Effie was taking advantage of the warm weather, and sitting out on the porch of the house with her pillow on her lap. Her feet were tucked up on a stool, as she still had lingering nerves about whatever those metal skittering things had been returning, and she was certain those had been responsible for the damage to her threads. Such a little thing, in appearance, but so much to her. The box of threads was at her side, another box of bobbins next to it, and she was trying to wind pairs to start the next pattern.

Trying. The thread came to an abrupt end again, and she swore fervently, very Glaswegian and thoroughly unladylike, before glancing up and blushing hard, eyes widening as she caught sight of the person passing on the street. "Oh, I'm that sorry, ye'll forgive me, please, for saying such?"

"Well, it's like measuring out any braid or whatever, really, isn't it?" Hattie said practically, taking the thread and doing her best to copy what Effie had done. "Like this?"

Effie nodded. "And half goes on each bobbin. Will ye tell me of your home?"

Hattie laughed. "What do you want to know? Home was a nice but smallish house in Hertfordshire, on the edge of a small town. It was... very different to here. A lot sleepier, more old-fashioned, if that makes any sense?"

"I was meaning the home ye're making," she explained, blushing slightly, and holding the end of the thread to the neck of the bobbin with her thumb until the winding secured it. "Though Hertfordshire sounds bonny. Glasgow was always so noisy, so busy."

"Oh!" Hattie was getting better at not blushing, but she couldn't help feeling a bit silly at her mistake. "I thought - because you mentioned about here being different to home..." She took a breath and smiled. "Our home is... it's wonderful. I mean, it's not big either, but it's ours and it's - well, actually, it is very different from home! All the houses here are, aren't they? And with the weather so much warmer, too... It's a lot more modern, more sparsely furnished, and no need for such dreadful thick drapes across the windows. It all feels so much lighter!"

"And cleaner!" Effie agreed. "Though I'm thinking if ye came from a small town 'twas not so dirty frae the factories as the city? I cannae be used to the weather, for sure, January should be snow and snuggling close for heat."

"Oh goodness yes! It feels so strange to be so warm at this time of year, doesn't it?"

"It makes me sleepy," Effie confessed. "I must no' be wasting daylight when I could be working, but Jonathan came home the other day and I was sleeping in my chair. I didna even mean for to nap."

"Oh, but I'm sure it doesn't matter!" Hattie cried, reaching out to lay a hand on Effie's arm and getting all tangled up in the thread she was still holding instead. "Oh dear, I'm sorry! I don't think I'm being much help here!"

Effie laughed, laid the bobbin down on her pillow, and gently untangled Hattie from the thread. "I'm still working, and I can only work in daylight. Lamps dinna have enough light, and I get...well, anyway, I can only work in the day, and Mrs. Harris is waiting on her fan."

"Thank you!" Hattie said gratefully, and stopped trying to help with the thread. "Anyway, I'm sure no-one would mind you taking the odd nap. And it's not as if you have to support yourself by yourself any more, after all." She tilted her head thoughtfully. "I wonder if one of the inventor-types around here might be able to come up with a better sort of light, that might let you work in the evenings. I know I should like better light for my projects too!"

"I hae a lamp?" she offered. "Tis enough to work in the dusk, there's a bowl of water increases the light? I met..." She paused, and wrinkled her brows. "Mr. McAllister, I think it was? He was an inventor, and Mr. Simoneaux works with glass, I'm thinking that they could come up with something?"

"Oh, she's been here a few months, but she's quite shy, so you might not have met her - she's a Beloved at the hotel. ACtually, I haven't seen her for a while." Hattie grinned. "You know, I ought to have a tea party or something for all my Beloved friends!"

"Oh, ye should!" Effie agreed enthusiastically. "I dinna see so many folks since I wed, and we wouldnae be needing chaperons, would we? Since ye and I and Mr. Simoneaux and...oh, I canna recall the gentleman's name. The tailor? And Mr. Warren is wed now, too, I'm hearing."

"I don't think I've met Mr Warren," Hattie realised. "And I know who the tailor is but I've never really talked to him. I..." She grinned. "I suppose I've been a little preoccupied with someone else lately!"

"Mr. Warren is new to town," she told Hattie. "No' so new he's not wed, already, and to the doctor."

She smiled, recalling that she really did need to make time to see the doctor, but when she felt so well, she didn't feel the need for it. "I'm thinking the preoccupation's a fair common one."

"Well, I think I should have them all round so I can meet them properly!" Hattie said enthusiastically, already starting to think about which cakes to bake and how many seats she'd need and whether she had enough crockery, and when would be the best time for such a party...

"Perhaps a Saturday afternoon, do you think? So many of the Beloveds are at work during the week, even if I'm not."

[info]lacemaker

She nodded. "Oh, aye, a Saturday sounds grand. And with most folk not working, they should be free. Would ye be thinking of inviting the Ascendants of those who've wed?"

[info]ex_homemaker813

"Oh no - that would have to be a full-blown dinner party! No, I was thinking Beloveds-only. So we can sit and gossip and catch up on the news and not have to guard our tongues," she said wickedly.

Effie laughed. "Oh, I dinna guard my tongue with Jonathan, and ye just heard how much I was guarding my tongue this morning, though I'm thinking I'd be more careful around others, aye. Could be the end of the month would be enough notice?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Yes, I think so. I'll send out invitations! And I was only joking, really, about guarding our tongues. I just meant, it's a different sort of atmosphere when it's just Beloveds than when there are Ascendants there too."

"Oh, aye, that it is." Effie nodded. "Can I be helping with the invitations? Or plans?"

"Oh, goodness, no! The invitations won't be a lot of work, and planning what to feed people is something I enjoy too much to want to share!" She grinned. "Though you could perhaps help me make a list of people to invite."
