Who: Claudia and HG
What: HG is shopping for an engagement ring AKA a day of buying Claudia food, possibly a new pair of shoes, and teasing the flailing Victorian author.
When: Sunday afternoon
Where: Various jewelry shops about the city
Warnings: Should be low as the worst that could happen is occasional cursing.
Status: Closed/incomplete

This was most certainly not the first trip Helena had taken to jewelry shops in the city. She'd done so on several previous occasions. Between utilizing trips for things such as groceries and clothing, and leaving earlier for her shifts at work, she'd all ready had a list of possibilities for the ring she'd buy for Myka. Now, Helena knew what style she was looking for, that wasn't the issue. The issue was more that Helena found several potentials within the parameters she was working within, and Helena was having trouble narrowing down the one that would be perfect. There were days when Helena thought she'd found the ring, but there was always something that ended up being wrong or not good enough in her opinion. As if one could really go wrong with diamond rings, but Helena was certain one could go wrong with a diamond ring. Which was exactly why she'd asked for Claudia's eye to assist. Sometimes a second opinion helped matters. Not to mention Helena was probably looking too hard to find imperfections or holding standards far too high because this wasn't about the ring, it was about the love that she and Myka shared.

Even so, the Victorian woman was still incredibly picky and felt Myka deserved only the best. Though in an attempt to not be out the entire day, Helena had made note of a few of her top choices for rings to show to Claudia for her opinion. After meeting Claudia at the appointed hour, they set off into the city, Helena choosing on of the jewelry shops she'd all ready been in for their initial stop. On the way, she'd enlightened Claudia to the type of ring she was looking at, which was a diamond solitaire with a white gold band. At their initial stop, Helena had pointed out one possibility. While it was rather symbolic as to the Halloween costume Helena had chosen and later actually became, she ended up ruling it out almost as soon as she'd pointed it out to Claudia. It was too flashy for Myka's tastes. So that ring abandoned, Helena turned back to the rest of the selection of diamond solitaire rings available in the store, but she didn't see anything else there she liked. Which was possibly a good thing because Helena wanted her list of possible rings to get shorter not longer today. If Lady Luck was smiling on her today, she hoped to have the ring by day's end otherwise she would start to get more than a little antsy given the day she wished to propose on was fast approaching.

"All right, to another store. I at least narrowed the possibilities down instead of adding to them?" Helena said to Claudia. Though Helena didn't exactly fear adding to the list given she was perhaps over-analytical about rings and felt none were good enough for Myka. The rings she'd found so far were either too simple or too complex. There were, however, two other rings on her list that were close to the perfect ring, so showing them to Claudia would hopefully prove to be something of a help.

Claudia hadn't even had time, nor need, to pull her phone out and start playing Star Wars: Angry Birds. She was rather sure there was probably something wrong with her enjoyment of the game, considering she knew or had met a few people from the Star Wars universe, so she was kind of flinging a kind of Luke Skywalker at kind of Darth Vader who was kind of Anakin Skywalker.

But Angry Birds was rightfully addicting.

"Shiny but not shiny. Yes, narrowed down." Claudia teased, shoving her hands in her pocket as she walked after H.G. In truth, Claudia didn't mind going ring shopping with H.G. That didn't mean she wasn't going to tease the heck out of H.G. over the process. As Claudia saw it, teasing lessened the nerve related parts of the fact that they were looking at wedding rings. "You know Myka won't answer based on the ring itself, right? Just - checking before we hit the next store."

It was no doubt a fact that Helena was taking this ring shopping far too seriously. She knew Myka wouldn't answer based on the ring, but Helena had a picture in her mind of how the ring should look and how the proposal would go, and she would not abide for anything less than what she pictured. Though on the flip side of that, Helena was entirely nervous about the entire situation. So really, the teasing was welcome as it helped to pull her away from her inner monologue over things as they went.

"It is much like a riddle, is it not? Shiny but not shiny," she teased back with a smile at Claudia before leading the way to the next stop. "I know she won't answer based on the ring. Unless I purchase an incredibly expensive ring, then she probably would say no. But I am not going to that extreme." The rings she was looking at were typically running in the neighborhood of $3,000, which was perfectly reasonable. Brushing a hand through her hair, she drew in a breath and let it out slowly.

