Mingle: Event Kick-Off
[ It was mid-morning. The sky was clear and it was a (not so) very blustery day. It was cool but it was always cool. It was neither too warm nor too hot.

Lukewarm.

And that was just how Bak preferred it. Especially since he had in hand his very important, extra special concoction of wonderful forgetfulness on hand! Bak could stand teasing, but even this was getting ridiculous.

Hefting the bag a little higher so it fit snug into the crook between elbow and shoulder, he stepped off into wild world of Marinanova and promptly had to grab onto his hat.

Opps. He always forgot about that step down.

Taking another step, he nearly tripped again, this time on a rock. Frowning, Bak starred at the offending piece of debris and then he kicked it.

And yelped.

And then held his foot, dropping his bag in a near blinding rush of ”Eeeek!” as he dived for the paper bag, watching as with a POOF half of the contents disappeared into the wind, leaving him sneezing and dazed on the ground wondering what the heck had just happened. Clearly, his own formula had been getting the best of him. It happens when one sneaky scientist messes with the formula and Bak spent the better part of the morning putting the final touches of the mixture together.

Heightened emotions indeed.

Bak will rue this day assuming he survived it. ]

((ooc: Consider this post an open mingle and the start of the Marina Feelings Roulette Event! Creating your own posts is, as always, highly encouraged. And, unless you got an extra hefty dose of it right off the bat (re: by being in proximity to Bak when it happened) feelings should gradually start to go haywire later in the day with strongest feelings in the afternoon and tapering off again as evening descends. For more info on the details, please go here. Have fun!))

[ piter has felt rather on-edge today. something has been exacerbating his feelings of powerlessness and vulnerability very subtly, and he is extremely displeased about the fact that he can't quite shake them off. consequentially, he's a bit more scowly than usual and a bit more likely to say rude or brash things. if he has to be upset, so does everyone else. this is precisely how being a supralogical human being works.

except it isn't. part of him recognizes that he feels very off today, and that only serves to make him feel more vulnerable and upset. distractions would be pleasant— he doesn't know it, but he's capable of drowning this anger in giddiness under the right circumstances— though, of course, he'd never admit to that. while sector two is his main haunt, he'll be in and out of sectors five, zero, and occasionally four, while also considering a trip into six for some good old fashioned brutality. he's as all over the place as his emotions are today.

[ aradia figuratively bumps into piter while she's leaving her apartment in sector four. it's more like -- well, she sees him, and something twinges in her chest, and she can't help but approach him, hugging her arms around herself tightly, hood covering her face partially. ]

I know this is really, really weird, but -- ah -- can we, um, maybe talk a little bit? Even if you're ... you. And I'm me. But you're nice to listen to and I'm having a weird day and -- sorry.

[ that may have been one of the strangest requests he's ever received in his life.

he's been asked to perform all sorts of executions and all manner of unspeakable tortures, but never before has a child come to him asking for something so simple, so innocent. even feyd, when he was a tiny child, was never so plaintive— and that doleful manner is strange; he recalls her as a much more bubbly child. and, of course, there's the fact that it's been a very long time since anyone called him such a thing as "nice to listen to" and it meant more to him than a particle of dust.

in all truth, it only means about as much as a crumb, but that crumb is enough to distract him from his pervading anger for a moment.
] Is something wrong with you, girl?

[ there's a caustic hint of incredulity in his voice, a reprimand to her for being so forward and for distracting him from his thoughts, but he doesn't simply brush her off and walk away, though he certainly could— and behind the harshness of his voice is a gentler question: are you well? he wonders if someone has hurt her. ]

I just told you that there was, yes.

[ she sounds exasperated, pleading, vulnerable, such a strange blend of things. she knows how weird this must seem, and it does nothing good for her sense of anxiety, but there's something keeping her from stopping, turning heel. ]

I need ... a distraction, maybe? That might be it.

[ now, that little "i just told you" was rather insolent of her. his face hardens a bit, but... perhaps it could be possible that he hadn't communicated adequately. just for a moment, that is. scowling, he tries again. ] I mean to ask whether you've been wounded. Perhaps you need to sit down.

[ dealing with sad kids is not his specialty. but there are benches around, if she needs to be directed to one? he gestures to one nearby. ]

... Ah. [ he supposes that he understands, however dimly.

as she settles on the bench, he stands before her, looking down at the tiny, vulnerable thing. this is very, very strange. all the more strange is the fact that he doesn't feel 100% compelled to leave her there alone. maybe 47%, which, truth be told, is pretty low.
] What did you wish to speak of?

[ elena is on her way to... the library, she guesses. she hadn't thought on a destination when she left her apartment today, and has taken her time during her walk about the dome, ending up in spontaneous places. (her six-bedroom apartment that housed one less occupant as of yesterday. she'd thought of clearing out jenna's room, standing in the doorway that morning...

the grief she feels tightens in her chest, her throat as she swallows, but it's not a new feeling, and one she has learned to temper.)

she acknowledges piter with a glance and a lackluster and distracted smile (if it can even be called that) as they pass each other and naturally lock eyes - but then she pauses in her next step, pivots back around.
] Uhm, excuse me. You were in Dr. Reid's class. [ it's more of a statement than a question. ]

[ her listless, dismal manner is in some small way apparent to piter, capable of discerning these things as he is, but it hardly concerns him. though he does allow her to stop him, he doesn't put forth the effort to return her smile, and when he speaks, there is a faint but haughty air of impatience to it. ]

Correct. I've not yet missed a class. [ he came in late once because he was committing a murder, but it doesn't technically count as an absence. in any case, elena's face is familiar to him; he can recognize the vast majority of the class's other attendees at a glance, but rarely speaks to them. he could probably stand to be a more sociable classmate. ]

[ elena's missed three, proving marina is not much different from her life in mystic falls. /wry inside joke thought. she smiles a little bit better at piter's comment, offering some quiet amusement over his attendance record mention. her expression sobers; she knows it's an odd question, but it's also one elena's been wondering of everyone in general since the class met last. ] Can I ask why you took the class?

