day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

Funny, that's usually the other way around. People not realizing that someone famous knew her.

[ interestingly enough, nikola's the one who's adapted to modern times the best. helen's still sometimes far too victorian to function. ]

We attended university together, for a time, and have stayed in touch ever since. [ save those sixty-some-odd years he was running about by himself, lost to madness and obsession. not his best and brightest of decades, that's for sure. ]

Well, I didn't realize anyone famous knew her either, to be fair.

[Either way, for someone who loves history and culture like Rebekah does, it's a cool moment.

Don't worry Nikola, her brother went through a fifty year phase like that thanks to the Hunter's curse. It happens.

nikola > helen > rebekah?

[ he just faked his death and his obsessive personality latched onto his ancestry in attempt to compensate for lack of ~science~ to focus on, and just spiraled out of control from there. at least klaus had a more of a reason to go batshit... ]

What all has Helen told you about herself? Her past? Surely, you have to be wondering how she can possibly know me, when I should've died some seventy years ago.

[ she'd been wandering around after her talk with rebekah and she hadn't seen nikola's arrival until just then. really, she should have known. she hadn't expected him to turn social, so she wondered why he was here in the first place. he couldn't just be here for the conversation. no, there had to be another reason.

pausing for a few moments, she finally took it upon herself to head over to see what he was up to with this new friend of hers. and of course, she caught the tail end of his comment. ]

Nikola... [ she draws out his name, that familiar-sounding warning she uses when she wants to know what he's up to or dissuade him from doing something she won't like. ] I wasn't aware that your desire to handle society had spiked. Please tell me I shouldn't be worried.

[ someday she'll apologize for just interrupting their conversation. perhaps later, when she isn't worried about what he's up to. ]

[Nikola was right in that Rebekah was wondering how Helen could know someone who should have died when Nikola Tesla did (sometime while she was asleep in a coffin) but considering she's over a thousand years herself it probably isn't as surprising to her as it would be to many people. Curious, more than anything else.

But before she can say anything Helen herself is intervening. Curiouser and curiouser the situation gets.

She smiles at the other woman.
]

Nothing to worry about here, Nikola was just telling me about how the two of you met.

Yes, at Oxford. [ he turns his head to helen, grinning innocently as if he's not overstepping his boundaries here. (he is.) ] Remember, autumn of 1884? A sensible woman would've worn black, to fit in -- but not you. Brown. Not even a blue, but brown. Stuck out worse than I did.

[ he's leaping over his boundaries here and the look she shoots him says as much. she sees how it is. completely overturn her secrets, nikola. ]

He does like to remind me of that detail. He also likes to rub in my age and how much more advanced I am.

[ yep still shooting him a look. sorry, rebekah. ]

I stuck out because I was a woman. You stuck out because of your accent. I fail to see your point.

Women who dare to be different always stand out. I know I have over the years more than a few times.

I still remember the first few times I decided to wear pants. I thought people were going to faint.

[A subtle hint that if she's supposed to be surprised or alarm by Helen's age, she isn't.]

Sounds like we're not the only ones who don't look our ages. We should start a club, Helen.

Is that your master plan, Nikola, creating a club for the variously long-lived people?

[ she's teasing him now, her expression one of her finest nikola-trolling faces. watch them devolve into five-year-old banter/arguing in front of rebekah.

she does turn back to her friend, though, offering a teasingly curious sort of smile. ]
The day I stopped wearing corsets was an equally interesting one. I don't think society is ever truly ready to face those who would change what is normal, particularly if they do it consistently over a long period of time. [ like helen herself has done. ]

I'd be surprised if either one of you had lived as long as I have, honestly. [It's said casually, as if it's not a big deal.]

No, they never are. The world often tries to resist change as much as it can, I've lived long enough to learn that, if nothing else.

[Being a vampire has helped Rebekah resist getting stuck in certain roles. even if she sometimes got placed in them anyways thanks to her brothers.]

Oh, you can get the world to change if you try hard enough. [ spoken with the confidence of the man who has done just that. but as always, that confidence quickly morphs into bitterness. ] Just be prepared to not receive credit for doing any of it.

[ this whole conversation is making her very curious about rebekah. she wants to know what the other woman has been through. however, that will have to wait. nikola snatches helen's attention. time for a distraction. if they end up arguing like five-year-olds, at least he won't be thinking about that. ]

Don't be bitter, Nikola. It doesn't suit you.

Sassy. [ to rebekah with a grin, then to helen. ] Much better than your last choice in companionship. Of course, a pet rock would be a step up from dear Wilhelm.

If you two would stop needling each other, perhaps you might actually get along. [ too bad she can't lock them in a room to sort out their differences. ]

I'm a better choice than most people. It's good to see someone notices for once.
