Mingle: Event Kick-Off
[ It was mid-morning. The sky was clear and it was a (not so) very blustery day. It was cool but it was always cool. It was neither too warm nor too hot.

Lukewarm.

And that was just how Bak preferred it. Especially since he had in hand his very important, extra special concoction of wonderful forgetfulness on hand! Bak could stand teasing, but even this was getting ridiculous.

Hefting the bag a little higher so it fit snug into the crook between elbow and shoulder, he stepped off into wild world of Marinanova and promptly had to grab onto his hat.

Opps. He always forgot about that step down.

Taking another step, he nearly tripped again, this time on a rock. Frowning, Bak starred at the offending piece of debris and then he kicked it.

And yelped.

And then held his foot, dropping his bag in a near blinding rush of ”Eeeek!” as he dived for the paper bag, watching as with a POOF half of the contents disappeared into the wind, leaving him sneezing and dazed on the ground wondering what the heck had just happened. Clearly, his own formula had been getting the best of him. It happens when one sneaky scientist messes with the formula and Bak spent the better part of the morning putting the final touches of the mixture together.

Heightened emotions indeed.

Bak will rue this day assuming he survived it. ]

((ooc: Consider this post an open mingle and the start of the Marina Feelings Roulette Event! Creating your own posts is, as always, highly encouraged. And, unless you got an extra hefty dose of it right off the bat (re: by being in proximity to Bak when it happened) feelings should gradually start to go haywire later in the day with strongest feelings in the afternoon and tapering off again as evening descends. For more info on the details, please go here. Have fun!))

No. I'm not hurt, as far as I know.

[ she plops right onto that bench, pulling her knees against her chest, chin resting on top of them. ]

It's just head-wise.

... Ah. [ he supposes that he understands, however dimly.

as she settles on the bench, he stands before her, looking down at the tiny, vulnerable thing. this is very, very strange. all the more strange is the fact that he doesn't feel 100% compelled to leave her there alone. maybe 47%, which, truth be told, is pretty low.
] What did you wish to speak of?

[ she gives a minute shrug after a moment of thought. everything is kind of hazy. ]

I don't know. Anything, really. Whatever's good for you.

[ she is really not making this easy on him. oh, well. perhaps he will try a topic that cheers him up. ]

What do you know of toxicology, of poisons?

Not a whole lot.

[ she's being truthful. but then, she seems to perk. ]

I think it'd be interesting, though. A unique way to bring about death.

[ piter brightens up visibly at that. ] Interesting indeed! [ he almost seems impressed. ] It's rare that one so young learns to properly acknowledge the beauty of a well-brewed poison.

[ finally deigning to sit down beside her, he smiles. it's definitely a creepy smile. ] Now, what do you know about bringing about death, eh?

[ the shift in piter's mood amuses her, and she might just let out a soft giggle. ]

Ah, uhm. Not much about the actual bringing. I got close once, but I've really got more expertise on the being-the-one-dying end. In the double digits, if you're counting alternate selves and all.

... How very curious. [ he's met a few vampires, but not anyone who has died multiple times, at least not to his knowledge. suffice it to say that his interest is very much piqued. ]

I should like to hear how you've managed to get... yourselves, as it were, into such situations. And this "closeness" you speak of— what is it that stopped you?

It is a very complicated situation. I've got to say that every time I mention it, but it really is.

[ she nibbles at her lower lip, sinking into thought. it's usually easier for her to articulate the intricacies of her strange life, but her brainfuzz is making it a bit of an issue today. ]

Think of it like a butterfly, but...different? I started out one way, died, spent a while like that -- incorporeal in two different varieties -- was then put into a robotic body, then another alternate self of mine died and made me into who you're talking right now through a process built into the game I was a part of.

[ another pause. ]

She was meant to die a different way, not at my hand, so I backed off.

[ it's clear in the flicker of his eyes and the set of his jaw as he contemplates it all that he's following her, though he doesn't bother to nod along or make any noises of affirmation or the like when she pauses. he isn't bothering with such platitudes right now.

"robotic body," though, makes his eyes narrow almost threateningly, certainly aggressively. he doesn't like that at all. not one bit.
]

How is it that you know how this girl was meant to die? [ the unspoken questions are "who is she?" and "what did you do to her?" but he leaves them for now in favor of another. ] And what is this "game" you speak of? [ the faint aggression in his expression has dissipated; he may be demanding more data, but it is not an interrogation. ]

I don't know how to explain it to you. I know you would understand, if I could find the words.

[ she "hms" in thought, lips pressed together. ]

The game we played was called Sgrub, Sburb to humans. Its mechanics are superimposed over our reality, and thus, are able to alter it. The game itself does not come with a clear objective, but my friends and I had our own -- namely that our planet would be destroyed in its entirety if we did not play it.

I can't quite tell you how I knew. That is even more complicated.

[ the she knows he would understand is a point in her favor— nothing pleases piter quite like acknowledging his mental prowess. except maybe murder.

all the same, he throws his hands up in theatrical exasperation once she finishes.
] Yet another reason to add to the myriad of why thinking machines cannot be relied upon.