"You know, I never envisioned myself as the marrying type. Though I suppose things change when you meet the right person." She glanced at Claudia. "Though it most certainly helps that Myka is female. Had I fallen for a man, I would not even consider marriage." She had very specific reasons for that given to her, marriage to a man meant the man held all the power and control in the relationship, and Helena refused to be controlled by anyone in such a way. She was not going to subservient to anyone and expected to be so.

"Shiny but not shiny, sparkly but without too much sparkle. I would say that's artifact-level riddle." Claudia teased, her attention momentarily being distracted by a nearby store front. There was a black jacket with military style buttons. It held potential for Claudia customizing. She would have to go back and check it out later.

She turned back to H.G and made a face. "Modern marriage really isn't ye olde days, guy or girl or - two guys or two girls. But since we don't have to contemplate it, since Myka isn't a guy, I'll just say good that you found the right person. Now we have to make sure you don't have blood pressure through the roof by the time all of this gets settled. Do we need to stop in a drug store and do a blood pressure test?"

"Only the artifact we are currently hunting has the power to make me nervous and anxious to an extent I never knew I could be nervous or anxious." Helena did know she had to be careful in how she did this. Stress and anxiety had wonderful and tricky ways of manifesting themselves in a stroke or heart attack at any age. Or it could manifest in other ways, such as her getting ill once again. Which she really didn't need, especially not now. She needed to remain as calm as she possibly could lest she turn into the queen once again.

"I do need to keep reminding myself of that fact. May I say that the fact two women or two men having the option and ability to be married is now is simply brilliant? That is societal evolution that I am more than happy to see and be able to take part in." And there was a warm smile that seemed to cross her face more often of late when she thought about that and being with Myka. It was better than dwelling on the bad things that had happened of late and the fact she was still not exactly in the best place mentally or emotionally after the Reavers had gone through the city. But this was a much needed influx of levity and focusing on something good, even if her blood pressure was threatening to sky rocket. "I do not know, do I look as though my blood pressure is at a dangerous level? I do not feel as though that is the case. Not quite yet, anyway. Give me a couple hours and such action might need to be taken."

"Downside, anxiousness and nervousness. Upside, making Myka go-" Claudia proceeded to make a fake excited face, of course going over the top with it in an attempt to be quite silly. She figured it was a good way to diffuse the situation a little.

Still, she didn't lose step in following after H.G. as they went toward the next jeweler. "For all the ways society isn't evolving, I'm glad we have a good one for you. And I don't know if your blood pressure looks high." She looked at H.G., as if she could suddenly take her blood pressure by sight. Really, though, she had a lot of experience assessing blood pressure by looking at Artie. She didn't want to bring the topic of Artie up in that moment though. "We can see about the blood pressure when lunch rolls around, then!"

Upon seeing the face Claudia made, Helena couldn't help but laugh. Which was certainly an excellent way to diffuse any situation. Well, most situations. "I dare say if Myka makes that face upon my proposing to her, I could not take her seriously after that." And there was another fit of laughter upon imagining such a look on Myka's face.

While Claudia may be able to read Artie's blood pressure with a look, Helena wasn't so readable in such ways. Her telltale signs were far more subtle. But she doubted those would come out in this situation. That would no doubt be something for closer to the date of the proposal and the evening of proposing. "If I did not know better, I would think you are only concerned about my blood pressure because you do not want me turning into the queen again." She arched a brow at Claudia before smirking and turning down another street.

Leading the way into that jeweler, Helena tucked some hair behind her ear and moved over to one of the cases, her eyes scanning the contents scrutinizingly. There was a ring here that was on her short list of potentials. The trick was finding it again as there were a few potentials in this particular shop. "There was a ring here that is on my list. It may end up on the too much sparkle side of things, but I liked the way it looked." Though after some moments of looking, her gaze found the ring. "Oh there it is, that one," she said pointing it out to Claudia.

