Mingle: Event Kick-Off
[ It was mid-morning. The sky was clear and it was a (not so) very blustery day. It was cool but it was always cool. It was neither too warm nor too hot.

Lukewarm.

And that was just how Bak preferred it. Especially since he had in hand his very important, extra special concoction of wonderful forgetfulness on hand! Bak could stand teasing, but even this was getting ridiculous.

Hefting the bag a little higher so it fit snug into the crook between elbow and shoulder, he stepped off into wild world of Marinanova and promptly had to grab onto his hat.

Opps. He always forgot about that step down.

Taking another step, he nearly tripped again, this time on a rock. Frowning, Bak starred at the offending piece of debris and then he kicked it.

And yelped.

And then held his foot, dropping his bag in a near blinding rush of ”Eeeek!” as he dived for the paper bag, watching as with a POOF half of the contents disappeared into the wind, leaving him sneezing and dazed on the ground wondering what the heck had just happened. Clearly, his own formula had been getting the best of him. It happens when one sneaky scientist messes with the formula and Bak spent the better part of the morning putting the final touches of the mixture together.

Heightened emotions indeed.

Bak will rue this day assuming he survived it. ]

((ooc: Consider this post an open mingle and the start of the Marina Feelings Roulette Event! Creating your own posts is, as always, highly encouraged. And, unless you got an extra hefty dose of it right off the bat (re: by being in proximity to Bak when it happened) feelings should gradually start to go haywire later in the day with strongest feelings in the afternoon and tapering off again as evening descends. For more info on the details, please go here. Have fun!))

[Sam is in the library a lot of today, and no one was surprised. Today, he's preparing for his new class starting tomorrow. So, right now he has books on ghosts spread around him.]

(OOC: He's basically neutral until he runs into someone and reacts to their chemistry with the event. I'm open to any kind of reaction. Tag me, and I'll chose one or if you have a preference just let me know. I'm also fine with no strong emotional reaction if you want him to be normal while your character is affected.)

[The library is still a safe zone, isn't it? As far as she knows, a certain vampire hunter doesn't often visit this place. But then again, she's not really considering what other ones might be around. Yuuki herself has only come here today to sit in a quiet, undisturbed area, and try to continue writing out lyrics and her own thoughts.

She pauses though, when she notices Sam. Undecided thoughts churn. He's a lot like Zero, isn't he... occupation wise, anyway. Yet, despite initial mistrust, he's still kind. It looks like he's studying hard. She should't interrupt him, but for whatever reason, her feet draw her near.]

Morning.

[She blinks down at the books sprawled across the table.]

Are you always studying up on the supernatural?

[Although ghosts are a little creepy, if you ask Yuuki.]

[Missing one vampire hunter and gaining another. Of course Sam hardly considers himself a vampire hunter. As far as he knows they are a minor problem back home. His own thoughts lie with demons more than even the ghosts or other assorted monsters he hunts. Still, he's had his share of vampire problems at home and here. He did go after Zelman after he drank from Sasha after all.

And yet he knows Yuuki is a vampire, but he finds himself liking her. She made some compelling arguments she doesn't even seem to remember, but he does. He can't be sure it's real and not some kind of act, and he's been doing this too long to not have at least some residual doubt, but he wants to believe it. He wants to see the good in people when he can.

Today, when she shows up to interrupt his studies he feels a little more inclined to put them aside for her than he might on another occasion. Maybe it's that he's a little burnt out on reading or maybe it's something else.

He laughs a little at the question.]

It does seem like that, doesn't it? [There's a little head shake.] I'm putting some notes together for a class I'm going to be teaching soon.

Ah...

[Moving around, she lightly picks up one of his closed books, and glances over the title.]

You're really hard at work. If it's a class on the supernatural, that might be kind of fun to attend.

[Just to see what is said, and maybe the differences between their worlds. Whether or not he even focuses on vampires at all.]

It is. Paranormal Studies. [He wasn't sure what to call it.] It's open to everyone if you want to check it out. [Even vampires are welcome which means he knows he has some extra work to do in making everything sound less...hunt-y.]

The first class is going to be on ghosts. [Which felt like the safest topic for a lot of reasons.]

