When I said I wanted to get out of Mystic Falls for a while, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Ruins of some ancient prison in Italy or China, maybe, but not underwater and in some alien dimension, or however the hell that's supposed to work. [ if he's getting the gist of this right. he's going by video game logic here. ]

And what happened to a trial by a jury of your peers? Is that not a thing on Planet X? Too human a concept for you? Is throwing eighteen-year-olds in prison for skipping a couple of classes back in high school [ and eradicating an entire vampire bloodline via staking finn mikaelson, but shhhh ] just something you do for fun around here?

[ just when things had calmed down and the world was returning to normal (or as normal as the world was capable of getting after everything that happened back home), this happens. it's just his luck, too. nothing ever stayed good for matt donovan. his life sucked, and it looks like graduating from high school meant it was only going to get suckier from here on out. ]

So much for the world tour.

Thank God for long sleeves. [ and he keeps making it worse, like his mouth and brain aren't agreeing on what he should and shouldn't be saying. ]

So, uh, do we have to sleep in cells or is there a dorm thing going on here?

Actually, there are various apartment buildings you can stay in throughout the different sectors. Free of rent much like everything else here is free.

I live in the Tier Apartments in Sector 3. [Though she's been debating moving.]

I have empty rooms, as the people who shared my apartment have all left. [She lets the offer linger. She doubts he'll take advantage of it, but it's there.]

[ the offer's tempting, but not for the reasons she might think. matt's been alone at home since vicki died and his mother left town after making out with his best friend. sure, living with jeremy for a while had been fun and filled with too much pizza, video games, and beer (sometimes pot, lbr), but it hadn't lasted. and then he was back to living alone in a house that was even bigger and emptier than the one he grew up in. living alone really sucks. solitude is nice and all, but sometimes you just want to know that there's someone else in the house other than yourself. ]

I didn't mean it like that.

[And she didn't, mostly.

She gets lonely too. She spent a thousand years almost never living alone. And even though Nik was often far from good company he was still company. But he disowned her and now she has the memories of the months alone in that house in Mystic Falls she claimed for herself when she left the mansion.

She remembers how empty this big apartment feels now. Without her brothers (not that she'd ask Nik to live with her again, knowing what she does now -- and Kol -- well she doesn't let her thoughts linger too long there). Without Quinn. (April had stayed with her a while back home, before she had been daggered. The concept of friends is still a new one but one that continues to grow on her).]

It's just a big place for one person is all.

Caroline and I had just gotten back together. She did this really big romantic gesture by singing to me at the Grill. [ he'd been moved by it, filled with joy, thought they were finally fixing things and would get back together, putting the confusion and mixed signals of the past few months behind them. ] Your brother's warlock stormed the place, attacked her. I had no idea what was going on, and was stupid enough to get in the middle of it. I took a broken bottle to the jugular, thought I was done for. Caroline gave me her blood and it freaked me out. When I came to later, it was like my whole world was turned upside down. These were people I've known my whole life, and every single one of them had been lying to me. Caroline, Elena, Tyler, Jeremy -- all of them. They were vampires and werewolves, and I had no clue.

I'm sorry, Matt. No one should have to find out like that. [No wonder he's still so distrusting of the supernatural, so resistant to the idea of being involved with a vampire.]

See, before all that, my sister-- [ his voice catches in his throat. it's still sometimes difficult to talk about vicki. ] My sister was going through something. She was kind of a stoner, so I thought it was just drugs, that all the pot and other stuff she was doing was finally catching up to her... What I didn't realize until after Caroline told me she was a vampire was that Vicki had been in transition. The aversion to sunlight, inability to keep food down, how her jaw kept hurting -- it all clicked into place. I thought Caroline did it, because what else was I supposed to think? Suddenly my dead sister's mysterious death made sense and a had someone I could actually blame standing in front of me.

And it was my girlfriend.

She didn't do it. Damon did, and Stefan staked her after she attacked Elena. [ or so he'd been told. neither he nor jeremy could remember that night. ] But like I said, I freaked out to the point that I went to Caroline's mom and started spying on them all for her. I got Caroline to tell me everything and faked being compelled to forget, only to tell Sheriff Forbes everything later.

[ he looks ashamed, because he is. not his proudest moment, but he'd been an ordinary boy flung into the supernatural whose friends had been lying to him about everything, including what happened to his sister. it hurt. ] She may have thrown that back in my face -- her lying about everything -- when I told her I wasn't going to tell her anything about the future. Because you know, I'm a horrible person for not wanting to tell her that Tyler's mom's dead and he's been run out of town.

I think -- when we find out something has happened to someone we care about, especially family, it's hard to think straight. It often leads us to doing things we may not be totally proud of.

[Like standing on the bridge that night, when she thought the only way she could protect her other brothers. Except Niklaus wasn't really dead. And Kol ended up dying anyways, at the hands of Elena and Jeremy.]

Or that Elena loses her humanity and tries to kill her. Or that Silas will try to make her kill herself -- I doubt any of them realize just how much better they are off not knowing.