"Okay, so maybe Myka's will be a little less surprised. But you get the idea." Claudia remarked, all too happy (and not hiding it at all) that she had gotten a laugh out of H.G. At the same time, she also was (admittedly) amused at the remark about H.G. turning into a queen again, so that helped perk her up too. "And I'm always ready to step in and be the royal pain, so - debatable."

"Oh!" Claudia leaned over and inspected the ring, thoughtfully, before looking back to H.G. with a hint of suspicion. "Is it coincidental that it has a mesh of dark and light with the big stone in the middle being light - thus light 'winning' out so to speak, or is that something that might have added to why you like it?"

"Well, it is debatable, I believe. After all, I'm attempting to surprise her completely with this proposal." Still, it was more than an amusing thought. It still wasn't the reaction Helena preferred to see on Myka's face upon proposing, but sometimes one just needed to make do. Though she cast an arched brow and bit of a smirk in Claudia's direction at the royal pain comment. "You do so enjoy that role. Where others seem fit to call you Devil Child, I think I will just call you Royal Pain." There was no shortage of amusement in Helena's voice upon that response.

At Claudia's judgement of the ring, Helena looked at her, then back at the ring. This was exactly why she'd asked for Claudia's opinion in the first place because she caught things like that and it would help Helena know if she was trying too hard. "No, not a coincidence. Though hearing it outloud, I should probably not be looking into things so deeply. I probably shouldn't bring any shade of darkness into this, it's supposed to be a happy event, not one bogged down in darkness." So mentally, Helena scratched that ring off the list. She wanted Myka to be reminded of their love when she looked at the ring, not reminded of everything else. Helena sighed softly and turned her eye to the other rings. As much as she wanted to keep things simple, she could not help putting in imagery and metaphors wherever she could. She was a writer, after all.

"Demon Child, Devil Child, Royal Pain - I'm expanding my circle. Really, there are good things to be said about that." Claudia remarked back, crossing her arms and looking over at H.G. when she admitted that the specifics of the shiny ring hadn't been coincidental.

"I would say you could do something with dark and light stones for - an anniversary. Something like a necklace or a pendant, where you want to express this point and how she's the light part to you. For proposal, I would say you could focus on just shiny without being too shiny." Claudia said with a small nod, really not disliking the idea of the ring's setup itself. It, maybe, just wasn't what H.G. was trying to say in the current situation. "Any other rings here, then, or do we need to wear down my shoe soles more?"

"It is never a drawback to expand one's circle," Helena commented with a smile. Claudia certainly did earn her nicknames. Or at least she'd earned the royal pain one as far as Helena was concerned. The other two, well, Helena could see where they could come from.

Listening to Claudia's suggestion, Helena wondered if it was even necessary for such symbolism. After all, Helena had all ready given Myka a necklace with an open heart pendant to symbolize the fact Helena had opened her heart to her. It was running along the same line of symbolize as the darkness versus light metaphor. Running both of her hands through her hair, she drew in a slow breath. "There are times when I wish the author in me would not run so rampant with metaphorical references." So sticking to the light because, well, Myka was the light to Helena's darkness. She wouldn't precisely say as much in so many words, but Helena did still have a very harsh and negative view of herself. Though she had been making progress on that. At least until James had died in her arms and undone a lot of the progress she'd made.

"I do fear we need to wear down the soles of your shoes some more." So with that it was off to another jeweler. The one she led them to had a couple potentials in it, though upon their arrival, Helena quickly located the area with the two potentials. Though upon seeing one again, she instantly ruled it out without even pointing it out to Claudia. The other potential she did point out, though she also ruled that one out. While its only gem was the single diamond, something about it just wasn't right. A little more time was spent there scrutinizing the rest of the rings in the event something else jumped out at her, but Helena didn't find anything there. Which left one other jeweler to visit as the last potential still on her list was there.

"All right, and again needing to go to another jeweler. This one is, however, a little ways off, so if you wanted to stop for lunch on the way, we most certainly can." Helena said, leaving the store and heading in the direction of the jeweler she had in mind. Though she would let Claudia take the lead in where they would stop, if anywhere, along the way for lunch.

