day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

It has been a rough few days, hasn't it?

[ understatement of the century there, but she's really bad at this small talk thing. ]

At least this is something a little more normal. I'm not so certain I could have pulled it off.

[ she could have. at home in old city, she could. here she would be hard-pressed to find everything she would need for it or to have the connections necessary to get everything done. ]

I've seen worse, to be honest.

[ like that time eric used her as bait for russell and chained her up in the basement of fangtasia. good job, eric.

sookie scoffs. ]
Normal. Yeah, me and "normal" don't usually belong in the same sentence together.

All the more reason to try.

[ touchy there... ]

At the very least it will give us all a much-needed break, normal or not. I can't imagine anyone here is used to something simple like this.

[ she's trying to get to know more people, to not be the little hermit she'd like to be here. it's this small talk she's not so good at. ]

Don't worry. I'm not very good at it either. Comes with the bad habit of responding to things people aren't saying instead of what they are.

[ like she did just then, responding to helen's thoughts instead of her words. ]

[ well that's... unexpected. helen pauses, eyeing her. ]

Telepathy or a good guess?

Telepathy. Kinda hard to have much of a social life when you hear all those rude comments everyone's "too nice" to say.

I would imagine that makes things a lot more difficult.

[ not just for everyone else, but for sookie as well. she's known telepaths before and the strain they endure at times can be unimaginable. the memory of the telepathic criminal she'd baited and trapped flashes through her mind, but she stamps down on it.

despite being in a prison themselves, that wasn't aimed at sookie and she doesn't need to feel as though she's being judged by someone who doesn't know her. ]

[ sookie sees it. it's a brief flash and the face is blurry, but she sees it, and it makes her regard helen with a certain... uncertainty. ]

I'm not-- I'm not some human experiment or anything like that. Not some sort of sci-fi sleeper agent genetically coded to listen in and steal secrets.

[ all right time to do this thing properly. she straightens a little so she's fully facing sookie, hands palm-out at about stomach-level for the briefest of moments before they fall to rest at her sides. ]

I know. I've known telepaths before. Some of my closest friends have been less human by blood than I am, but with more humanity in them than most genetic humans I've met. [ she's the last person to judge someone based on what they are. what's important is who they are. ]

I realize we barely know each other. But I was hoping, even before this, that perhaps we could change that.

[ for all her flowery phrasing, she's being entirely 100% sincere. she wouldn't be here in the first place if she wasn't. and she's far from afraid or threatening. she wants a reason to trust this woman and hopes sookie can someday trust her in turn. ]

You have? [ the fact that sookie's still talking, that she hasn't walked away or issued a reminder (or first time notice) that she's blood bonded to a viking vampire speaks for itself. she would like to get to know this woman better, too. she's lacking in friends... especially those who aren't teenagers -- no offense to zatanna and elena and caroline, and all the others she's come to adore. but there are some times when she's painfully aware of the age gap, and how much they're still young and she's not. ]

The only telepaths I've ever come across are like me. Faeries, or at least part-faerie.

I have. [ she's got an age gap of her own to deal with, so she'd understand that feeling. being 274 tends to put life in general into a different perspective.

her expression turns a little more interested at the faerie comment, and her smile is warm. ]
Can't say I've ever come across a faerie before you, but I have known many non-humans. Telepaths are rare, but are also invaluable friends and allies. Not just because they can hear that which isn't spoken, but also because they tend to have a different perspective on the world in which they live. They see things in a different light.

[ it's fascinating and she finds seeing situations from as many angles as possible helps her come to solutions that benefit more than just one person or species. ]
