Class 002 : Day 218 : Wendigo [action]
Welcome or welcome back to Paranormal Studies.

[Sam starts off with another disclaimer-type comment for the new students as he did at the beginning of his last class about how this isn't a class on hunting.]

Topic: Wendigo

Today, we're talking about wendigos. The name means "evil that devours" and it's a pretty good description. They were actually human once, but something happened to them. Something extreme. Maybe long, cold winters without enough supplies. Whatever the case, they find themselves turning to cannibalism to survive. Obviously, not every cannibal becomes a wendigo, but some do. It changes them. The get taller, leaner, faster, stronger, vicious and always hungry. [Sometimes this class sounds like a scary story, doesn't it? He should teach around a campfire.]

They often hibernate for long periods of time, storing live food. Meaning they abduct and hold people, eating them slowly, stripping off pieces of skin and keeping them alive as they do it as long as possible.

It's the perfect hunter. It has all the power it needs for any prey and the intelligence too. It can stalk you without you knowing it's there, biding it's time to take out a full traveling party. It can also imitate human voices to lure you out.

[ WENDIGO ]

Case Study: Black Water Ridge, Colorado

We—Dean and I—were sent coordinates to Black Water Ridge, Colorado, where we discovered a Tommy Collins had gone missing on a hike. With some research I found people had been going missing in that area in 23-year cycles. We needed better information of what we were up against, so we found a survivor of a "bear" attack. [He actually uses the finger quotes, yes.] It's not unusual for people to come up with neat labels for things that don't make any sense to them, so it's important to look through all records for anything that doesn't seem to fit. Sometimes it's swamp gas or unusual diseases or animal attacks. This time it was a bear attack.

The survivor was able to tell us the thing that killed his family was smart and fast and didn't sound like a man or an animal. With a little more research we were able to figure out we were up against the Wendigo.

Knowing that didn't exactly make things easy from there. We ended up out in the forest with a guide, and Tommy Collin's sister and younger brother. We had to keep all of them safe while finding and rescuing Tommy and not getting ourselves killed in the process. The guide didn't make it. [He clears his throat a little. It's one of those moments where the weight of turning hunting into a class topic catches up to him. He's talking about some pretty strong subjects here even if this was a pretty easy case compared to a lot of what he faced. There was always a body count.]

We did recover Tommy. The Wendigo had been storing people in an abandoned mine. Dean also managed to kill the Wendigo.

[ BLACK WATER RIDGE, COLORADO ]

Practical: Defense of Wendigo

So, how did we do it? Fire. They are vulnerable to it. He was shot once in the chest with a flare gun. There are also some protection symbols from the Anasazi. If they're drawn correctly and you stay in their area of protection they'll act as a ward, keeping a wendigo at bay. A lot of taking them on is knowledge, skill, and luck. There is no conventional fighting with them, but it's also possible silver-tipped arrows can take them down.

[ ANASAZI SYMBOLS ]

Questions & Discussion

Okay, I think that's everything I had. Has anyone else ever heard of or encountered a Wendigo or something similar? Or are there any questions?

(OOC: Backdated to late afternoon. Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail, but feel free to bring more into it. Warnings for talk of cannibalism and torture.)

[Klara had been looking for other classes to take when she saw this one. She entered hoping no one would notice her and sat in the back of the room. The lecture had been fascinating, disturbing, and made Klara feel a little ill, but the way he made it all sound so informative kept her from leaving. And that she was worried people would notice if she did. So she sat there, listened and took notes the entire time, and when the class ended she stayed in her corner, waiting for everyone else to leave before she did. Sitting in the back of the room does have some benefits--even though she wouldn't have seen the teacher if he wasn't so tall.

She gathers her things when the room is almost empty, eying everyone else left in the room and gaining the courage to go up and speak to the teacher. He looked nice. Would he mind answering her questions? If someone else comes up to her, she won't run, but she might take a bit to warm up to them.]

[ Peggy was just about to leave when she saw Klara out of the corner of her eye. Smiling, genuinely this time, she approached her. ]

You're Klara, right? I'm Peggy. I believe we talked briefly over the network a few days ago?

[ she doesn't wish to frighten her, but she had been worried about the girl. ]

[Klara is a bit shy at being approached, but she recognizes the woman. She tries to smile back, but it's somewhat awkward and small.] ...Yes, I remember. Hi. [She pauses.] You go to school, too?

[ she smiled softly ] Of course, and one never really ever leaves school either. We simply move on to self study most of the time.

[ but she frowned then, slightly ] You're a little young to be sitting in on a lecture like this, aren't you?

[ perhaps she should have a talk with Sam. A kid friendly version could always be provided for those still interested. ]

I like thinking of it like that. [Since she hasn't been in a formal school in years, but was very set on learning as much as she could. Still she's a little wary.] ...I did not know you had to be a certain age to be here.

[She looks around at the group of students in the room that haven't left yet.] I don't think I'm too young.