Claudia didn't really say anything about the author in H.G. or her wishes about it. The simple fact was that Claudia didn't know what to say about it. Claudia didn't know what H.G.'s opinion of herself was or that James' temporary death had undone significant progress in relation to it. Really, Claudia didn't even know James outside of passing glances on the network and so forth. She knew that his death had been upsetting for H.G., of course, but not how much. She didn't know H.G.'s problems with Christina in-depth either, outside of the TV show and what she had gathered in passing. It wasn't exactly a topic that seemed good to bring up, because why would H.G. want to talk about it? Claudia couldn't imagine the pain of losing a child or what it would do to a mind, but she also knew that H.G. wasn't a serial killer or anything like that. She liked having H.G. around and considered her part of the weirdness that was her extended family.

"Okay, lunch. Hmm." Claudia paused and pondered, then a hint of a devious glint came into her eye. "Down this way. I know exactly what I want."

Claudia lead H.G. to a barbecue place. Yes, she had deliberately picked somewhere with food that was meant to be eaten with hands and be messy. She wanted to see how the prim and proper H.G. would handle such a thing. Would H.G. poke at the food with a fork and try to eat it with proper table manners? Claudia suspected as much, but she still figured this might be amusing.

"And if we pass a shoe store, we might have to stop in if this next place is too far off. Or craft store so I can get some paint for my new shoes."

There was certainly a fine line between Helena not wanting to talk about things and her burying the feelings deep within herself. She was trying not to bury them inside her as that was part of the reason she'd followed the path of murder and destruction that nearly resulted in her destroying the world. But even as pressing as James' death was weighing on her, now was not the time to talk about such things. It was not a subject for public discussion, and besides, this was supposed to be an exciting outing. Well, once Helena could pick a ring out.

Helena caught that devious glint and a slight pang of worry ran through her. One should always be on guard in such cases. The place Claudia had taken her too was, well, slightly horrifying. Clearly this was an American thing because it certainly wasn't English. Clearly Claudia wanted to see how she would respond in such a situation. Of course, Helena thought that was a positively barbaric means of eating.

"Is this meant to be some subtle hint that you are more connected to your primal ancestors than you lead us to believe?" Because why not tease Claudia about it? There was a bit of a smirk on her face as she was seeing a connection to a time when primal man ate such food only in a more raw state at times. But of course, Helena was still inwardly horrified because really, how was one supposed to eat that?

"We can certainly stop at a shoe or craft store should your shoes feel the need to give up the ghost upon heading to the next stop."

Claudia would've hoped that Myka had been able to help H.G. on some level, had she known just how much James' death was weighing on the Victorian woman. Really, though, Claudia was becoming disconnected from Myka. As a whole, though, Claudia's mind didn't linger on such things. Rather, her mind had focused on her devious plan to get H.G. in a barbecue place. Going inside, she could only smile.

"I don't think the primal ancestors used barbecue sauce, let alone - looks like there are eight different options! I'd advise avoiding the hottest." There was a sign that indicated the different sauce types. The entire place had pig decorations around in it; it was, truly, a place that she figured H.G. was completely out of place in. It made Claudia grin a bit. If this didn't make H.G. forget about the focus on and around rings and proposing, she didn't know what would.

"Are you going to take an extra long way as revenge for me picking here?" Claudia asked with a grin as they were directed to a booth.

Claudia was right in her assumption, Helena did feel extremely out of place in there. Though she couldn't deny that the scents she picked up did smell good, which only served to rouse her hunger. However, that didn't mean she wasn't out of place. Helena wasn't a snob, well not typically anyway, but she couldn't help but feel Claudia had picked this place deliberately. As such, she cast Claudia a bit of a pointed and knowing look.

"No, they did not use barbeque sauce. Though I am certain knowing what they used for sauce would put both of us off of eating." If one could call this eating. Oh she spied some of the other people in there eating with their hands and some were making quite the mess. Suddenly she had a vision of Claudia flicking barbeque sauce at her if she somehow managed to remain pristine while eating. That vision in and of itself was horrifying. It was one thing to be dirty from exercise and chasing down artifacts. It was quite another to have things meant to be eaten thrown at you.

"I have yet to decide upon that," she returned with a slightly suspicious look at the other woman as she took her seat. This was certainly not a place where Helena ever envisioned herself eating at. As such to Claudia's eyes, she did seem slightly uncomfortable, or perhaps out of her element was more accurate.

