Mingle: Event Kick-Off
[ It was mid-morning. The sky was clear and it was a (not so) very blustery day. It was cool but it was always cool. It was neither too warm nor too hot.

Lukewarm.

And that was just how Bak preferred it. Especially since he had in hand his very important, extra special concoction of wonderful forgetfulness on hand! Bak could stand teasing, but even this was getting ridiculous.

Hefting the bag a little higher so it fit snug into the crook between elbow and shoulder, he stepped off into wild world of Marinanova and promptly had to grab onto his hat.

Opps. He always forgot about that step down.

Taking another step, he nearly tripped again, this time on a rock. Frowning, Bak starred at the offending piece of debris and then he kicked it.

And yelped.

And then held his foot, dropping his bag in a near blinding rush of ”Eeeek!” as he dived for the paper bag, watching as with a POOF half of the contents disappeared into the wind, leaving him sneezing and dazed on the ground wondering what the heck had just happened. Clearly, his own formula had been getting the best of him. It happens when one sneaky scientist messes with the formula and Bak spent the better part of the morning putting the final touches of the mixture together.

Heightened emotions indeed.

Bak will rue this day assuming he survived it. ]

((ooc: Consider this post an open mingle and the start of the Marina Feelings Roulette Event! Creating your own posts is, as always, highly encouraged. And, unless you got an extra hefty dose of it right off the bat (re: by being in proximity to Bak when it happened) feelings should gradually start to go haywire later in the day with strongest feelings in the afternoon and tapering off again as evening descends. For more info on the details, please go here. Have fun!))

[Calliope leans against the shelf on the other side, taking a breath. She thinks that she avoided being seen, given the lack of a shriek or other sounds of revulsion.]

There's no need to apologize, dear.

On the contrary, I'm the one who didn't want to scare you.

[Scare her? She's the one who kills people. It's almost silly for someone to think they could make her afraid when she's the real threat. But she doesn't say that.]

You sound nice, so I don't have anything to be scared of.

Umm. [Calliope stays where she is.]

That part IS true. I don't mean you any harm at all.

Are you- um. ["Here to find a book"? Calliope berates herself, because, obviously.] What sort of book are you looking for?

[Why is she still hiding? Maybe Klara had really scared her and she didn't want to admit it. But if she won't bring it up, Klara won't either. She's in too good of a mood.]

Any books...I guess. I like to read. I was looking for more fantasy books. They're my favorite.

[Calliope looks at the shelves in front of her, and then gently starts scooting around closer to the aisle.]

[At least books are safe. Books don't judge. They can talk about those.]

I've never read much in the fantasy genre. What do you like best about them?

[Klara wonders why she still won't come out. She starts to walking towards the book shelf. She can't help her own curiosity.]

Because they can take us anywhere and anything they want could be real because that's the way their world works. In Fantasy, anything is possible and you can really be anyone or anything you want.

[Calliope smiles quite brightly at that. It's a warm and sweet kind of escapist idea, and one Calliope can relate to.]

[She doesn't really notice Klara approaching.]

I think that, if I hadn't had the opportunity to study and talk to some real-life heroes, I would probably be just as familiar with the genre as you seem to be!

You've made it sound beautiful.

[She's a rather quiet walker after so long. Her father didn't like it if she made too much noise in the attic so she learned to be as quiet as can be without avoiding sound altogether.]

Thank you. The fact that there's no perfect way it should be is why I like it. It's all so different.

[And now she'll be poking her head around the shelf to try and get a better look at who she is speaking to.]

[Calliope does hear her voice get suddenly closer. Before she can really decide to react to that, she is suddenly face-to-face with the very same cute "little" "human" girl.]

[Her green eyes widen and she freezes in place.]

Oh. Um.

[This--this was not what Klara expected. She had been told that there were many different kinds of people here and she herself is a vampire, but...at least she still looks mostly human. She had not yet come face to face with the people of the prison who were distinctly different.

But she's not scared. She's excited. Suddenly she feels this burst of exuberance and so very pleased to see this person. It's almost overwhelming. She does not know how to handle intense feelings like this.]

Hi. [She tries to smile but it comes out a bit awkward.] It was strange speaking through books.

[Calliope straightens up and clears her throat.]

