day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[The Mikaelsons have always made a point of mingling with the best of the best, of making a presence in whatever town they settled in -- no matter how short or long that settlement might be (which usually depended on how long it took for their father to catch up with them). Rebekah's mingled with politicians, royalties, famous minds and everything in between.

She raises a brow at the assumptions. Blueberries look different enough that she can't help but assume he's an idiot for the mistake, and the disdain in her voice is probably evident when she speaks.]

[ idiot is far from the truth when dealing with a man who's IQ is sitting pretty at the top of the spectrum along with the likes of leonard da vinci, far past that of his contemporaries. he makes a noncommittal noise, shrugging as if the flavor doesn't matter to him -- it doesn't. nikola doesn't really eat. he can, but he's too picky in most scenarios to do so. it's all blood and wine for this one, though he wouldn't be caught dead (ha, because he's a vampire anomaly here in being alive vs dead) drinking the former. ]

[To be fair, she doesn't know who she was talking to -- and even if she did it might not change her attitude. Being an Original came with an arrogance of it's own, even if it's not something she indulges in as much as she used to.

She doesn't have to eat either, but she occasionally does so to keep up the illusion in public. She shakes her head.]

[ that's more than he does. nikola will take a bite of something here and there to annoy someone (like he did when he ate a few of elena's fries that one time), but otherwise he's content with letting people believe he's just a picky wine snob. because he is. no sense in lying about that, not when he has a tendency to clean out entire wine cellars when he's hard at work on something, drinking while an idea and a determination to see it through consume him. ]

I suppose that's a little higher on the ladder than something store bought, but seeing as I brought nothing myself, I don't have much room to talk on the matter.

To be completely honest, I'm not here for the food or the people. [ time to stop beating around the bush. helen's warmed up to this girl, and well... when he's actually concerned about helen, he will actually talk to the people she surrounds herself with. it's about the only time he'll hold civil conversations with william outside of a crisis. ]

I'm here to keep an eye on her. [ he nods towards where helen's standing off in the distance. ] Frankly, I'm worried, and she likes you so, hello, I'm Nikola Tesla, and you're... Rebekah, correct?

Funny, that's usually the other way around. People not realizing that someone famous knew her.

[ interestingly enough, nikola's the one who's adapted to modern times the best. helen's still sometimes far too victorian to function. ]

We attended university together, for a time, and have stayed in touch ever since. [ save those sixty-some-odd years he was running about by himself, lost to madness and obsession. not his best and brightest of decades, that's for sure. ]

[ she'd been wandering around after her talk with rebekah and she hadn't seen nikola's arrival until just then. really, she should have known. she hadn't expected him to turn social, so she wondered why he was here in the first place. he couldn't just be here for the conversation. no, there had to be another reason.

pausing for a few moments, she finally took it upon herself to head over to see what he was up to with this new friend of hers. and of course, she caught the tail end of his comment. ]

Nikola... [ she draws out his name, that familiar-sounding warning she uses when she wants to know what he's up to or dissuade him from doing something she won't like. ] I wasn't aware that your desire to handle society had spiked. Please tell me I shouldn't be worried.

[ someday she'll apologize for just interrupting their conversation. perhaps later, when she isn't worried about what he's up to. ]

[Nikola was right in that Rebekah was wondering how Helen could know someone who should have died when Nikola Tesla did (sometime while she was asleep in a coffin) but considering she's over a thousand years herself it probably isn't as surprising to her as it would be to many people. Curious, more than anything else.

But before she can say anything Helen herself is intervening. Curiouser and curiouser the situation gets.

She smiles at the other woman.]

Nothing to worry about here, Nikola was just telling me about how the two of you met.

she does turn back to her friend, though, offering a teasingly curious sort of smile. ] The day I stopped wearing corsets was an equally interesting one. I don't think society is ever truly ready to face those who would change what is normal, particularly if they do it consistently over a long period of time. [ like helen herself has done. ]

No, they never are. The world often tries to resist change as much as it can, I've lived long enough to learn that, if nothing else.

[Being a vampire has helped Rebekah resist getting stuck in certain roles. even if she sometimes got placed in them anyways thanks to her brothers.]