Claudia was grinning, not ashamed at all despite the looks. Rather, she shrugged and pointed out with no hesitation whatsoever, "You told me I could pick anywhere I wanted." She rather thought the look on H.G.'s face meant that she had gotten her revenge for the tripod. It was funny because, really, she hadn't even given that much thought to it. It had been a decision made in the moment.

"I might have to buy insoles, too, if you do. We could always see about getting you a bib?" Claudia smiled, unabashedly, in that moment. She knew H.G. had forgotten about the stress of picking out a ring. Claudia decided to add to the horror, grabbing a menu and starting to look at it. "Maybe I'll get some of the pork sliders - little sandwiches with pulled pork, smothered in drippy barbecue sauce..."

Helena wasn't going to argue the point because, well, she had said Claudia could pick anywhere she wanted. So she would just need to suck it up as best as she possibly could. She would find some way to get out of this place without ruining any of her clothing. Well, hopefully. It was going to certainly be a difficult task, but Helena was determined to see it come to pass.

Though the bib comment was the icing on the cake. Helena cast Claudia a bit of a pointed look. "I am not a child, Claudia." Though she could see where a bib may come in handy in this place, but she was determined to get through this on her own merit and ability to eat without making a mess. Though the food itself being a mess proved a challenge, but it was one she was going to meet head on. Taking the menu, she looked it over, wondering what she could possibly choose off the menu. Really, she wasn't H.G. Wells if she didn't rise to a challenge, so she wasn't going to stop that now. Even if Claudia's comment made her cringe inwardly.

"Well I have to say, the ribs do sound marvelous," which wasn't exactly a lie. They did sound good. They were just frightening because they were finger food with sauce smothered all over them. But she would be damned if she didn't rise to this rather obvious challenge, and distraction, that Claudia had presented her with.

"Oh, they make adult-sized bibs for barbeque and for seafood places. No idea if this place has bibs, though." Claudia answered back with an innocent smile, though how genuinely innocent she was could have been debated or argued. Then again, such was the way of Claudia at times.

"Let's just order now then." Claudia grinned as a waiter came over in jeans and a black pig themed t-shirt with a gaudy looking name tag pinned onto it. In a way, she was introducing H.G. to some American culture. Even if it was on another planet, it seemed far too perfect. That wasn't to mention the distraction it offered.

She ordered a soda and the pork sliders, then turned to H.G. to see if the author would follow through with what she had said.

Helena wasn't certain she should be horrified or amused that places made bibs for adults. She went with being horrified to coincide with the rest of her feelings on this setting. That innocent smile wasn't working on Helena, it was more than obvious Claudia had chosen this place on purpose.

The "uniform" the waiter wore also horrified Helena's Victorian sensibilities which were still very much in tact despite the amount of time she'd spent in the modern world. She was certainly a case of you could take the woman out of Victorian England but you couldn't take Victorian England out of the woman. Still, Helena did follow through with ordering the ribs, though she opted for water as her beverage. She had yet to really take a liking to pop and other such beverages that Claudia favoured.

After the waiter left, Helena glanced over the surroundings again. The place suddenly reminded her of lower class pubs that she occasionally had to enter while searching for artifacts. Though this place was significantly cleaner than those pubs had been, but still. This was so very...American.

"I feel like I'm in the wild west," she commented, eyeing some of the decorations, if they could even be called that, suspiciously.

"Maybe the upper south, or some chain place in the deep south. Not really a dive, but - this place has a vibe." Claudia had actually gotten some of their stuff to go before, so she knew it was all pretty good. Still, the mess and setting had been too perfect to pass up.

"They have t-shirts like the waiter had on that can be bought. Do you want one?" Claudia had a really hard time saying that with a straight face. "Hey, if we're going to be taking the super long way walking, I'm going to earn it."

When Claudia mentioned the whole bit about being the south, Helena took another look around. Admittedly, she had not spent overly much time traveling the United States aside from her trip to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the places she'd gone to after being unbronzed. But she had seen glimpses of the south when she'd ventured to Fort Lauderdale to locate the Corsican Vest. She looked back at Claudia with a bit of a wrinkle to her nose. "It certainly does have a vibe," she agreed.

