Day 222 — Mandatory activity mingle
[ It's a wonderful, stormy day here in Squall Asylum and vacation time is officially over! Your gracious overlords have worked out a light itinerary for you today and they expect you to keep it.

Get in line to pick up your food rations for the day. Eat breakfast if you have time for it, or perhaps you'd rather skip this one time and save yourself the discomfort during the two hours of exercise that follow. Jogging, jumping jacks or perhaps impromptu team sports, whatever you end up doing you bet you'll come out exercised in the end!

Should you not want to participate... well. We have ways to make you join in. Anyone reluctant to get their heart rate up will get a helpful electric prod by one of the bots until they comply. Tough cookies.

Luckily you'll get a chance to wash off that sweat (hope you're not shy, the wash room can get crowded) before it's time for the silent game for an hour, followed by lunch. The day is not over yet though! There's still time for a couple of hours of hard labor tending to the crops, doing laundry or perhaps breaking bricks in the yard. To make sure none of the inmates are broken this is also the time for mandatory physical checkups — bots will guide you to the hospital. No ifs or buts. The violation of personal privacy is for your own good, we promise.

Isn't it nice, being in prison? ]

((ooc: This mingle takes place during all of day 222. A bullet-point for of the itinerary can be found here, where we also encourage you to direct any questions. Event info is here if you need it. ))

[ that definitely earns points and she gives an approving smile. ]

Quite the noble and caring cause. It's nice to know there are others with such a thought.

[ she may or may not be planning on doing the same with half of hers.

she's very curious about him. well, she can ask politely and if he declines an answer, that'll be the end of it. ]

May I ask how your body restores energy if you don't require food?

There would be no purpose in my wasting that which I do not require.

[ He tilts his head slightly, and gives a small nod. He doesn't mind the inquiry. ]

I am an android. As such, my power cells continually recharge themselves.

[ there isn't much of a noticeable difference in helen's reaction to that news. if anything, she looks fascinated rather than repulsed or afraid. ]

I would imagine that comes with as many drawbacks as advantages in a place like this. [ makes her wonder how the "power drain" affects him here. ] Regardless, you have a kind heart to do something like this. I was hoping to do something similar.

[ her body requires food; she's just slightly more used to being on a limited diet due to the two wars she lived through and her tendency to forget to eat and sleep when she's overworking herself. ]

[ Fascinated is a reaction Data will gracefully accept; even if it isn't terribly frequent anymore, getting fear or revulsion as a response is far from unheard of for him, and it's never a reaction he enjoys. ]

A statement which holds true for any environment in which I find myself, though the drawbacks here are... quite specialized.

[ And his head tilts back in the other direction, his brows arching as he gives a small frown. ]

There would be nothing for me to gain by keeping that which I do not require under these circumstances. I can eat, and I can taste food, but I do not rely on the nutrients which organic lifeforms do. However... thank you.

[ Can't accept the compliment without analyzing it. ]

Do you not require the rations with which you have been provided?

[ she's seen humans with far less acceptance and outright humanity than non-humans or human-abnormals. she sees no reason to judge data on what he is before she sees who he is. for a moment, she pauses, but then curiosity wins out. ]

Are you experiencing the "power drain" I've heard others mention?

[ it hasn't affected her, unless it's taken away her longevity without her knowing it. ]

I do. However, I am one of the few who excessive amounts of sleeping and eating in stressful situations.

[ her statement is admitting a lot for someone who cares to analyze her words. she's admitting that she tends not to eat or sleep much when she's got a lot on her mind and that she finds this situation stressful in some capacity. ]

[ That's a delicate question; while he hasn't been inclined to widely publicize his situation, it's a direct inquiry, and the information could be relevant to the circumstances in which they have all found themselves. His tendency to share and compare information wins out, and he gives a slight nod. ]

Yes; though my core processing functionality is intact, I am experiencing certain limitations on some of my abilities. I am not yet certain how they have managed to alter my systems so specifically.

[ He tilts his head a bit at her statement, both curious and concerned. ]

I have noted that there seems to be a great deal of variance in how different individuals respond to stressful situations. You are not adversely affected by these decreases in rest and nutrients?

[ she wouldn't have blamed him in the least for refusing to answer. she's simply one of those people who wants to know everything she can about a situation before it becomes necessary and finding out as much as she can about this "power drain" others are experiencing is at the top of her list. if the wardens can neutralize any kind of ability to make everyone nearly equal... it's both fascinating and frightening. what else could they do with such power?

it makes her wonder if they've found a way to shorten her longevity. ]

Disturbing, nonetheless, that they're even capable of such a thing. You aren't the first to express such concern or mention being affected like this.