[ Peggy took a look around the room, noting that the majority were adults, or at least of legal age. ]

But you can't be more then... thirteen?

[ she said it hesitating, wanting to give Klara the benefit of a doubt. And while Sam had kept the details light, it could still be traumatizing for a young child. ]

[She feels a little trapped. It's not good to lie, but what if she says the truth and then Peggy runs away? She was nice to her when she arrived and Klara doesn't want that to happen. But maybe she would realize that she shouldn't trust people just because they look like nice little girls if Klara does.]

I'm...older than I look. Stunted growth.

[ she frowns thoughtfully, almost bemused before Peggy shook her head. ]

I see... Then I suppose it would be rude to ask what age you are?

[ It's up to Klara if she answers and if Klara wanted to pretend, so be it. She's meet far younger children who insisted on being adults and in truth, she could hardly fault them for it. As it so often did, the thought that war left no children echoed loudly through her thoughts. ]

[It is not rude, since it's a reasonable question, but it's not really one that Klara wants to answer. She tries to think of a good response. If she took her real age and divided by half...]

Sixteen. [She says it with more confidence, hoping that it makes her sound more believable.] I don't look it, but I'm not a child.

I have been duly corrected; I won't make the same mistake again. Perhaps at the next class we can sit together then?

[Oh. She...wants to sit next to her? But...why? Peggy is very confusing to her.]

If you want. [It would be rude to turn her down.] There are plenty of seats, too. [If she decided to change her mind. And to get off of the very awkward topic...]

Had you heard of wendigo before?

[She shakes her head quickly.] No, never. I'd never read about them before either. I've read a lot about monsters, but wendigos were never one of them.

Mostly they talked about vampires, werewolves and hellhounds.

[If she didn't have to pause on her way out to make sure the few loose papers in her notebook stayed put, she likely wouldn't have spotted Klara. She's... surprised once she does-- less from how long it's been, and more that Sam's class was not really kid-friendly, in her opinion.

She's not about to voice how she feels Klara shouldn't be here so bluntly, though, and takes a moment to decide what to say]

[She might be the first to admit that maybe the class was a little more graphic than she had expected, but Klara wasn't put off by it either. The fact that others seemed surprised by her presence does make her feel a bit uncomfortable. She tries not to show it, her face expressionless.]

I wanted to learn about things from other worlds.

[It's a little suffocating to have someone this close being this...nice. She is still getting used to it. But she doesn't try to shift away this time like she has done in the last few days.] I have to start somewhere. I don't know if I was here when the class started.

Where would you start learning about the supernatural?

It was a bit ago... He started with a lecture on ghosts... [She keeps her discomfort at that topic under tight wrap, just shifting the notebook in her grip before shifting topics]

Well, I began with this class because the subject was close to what is present on my world: beings that consume humans. That's what I'd recommend, to start with something similar to what you know of or what's possible in your world. It's easier to build your way up than to begin with concepts and information that are radical.

This isn't very different from things I've read before at home. [Well it is, but vampires drink human's blood and wendigos eat their flesh, so it's not that different to her. Monsters are monsters--even if Eric says they can they choose not to be.]

I wish I had been here for the ghost lecture, but this was...informative. [She's trying to find a nice way to phrase things. She doesn't want to insult Tear and tell her she's intruding. Insulting adults is bad behavior her parents never would have accepted.]

["Informative", she says. Raising her eyebrows a fraction, Tear settles back in an upright stance while giving a bit of a side-eye to the young girl. It's not condescending or negative, really just bemused]

Was what you read considered fiction on your world?

Some of it. A lot of the books claimed to be telling the truth. [And she knows that some of it was, even if she wasn't sure just how much. The books on vampires alone were full of confusing statements.] The teacher said he fought a wendigo, so they should be real. He doesn't have a reason to lie about it here.

I'm certain that such things exist in Sam's world. But not every world is the same; there are those that only humans and ordinary animals inhabit, nothing supernatural but much fiction and myth people think truth.

Did you know any of that "fiction" to be real in your world?

Not every world is the same, but a lot of things people don't like to accept even when they are real. [Well, of course they won't be real everywhere, but the fact they exist somewhere is enough for it to be interesting to her. She hesitates to response to that last question because she's not ready to say anything yet, but maybe if she just...leaves some of it out, it won't be so bad. She won't be lying more than she already is.]

...I know vampires exists.

[A faint chuckle; that's a bit of wisdom there, despite Klara's young age. But the girl's hesitation, combined with her answer, does concern her more than she lets on. Does she know of vampires because she was attacked, and the memory of that gives her pause to bring up?

Does she ask the girl directly, or piece it together on her own...]

I've read some books about werewolves and sea creatures, but...just vampires. No one would believe me.

[She could tell her about that at least. Her father wouldn't have believed her either. As far as he was concerned, she was a demon who fed on humans. It didn't matter whether that was entirely correct or not.]