At the t-shirt comment, Helena could only stare at Claudia as though she had just severely blasphemed God in the Vatican. "No, I do not want a t-shirt like that, thank you." Now Helena was starting to move beyond being horrified into a realm she couldn't quite put a description to. Though the place seemed to be a slight paradox. While the decor and messy food put Helena off, the smell of the food was more than appealing. As such, she wasn't certain whether to settle down or not. She wasn't precisely fidgeting, but she wasn't precisely sitting still either. Her typically impeccable posture seemed slightly askew currently.

In a way, Claudia might have blasphemed God in the Vatican. She had certain problems with accepting limitations, though her time in the insane asylum had given her a certain level of exposure to religion. Still, the look H.G. gave her was more than enough to give Claudia the general idea of what she was thinking.

"Fine!" H.G. was getting one of those shirts, eventually, when the timing was right. "Anything interesting happen at work lately? Or - would you rather sit in mild silence while you wonder and plan how to keep clean and get me back for this?"

Claudia would have been just as happy either way, because the waiter came back with their drinks. It was a short waiting game at that point.

Even with Claudia's response, Helena was suspicious of what plans were being thought of in that other woman's head. But she would let it go for the time being. There was no use in debating the topic any further than they had. No doubt such talk would only give Claudia more ideas, and that was not precisely something Helena needed in this instance.

Upon receiving her drink, Helena took a sip of the water. "There have been a couple instances with drunks, but nothing overly interesting." She looked at Claudia. "And do not let that get back to Myka. Nothing happened involving me, but I do not need her standing guard every time I work. Though it would be quite stimulating to see her in such a mode." Helena smirked a bit, entertaining that thought as she took another drink from her water, letting Claudia mull that image over. Or not.

Claudia made a face, trying to reflect the idea that she objected to the mental image H.G. had painted in her mind. She took a very long drink of her soda before sputtering out, "Sitting in silence it is. Or I can ramble about how the server overhaul at work has been going, since all of that would mean absolutely nothing to you."

But the truth was that, even if ribs took awhile, it wasn't going to take too long for the order. The barbecue place made enough ribs each day that they could just have orders ready to go at very quick notice and not fear the product going to waste.

And, thus, the challenge for H.G. to eat without making a mess was ominously and menacingly looming in the near future.

"As positively fascinating as that would be, it would be largely meaningless to me, unfortunately. Which is something I should work on remedying." Sipping her water, she was debating taking courses at the university come the fall. Up until fairly recently, she hadn't known what she even wanted to study given her varied and very diverse interests. But she seemed to now be leaning more towards learning about electronics and the inner workings of machines. It would certainly help if she could learn such things so she didn't have to rely on Claudia or Anakin teaching her when she wanted to build robots and the like.

So it was sitting in silence and Helena was coming up with a battle plan. Because the meal she was about to embark upon was a battle. Anything as messy as what she'd seen transpire at other tables in the restaurant should be considered a battle. But Claudia's plan of distracting Helena from worrying too much over engagement ring choices was working. That was, for the moment, far from the forefront of her mind. Now in its place was mild worry and strategizing how to not make a mess of herself.

Though once their food came out, Helena actually stared at the ribs for a minute or two, her face contorted into a look that was somewhere between horrified and repulsed. But she was not to be defeated by this. No, she would somehow succeed in this endeavour if it killed her. Taking a napkin and setting it on her lap, Helena again hesitated, trying to decide whether to attack the food with silverware as civilized people were supposed to eat, or if she would stoop to the barbaric gesture of using her fingers.

Claudia smirked and wrapped her hands around the small pork slider bun, letting sauce go onto her fingers as she raised the food to take a bite. The barbecue sauce didn't go past her fingers, really, but a small amount of it slid out of the bun and fell onto the plate below. It looked dramatic, it looked messy.

Claudia paused after she had chewed and swallowed to look at H.G. in a pointed manner. "Aren't you going to eat?" Of course, Claudia had dove into her food. It wasn't a question for her. It was all about the challenge to H.G.