The good doctor's profession has interested me since I first learned of it. [ that is a way better answer than "i'm a serial killer and i think it's hilarious." good save, piter. good save. it is the truth in a way, too— he feels it his duty to know what it is that reid concerns himself with, how the man might be trying to profile him. ]

And, of course, the irony of a criminology class held in a prison is not lost on me.

[ it's also better than elena's answer, which if she were 100% honest would be "i date serial-killing vampires and thought since i was in prison i'd learn a thing or two" so there's that. which is partially why she stopped piter to ask in the first place: because this is prison, so she understands why reid would want to address the obvious, and she understands the obvious reason why people might want to attend.

her eyes raise at the mention of the irony. it's not lost on elena either, but:
] Is it really ironic if we're not all serial killers? [ or belong here at all, is what she's getting at. ]

We may not all be killers, but malevolence lurks in unlikely places. [ a wry smile begins to creep onto his face. ] Perhaps you would know that if you did not practice truancy.

[ of course he has noticed, though it didn't matter to him until now; before classes start, he tends to occupy himself with a quick inventory of those attending, figuring out who is a regular, who came in on a whim, who has disappeared. ] Though I'll not hesitate to say that the punishment rarely fits the crime, in this place— incarceration itself included.

[ Luckily for Reid, he hasn't felt anything off today. Nothing out of the ordinary anyway and he's spending enough energy trying not to think about that, so even if there is something weird going on he hasn't cared to notice it.

He will however notice that particularly sour look on Piter's face and seeing as he genuinely believes they have some kind of bond by now, he will stop to ask gdit. ]

[ reid isn't exactly wrong, but this is absolutely not what piter wanted to have to have to deal with today. after stopping in his tracks, he wheels around to scowl at reid properly, making sure that it's made apparent how bothersome all of this is. ] You should be able to discern such things by now, profiler.

[ delivering that sick burn seems to have helped him to deflate somewhat, however, and his scowl seems to lessen just a bit. ] ... I am not in proper control of my emotions. [ yes, he's figured that much out by now, and it's not doing much to help that angry, vulnerable feeling that's settled in his chest today. ]

[ He'll need some aloe after that sick burn, awyiss. Seriously though, there's some genuine concern stirring here considering what happened not even a week ago. Eyes narrowing, he takes a half-step closer. ]

[ instinct tells him to mirror that half-step forward and intimidate reid away, but intellect tells him that it won't work. he stands his ground, staring back at reid with his stained eyes when really he wants to allow for a moment of weakness and pass a hand over them. one of his hands even twitches upward, but stills midway through the motion, moving instead to clasp its twin behind his back. ]

Sudden feelings of strong emotion; pervading impatience and aggression, namely, that slip out unbidden. [ "impatience and aggression" might sound like his usual self, but the fact that he can't control it as he'd like, can't properly hide behind one of his many masks, unnerves him terribly. he should not be losing control like this. ]

[ He tenses at that, knowing all too well what that could mean. After two months he's more likely to draw the conclusion that something is wrong within the facility rather than assume that it's a natural reaction and having known Piter for half that time only makes it all the clearer. Aside from a few rare occasions, the man is in far too good control of his emotions. It makes profiling hard but now that he's not the one in charge, there's nothing but sympathy.

You can't force emotion out of a Vulcan.

He shifts his weight, bottom lip pinched between his teeth as he hesitates and you can practically see the moment he makes the decision, the slight flinch as he keeps himself from grabbing Piter by the arm. They're not friends but they're two of a kind and that counts for something. ]

Come on. Let's get you somewhere less public.

[ reid's hesitation is all too clear to piter, and something about it is jarring. that flinch— piter sees it with mentat clarity for what it is, and the motive behind it is loathsome to him. he hates that he's shown such vulnerability, enough that someone would seek to reassure him, to save him.

and yet, he does not pull away. he does not turn with a scoff and a flourish and leave reid behind. he does what he's always done with reid— he stays, even if it would be so easy to walk away, to say, "that won't be necessary," and continue on in the opposite direction. if he were thinking more clearly, that would be what he would do. but he isn't. all he can do is stare back at reid with quiet dignity.
] I am not an animal to be led.

[ he is sick to death of following, of trailing behind out of obligation, of being a thing to command and direct. he has some tiny, new amount of freedom here, and he plans to use it well. he will not follow reid— he will walk alongside him. ]

Of course not. I apologize if I gave you that impression.

[ Quiet and polite and perhaps he's starting to figure out which level he should be on with Piter. He walks in silence at a steady pace, not too rushed and not too leisurely, eyes kept firmly on the road ahead. He's not going to push, only escort. Only be there as support in whichever way he can be, like Piter was for him not long ago and perhaps the mentat won't appreciate it but it's there nonetheless. ]

Apology is hardly useful. [ if only he could truly appreciate it— he can value reid's compliance, but companionship and amicability continue to startle him in subtle ways. instead, he merely brushes it off and continues walking, focusing on maintaining some sort of steadiness within himself, some control. ] I would prefer to know our destination.

Actually... I haven't decided on one yet. Do you have anywhere you'd like to go? [ It's not exactly about him, this walk. It's about finding a place Piter would feel safe in. Establish security. Just as much a tactic as a show of friendship, believe it or not. ]
