Effie was taking advantage of the warm weather, and sitting out on the porch of the house with her pillow on her lap. Her feet were tucked up on a stool, as she still had lingering nerves about whatever those metal skittering things had been returning, and she was certain those had been responsible for the damage to her threads. Such a little thing, in appearance, but so much to her. The box of threads was at her side, another box of bobbins next to it, and she was trying to wind pairs to start the next pattern.

Trying. The thread came to an abrupt end again, and she swore fervently, very Glaswegian and thoroughly unladylike, before glancing up and blushing hard, eyes widening as she caught sight of the person passing on the street. "Oh, I'm that sorry, ye'll forgive me, please, for saying such?"

Hattie grinned. "Yes, we really do need a different form of titles for same-gender marriages, don't we? The practice is going very well - Delphina's very busy!" She sobered. "There do seem to have been an unfortunate number of accidents to animals lately."

"Aye?" Effie looked up at Hattie, eyes sharpening. "Is it so? What manner of accidents would that be?"

"I don't really know. She doesn't really talk about her work very much - and I know next to nothing about animals so I don't ask. But I know she's been called out a lot recently." Hattie looked worried. "Oh dear, do you think it could be related to whatever got into your threads and Sadie's silk?"

"It doesna' seem likely," she said, with a slight frown. "Most critters that eat my threads are so wee, little buggy things, no' big enough to do harm to animals."

"Yes, I agree it doesn't seem likely," Hattie nodded, still puzzled. "Perhaps it is just the misfortunes of animals getting used to a new town. I shall have to ask Delphina if there might be anything odd connecting her patients."

"Ye'll let me know if it seems more likely?" Effie asked, still not seeing any possible link.

"Of course I will! We all need to pull together to find out what's going on - if there is something going on. The animals may just be a coincidence."

She nodded uncertainly. "Tis an unco' strange place, some days."