To be honest I still wonder about the average person's creepy view on vampires...

[People saying they are undead and brought back to life. How disturbing.]

If I saw a ghost, I am sure it would be terrifying! What if it haunted you? Or tried to possess someone?

[UGH. Shudder. How would someone even begin to fight against something that is dead?]

Well...those things happen sometimes. What do you mean by creepy view on vampires? [Genuinely curious.]

[CREEPY CREEPY. She prefers not meeting any ghosts, thank you very much. The question causes her to make a face, though.]

People who say that vampire are dead. Or are somehow connected to dark things, like the devil.

[Not even close]

While I understand the fear a vampire's diet might bring... understandably.

[When you consider their typical prey]

But it's not like we're all some creepy disease ridden, underground monsters that go around indiscriminately attacking people. We're born, have mothers and fathers, and have to learn to walk and talk and feel just the same as human children would.

[Because dead...]

If they were actually dead, doesn't that make them a zombie?

Well... No, zombies are different. ["Come on, you've seen the movies," is a bad argument, isn't it?] And I'm sure you're right. In some worlds—mine actually—vampires aren't dead. They're changed.

...But they're changed a lot.

[Jean-Luc is in the library as well. It's usually the place he can be found every day. But it's the nature on the books he spies spread out in front of the young man sitting at the table that catches his attention. What might normally be a curious glance turns into such a feeling of need to answer that curiousness, that he does more than glance. He moves closer and strikes up a conversation.]

I suppose it would be safe to assume you've an interest in the paranormal given the light reading you've accumulated here.

This place does seem to offer its fair share of academia. [Which leaves him with little surprise that this will soon be added to the curriculum. However, he does recognize that this is an interesting topic that not just anyone would be so well-versed in as to teach a class on it.]

Teaching an entire course on the subject of the paranormal would imply that you've played witness to any number of fascinating occurrences.

[He might normally try to hide this a little better, but today he's feeling friendlier. Maybe more open, but just sort of looking to connect. He doesn't give it much thought yet. After all it hasn't come up much alone with his books.]

I guess they're fascinating looking back at them. Sometimes when you're in the middle of facing off against something it's hard to take time just to be impressed. [Actually, it wasn't something he usually afforded himself. After all, he's there to kill these things.]

Facing off against what, exactly? Specters? Ghosts?

Sometimes. [Sam is kind of amused by "specters" but he's not letting it show.] Do you believe they exist? [Sam knows they do at least in his own world, but he always likes to know if he sounds crazy at least.]

Oh... [As he briefly considers this, he leans back in the chair and gives the hem of his uniform top a curt tug. He crosses one leg over the other and smooths his fingertips thoughtfully over his lips.]

Even as prone to logic as I like to consider myself, I would say I've witnessed too much of the spectacular and unexplained in the Universe to ever decisively discount the idea that spectacular and unexplained things could occur planet side as well. I would also add that those same unexplained phenomena are what keep humanity in an ever evolving state of growth. Curiosity. The pursuit of answers. The will to survive. [He pauses.] To answer your question, in spite of my never having played witness to such things, I cannot allow myself to ignore the possibility that they might exist.

...Right. [That was quite the speech. Sam feels like there should have been more of an audience for it. Then again, it was also interesting. It might remind him of a more human version of an angel he knows. At least in a small part.]

They do, but most people think they're stories. [At this point what's the harm in just telling people the truth? Shielding them from it kind of became pointless once an underwater, interdimensional prison got involved.] The thing is most legends begin with some truth. It just gets distorted over time.

An insight we can both agree on. [And honestly, Jean-Luc liked the idea that most legends began with some sort of truth and then, over time, morphed into the more common form of how people perceived them.]

And you have first-hand experience with such things.

A paranormal expert of sorts. That is interesting. There must be ample opportunity for involvement in the paranormal in your world to make a career out of it. I'm curious as to how you operate. Do people call you when they experience something... something that cannot be easily explained?

[The thing about careers is that they normally pay. This one just takes.] Sometimes, but most people don't know these things are real, so they don't know who to call unless they've already been through something before. Usually, it's a matter of tracking the signs to take care of it.
