like a black hole of awkward, and she is slowly being sucked toward the event horizon. She makes an effort to steer this into a real social interaction.]

Ummm. Thanks.

So, what's your favorite dish here? [Jarring attempts at changing the subject.]

Mine? [The question threw her off for a moment.] Ah...I don't really have one. I like most of the things I've seen. I did bring in sausage, but it was more something I thought I would be capable of cooking myself. [She just wishes some of them didn't look so much on the burnt side.]

Did you have a favorite so far?

I like all the meat!

[Because that's a terribly helpful and clear comment to make.]

Most people here are from Earth, right? I've had some of your food so far, and everything new I try is every bit as delicious as I imagined.

[Glancing around, hoping that the spill can be smoothed over as gracefully as possible when her initial question was kind of a non-sequitur.] Where are your sausages?

I've had different dishes from all over the world before, so I definitely agree. I think each kind brings something different to it.

[Jerry's way of cooking anything and everything always did mean you got to try lots of new foods.]

Um...the little brats are over here. [She motions to the platter with the bratwurst, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.] They taste best with the sauerkraut, um--in my opinion.