[ the way her lips purse suggests that she's not fond of this at all. ]

If I am, it has yet to truly turn up over the course of my long life. [ says the woman who's fallen asleep at her desk before. ] If I have enough to prevent me from eating or sleeping, I have enough to do to keep my mind and body from protesting the decrease. [ in other words, she prefers to keep herself occupied. she hates being idle. ]

[ He's of a like mind; any knowledge they possess should be combined, so that a better overall understanding of their collective situation can be established. ]

It is highly disturbing. Many of those who have been affected are extremely dissimilar in nature, and the limitations which have been imposed would require vastly different approaches. This is indicative of an extremely advanced and varied set of capabilities.

[ His tone is quite grave, his eyebrows slightly arched to emphasize it. On the table in front of him, he places both of his hands, his fingers clasped together. He can certainly relate to difficulties in being idle. He gives a nod at her explanation. ]

It is fortunate that you are not facing difficulty, then. There do seem to be those who respond to such stresses in the opposite fashion.

[ the more knowledge shared, the better, as far as she's concerned. ]

Which doesn't lean in our favor. [ not that she's surprised. it's not really anything new. ]

In my line of work, one always has to be prepared. Working overtime is by far more natural to me than getting enough rest. This will likely be of use here. [ hopefully. ]

Regardless, it would be good to be careful. For all of us. There's no telling what might happen here with our wardens being capable of limiting us like this.

[ this is her way of telling him to be careful as well. she doesn't want anything to hurt him, either. ]

Indeed; caution is rarely an ill-advised course of action.

[ He gets it, and that's how he turns it back around on her. ]

In spite of our limitations, however, this may still be an opportunity for us to learn more about the nature of our situation, and I believe there are few forms of preparation that we could ask for greater than knowledge. The existence of Squall Asylum alone is of note; while I had been made aware of a previous dome, from which many inmates were transferred to MarinaNova, the existence of Squall suggests not only that these facilities are replaced by new ones, but that there is potentially a network of such facilities in operation simultaneously. It is equally curious to note, however, that we do not appear to have joined an existing population.

[ well that's interesting. she takes in what he's saying quietly, with a cautiously interested expression on her face. he's got a point and it adds on to what she's already heard. ]

Makes you wonder if, perhaps, these dome prisons and their network are simply for subduing one group or if there are others we aren't aware of with groups of their own. Obviously, either Squall didn't have prisoners or theirs were transferred before our arrival, but that begs the question of why transfer inmates who are already settled if there's no inherent danger?

Indeed it does. Perhaps Squall was chosen as our temporary relocation as it did not yet currently host inmates of its own. Alternate facilities may even be a means of progression in our captivity; it is possible that those individuals the wardens claim are "lost in the dimensional stabilizer" are in actuality being transferred to other prison environments.

[ Theorizing is certainly one way to stay busy. ]

Wouldn't that be an interesting theory to prove. [ it's much better than the current theory, at any rate. ] If it's true, they might never be returned, but at least we would know they're still alive.

[ it's not usually her thing to look on the bright side like this, but she'll take it. she knows other people need it. ]

Proving such a theory would be a significant challenge. However, were we to gain access to the systems required to prove it, and find it to be accurate, there is a chance we could recover those who have been "lost".

[ A pause. ]

Speaking speculatively, of course.

Of course, but in doing so we would run the risk of bumping something and losing them forever.

[ life and death. just another day at the office. ]

We'd need to be very careful.

Prior to making any attempts involving a sentient living being, we would need to acquaint ourselves as fully as possible with the technology; were we to gain access, we would learn all that is possible to discern about the means by which it functions from one point of access. It would also be wisest to attempt to relocate and retrieve an inanimate object prior to attempting anything more complex.

The issue with such a theoretical endeavour, of course, would be that those in overall control of what is likely a network of numerous facilities would be alerted to our efforts prior to our being able to pursue any such efforts.

[ Ah, a nice touch of frustration from his emotion chip. He's starting to get used to that sensation. ]

In other words, our hands are tied at the moment. I don't know of many who would be willing to put innocent lives in danger just to leave.

[ either way, it's making her head hurt a bit. ]

It isn't an endeavor to give up on, but one we must take with caution. We can't afford to lose anyone in our attempts. However, if we ever do find ourselves in another facility or back in the othe, it can't help to compare notes.

Precisely.

[ And he gives a small shake of his head. ]

We must continue to gather intelligence and investigate all of our surroundings as thoroughly as possible - only through establishing a thorough working knowledge can we develop an understanding of how we may be able take action without unnecessary risks. At present, there is too much that remains unknown about our situation, and it would be unacceptable to gamble lives on that uncertainty.

Exactly what I was thinking. The more we can gather, the better. As unhappy as most of us are to be here, it does prove to be a necessary evil in regard to learning more about this network of prisons. If I do find something while we're here, I'll be certain to bring it to your attention.

I find it is often true that even the most unpleasant of circumstances grants us an opportunity to further develop our experiences and expand the knowledge available to us.

[ And he gives a dutiful nod at her offer. ]

I would be most appreciative of that. As my nature grants me the ability to accurately record any information to which I am exposed, I am continually in the process of gathering as much intelligence as possible.
