The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

Oh, that sounded like a tough call. Rose was inclined to go with the powdered sugar and chocolate syrup because apples were too healthy for fair food, but she guessed it would probably taste like apple pie and that was delicious.

"Why don't you get one and I'll get the other and we can share them both," she suggested. Sure, she had no idea who this woman was, but that didn't matter when there was delicious deep fried food to bond over.

"You're my new best friend," Pepper decided, "and those'll be my treat because you're doing me a favor." She gestured toward the funnel cake stand's line. "I'm Pepper, by the way," she added, introducing herself with another smile. "I haven't been to a fair like this since I was a little girl, but funnel cake was always a must have." She remembered always asking for extra powdered sugar and thinking she was so sneaky when her mom had okayed it behind her back. That kind of clarity only came with time.

"Has this happened before?" It seemed that way, but it was honestly a little hard for her to remember that the network was something for her to use all the time. Even without work to occupy her time constantly, Pepper had never relied on the internet all that much if it wasn't related to work. It was very nice to unplug for a while.

Dimitri would shake his head at Rose making friends this way. It was better than punching people though. "I'm Rose," she said, moving to get in line for the funnel cakes. She could always come back later for corndogs or other goodies.

"Yeah, the fair was here last year around this time," she said. "We get a lot of weird things. This is one of the nicer ones. Though a few months ago, we all got sent on a cruise for like, a week and a half. That was great. My husband and I used it as a belated honeymoon."

It was still weird to refer to Dimitri as her husband, even thought they'd been married for six months now.

"It's nice to meet you, Rose. I'm Pepper," she replied as they got in line. It seemed like Rose had been around for a little while, which meant she probably had a wealth of information to share and Pepper was always grateful for more context. Rose would've been here at least a year if she remembered the last fair, but weird things happening?

"Just how weird does it get?" she asked, more curious than anything. Fairs and cruises were nice, but she'd been with Tony long enough to know that weird didn't always mean good. It sometimes meant one giant mess. Pepper could tell that Rose was happy though, and she clearly had people in town that she cared for and cared about her. It was always good to see that it was possible to have a life here, even if she couldn't quite believe it.

"Pretty weird," Rose said. "We had vampires attack our wedding. There were also dinosaurs once. And we had a week of random monster attacks last summer." Those were probably the worst of the weird things. "Every so often, our potential future kids show up. And sometimes people will swap bodies or disappear for a few days and come back with new memories."

Those were the most common weird things she could think of.

A vampire attack? That sounded like quite a ruined wedding to her, but Rose didn't seem bothered by it at all, or any of it really. Pepper was a bit concerned about that, but she didn't let it show. "That sounds like it can be a bit dangerous around here, both physically and emotionally." God help her if a future child of her's and Tony's showed up. There was no sense in borrowing trouble though, so she put the thought from her mind.

"I think I'll just enjoy the good weird things while I can then," Pepper replied easily as they stepped up to order their funnel cakes. She took care of paying as promised and then turned back to Rose with a smile. "And that includes making a new friend and eating an entire funnel cake each."

That sounded about right and Rose nodded as she stepped up to the counter to pick up the other funnel cake so they could get to enjoying their deep fried treats. "There are people here who are equipped for handling the physical threats," she said. "If you're not one of them, we usually recommend that you stay inside when that stuff happens." Her use of 'we' was a hint that she might not be a normal young woman.

"As for the emotional danger, well, that pretty much sums up this entire place," she said. "Because people come and go constantly and you never know when someone important is going to leave." Or when you're going to be blindsided with your criminal father showing up.

There were a smattering of tables nearby the food, so Pepper led them over to an empty one so they could eat and talk without making too much of a mess. "I can take care of myself, but I'm not so sure 'superhero' is ever going to be part of my resume," Pepper replied. Extremis was one of the few areas in her life that she wasn't confident in the same was she was confident in every other aspect of her life. Even covering it with a smile didn't hide it all the way. She hardly batted an eye at the implication that Rose fell in the category of 'superhero', long ago having learned not to judge anyone on their appearance alone.

"It's already been a bit of a doozy, emotionally speaking," she admitted, though she didn't quite want to get into it. "But, it's also an opportunity to take a break and focus on myself. I've put myself first once in the last decade. I think it's about time I make it a more regular thing, don't you?" Her smile reached her eyes that time, because that was the sort of approach she wanted to take in Madison Valley.

"I'm sorry," Rose said. "That does happen a lot around here. But I do think you should make the most of the opportunity." She certainly was doing her best to do the same. Especially now with only Jill in town who needed Guarding, she was able to spend her time in ways that she never would have thought possible. And sure, she would trade all that in a heartbeat if Lissa ever returned, but for now, it was a nice break from her life at home.

Pepper seemed like a pretty put together kind of person and Rose was wondering what sort of thing she did for herself. "There is a day spa here," she said. "If you're into that sort of thing."

Pepper figured she was actually pretty lucky all things considered, but it was still something that she was adjusting to as she settled in. She'd need to find a job of some kind to ensure she had the money to treat herself to wine, manicures, and shopping to say the least. At the mention of a day spa, Pepper looked visibly excited. "Day spas are my happy place," she replied with an easy grin. Her favorite thing to do was to book an entire day's worth of spa treatments once a month.

"They're just as good as funnel cake, and you can't go wrong with a bottle of wine. I don't get the feeling there are a lot of designer clothing stores around here, but I'm sure there's a mall around here." It was unfathomable for her to think that there wasn't a mall, but even that wouldn't hold a candle to 5th Avenue or the designer boutiques she frequented. Even so, Pepper knew her style was classic enough that she'd have no problem rebuilding her closet once she had the necessary cash.

The shopping around here was nothing compared to New York City or any other big city, but it wasn't terrible. Then again, Rose was pretty used to wearing her Guardian blacks back home and not having much occasion for nicer things. "The shopping here isn't bad," she said. "I can give you some suggestions on places to check out."

Even though Pepper was a few years older, Rose had a feeling that they would get along and she was glad that they'd run into each other.