Was it? My apologies, then. I was sort of trying to, um.

[Not be seen.]

[But Klara doesn't seem to be particularly afraid, and Calliope has no intention of doing anything to change that. After a spot of useless gesturing with gloved hands, she tucks them back into her pockets, trying an awkward smile of her own.]

Anyway, er. Why don't you tell me about your favorite?

[Maybe she is scared of Klara. But she's still speaking to her, so she doesn't want to do anything to change that. She is too happy to have someone to speak to this way.] My favorite? I don't know if I have one. But I did love the book I read about the young noblewoman who wanted to be a knight, only women were not allowed in her kingdom, so she started her own Order of Knights and traveled around gaining new members. It was meant to be a funny book I think, but the world was interesting.

[Calliope blinks.]

As she should have! Banning women from being knights is rather absurd. [Wait, it's a fictional story. Calliope reminds herself of this and adds.]

It does sound interesting, though! It sounds as though she showed them what-for.

She did! Even when they tried to frame her right hand man, Marten for murder. It was a good book. I read it hundreds of times.

[One of her favorites, to the point the book has worn down and the pages were falling out.]

What kind of books do you like to read?

Hundreds! I can empathize with that. [She smiles, though part of her starts wondering if that's hyperbole or not.]

Well... Whatever I can get my hands on, really! Books were always hard to come by where we grew up. I'm especially interested in histories and cultural studies, since I'm always fascinated by how other species get on with one another.

Other species? [She hadn't even considered that. Vampires weren't a species to her. They were creatures. But Eric was nice so...maybe they weren't the way she had been thinking of them, either. It's a nice thought for some reason.]

I read a lot of history books, too. And newspapers. My dad liked that I stayed up to date on current events.

Oh, fascinating! I can't imagine what it would be like. Um, having current events.

[Calliope pauses thoughtfully, and then decides there are certain things that would be perfectly alright to share.]

I am what you would consider a space alien, you see. [She's sure that Klara sees.] I grew up alone on my world, with only my brother for dubious company, and my online human friends for conversation. Still, I had access to information about the histories of humans and all sorts of other species, like trolls!

[That sounds very fascinating to her. An alien? She liked reading fantasy and science fiction, but never thought she would meet a real alien. And she understand what it's like to alone with only one other person.] It must have been very lonely. [But she doesn't sound sad.]

But since we're here now you can read anything you like.

[Calliope actually appreciates the lack of pity. Even if she herself didn't relish it, the situation wasn't all bad.]

It was lonely. But it's alright. My species is adapted to the circumstance, and our planet was so very peaceful.

[Then, with a giggle.] But short on reading material. You're quite right about that. If they have a copy of your book, I'd like to read it!

If I see it, I will get it for you. The books change every three days, but you can read it in that amount of time, I think. [Klara pauses then.] ...I don't know your name!

[She can't give her the book if she doesn't know who she is.]

I certainly can!

[She can't help but smile a little wider. Calliope wishes it were feasible for her to give her full name to just anyone, but fortunately, the nickname version does just fine.]

Please call me Callie. What's your name, dear?

[She tightens her grip on the books she's still holding, and it's such a happy elated feeling, she wonders if she could burst from it.]

Klara. I'm Klara. I'm happy to meet you, Callie. I haven't spoken to someone who likes books as much as I do in...a long time.

The pleasure is mine, Klara! [And it really is. This human is around the age of those she's used to talking to, and she seems really sweet and thoughtful. Her favorite kind of person overall.]

[She clasps her own hands together, pleased as punch.]

That's much too bad! In that case, I'll be happy to talk to you and compare notes about books anytime!

[She's very excited, to the point Klara may look like she's almost bouncing on the balls of her feet.]

We could--um--do a book club? Or see if there is one! And then we could read the same book and talk about it. We had a book club at my school. [It was one of the few extra curricular activities she enjoyed before--everything.]

[Calliope giggles at her enthusiasm. It's infectious.]

I heard someone named Tear advertising one a few days ago! It sounds like quite a lot of fun.

[Deflating slightly, though since she was giddy to begin with, it's now more of a normal tone.] But it sounds like a lot of people would be interested in attending, so I probably shouldn't go. I don't want to be a distraction, after all!
