When I said I wanted to get out of Mystic Falls for a while, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Ruins of some ancient prison in Italy or China, maybe, but not underwater and in some alien dimension, or however the hell that's supposed to work. [ if he's getting the gist of this right. he's going by video game logic here. ]

And what happened to a trial by a jury of your peers? Is that not a thing on Planet X? Too human a concept for you? Is throwing eighteen-year-olds in prison for skipping a couple of classes back in high school [ and eradicating an entire vampire bloodline via staking finn mikaelson, but shhhh ] just something you do for fun around here?

[ just when things had calmed down and the world was returning to normal (or as normal as the world was capable of getting after everything that happened back home), this happens. it's just his luck, too. nothing ever stayed good for matt donovan. his life sucked, and it looks like graduating from high school meant it was only going to get suckier from here on out. ]

So much for the world tour.

Rebekah. [ there's open, honest relief clinging to her name as it rolls off his tongue. matt's seen things, done things — but finding oneself inexplicably imprisoned in some giant, underwater dome is enough to freak even the calmest of people's shit out. the supernatural he can do. the science fiction... yeah, that's new territory. he'd rather be dealing with the ghosts of angry vampire hunters again. ]

What? [ softly, barely audible. the look on his face is pure relief.

while he was never in favor of forcing elena to do something she didn't want to do, he hadn't wanted her to be a vampire and still very much blamed himself for her becoming one. if she hadn't decided to give her life of for his, she'd still be alive. and he would've been okay with drowning in that river so that she could live. (he would've been okay with the ring not working and him dying at damon's hands to bring her back to herself, too.) while rebekah's also largely to blame, he can't deny the role he played in that accident. if he hadn't conspired with jeremy to get elena the hell out of dodge...

it takes him a moment to form proper words. ] So, she doesn't— She doesn't know anything about Silas and all that mess. Or that she's supposed to be a vampire now.

She knows about the vampire part. Stefan told her shortly after he arrived. And she knows about that I was the one to kill her. [And yet somewhere, she and Elena have found common ground here. It's strange, having that muddled now with the memories of her Thelma and Louise adventures with emotionless Elena but she's trying not to think on all of that too much.]

But none of them no about Silas. Or the cure. Or what happened to Jeremy. [Or Kol, but Rebekah is aware she's the only one who cares about that one.]

[ don't read too much into this, rebekah, but you're getting a hug. matt can be a very tactile person when given the chance, and after everything that's happened back home on top of being transported here and having everyone ask him questions about the ring and being forced to lie — he could the reassurance of physical touch to help confirm that yes, this is real. he's real and so is she. ]

[It surprises her -- the hug that is.

It's been a rough few weeks or so here in the dome (and in the other creepy prison) and Rebekah would never admit it, has no one to admit it to, but she could use some comfort. Which is why when the hug happens she wraps her arms around him in return. She tucks her head in, sighing a little in relief.

She shouldn't be glad he's here -- Matt is far too good, too human for a place like this but when it comes down to it, she's glad. Glad she won't be the only person who knows what's to come.]

[ oh, okay. this quick hug is going to turn into a prolonged embrace, it seems. matt can't really complain — he initiated it and he knows from spending so much time around rebekah recently that no one really stops to pay her much mind. she just had to deal with her dick of an ex trying to blow them up, and despite the brave face she put on during it, that couldn't have been easy for her. she probably needs a hug, too. and there's nothing wrong in taking mutual comfort in the fact that despite knowing so much, too much, that you can't share with the people around you, you're not alone in knowing it. ]

I'm sorry you're stuck here. [ matt donovan: the only person who will ever apologize to rebekah for being thrown into prison on grounds he knows are at least partially valid, being that she almost killed him that one time. ]

[It's the truth. This place -- it isn't always kind (but neither was Mystic Falls) and he deserved more. He deserved to see the world like she had promised him. But instead he's here. It isn't fair. Not that life ever is.

She finally forces herself to untangle from him, taking a step back to create some distance between them.]

[ he follows, fiddling with the sleeves of the jumpsuit until he's managed to roll them up — only to roll them back down. he may find long sleeves to be a bit warm in this environment, but it's suddenly very necessary to gather clothes with sleeves that reach all the way down to his wrists. ]

Long sleeves. [ to make that statement not as random as it must seem, matt sidles up beside her as they walk, tugging a sleeve up high enough to reveal the scars on his arm in the distinct shape of teeth. he could pass it off for a dog bite with people not from mystic falls, but everyone from home would know that's a vampire bite. ]
